     Myning Company

  Dear madam, dear sir,

we are glad to tell you that there is an opening in our company.

Due to the overwhelming number of myned planets found in the recently
reassigned sector CY-27-beta we are looking for some skilled person to
fulfill a demanding and challenging task.

As you may not be aware of what a "myne" is, let me introduce you:
Back in Space War IV (2369.23.24-2370.12.32) the Mad Meanies conquered
most of the planets in sectors B, C and E. After having exploited the
ores, they booby-trapped the planets with "mynes" - (Mines, Yet Not
  Equally Smart).
Recently, after the end of Space War LV, the allied forces have decided
to revive the area and continue the exploitation of rare ores.
Yet, this seems impossible unless all planets have been searched and
the mynes' positions precisely been marked in maps.

Ever since its foundation the Forlorn Hope Myning Company has been the #1
partner for explosive problems. We at FHMC say: "Blasting mynes is our
  business".

And, we want YOU to help us. As mentioned, your task will be to clear
some of the planets in sector CY-27-beta.
We are glad to tell you that our company's latest achievement, the
  "Complete-Planet-As-A-Cyclic-Mynefield-Viewer" ("CPAACMV" for short),
  will support your endeavors.

On the CPAACMV's screen the whole planet will be displayed.
Note that the display is cyclic, i.e. the tiles on the left rim are next to
those on the right rim and the same holds for the upper and lower rim.

Now, before you get your hands on work, let me first explain how to find
  and mark mynes:

  Myning
  ------
At the beginning the teleporter will take you to a SAFE starting tile on
the planet. You should then press the left button on your pointing device
to remove the tile and see what's beneath it (it will NOT be a myne).

Having removed a tile the CPAACMV will be able to compute how many mynes
there are in direct neighborhood of this tile. As every tile has exacly 8
neighbors, there may be 0 to 8 mynes around any tile.

If there is no myne around the tile, the CPAACMV will show a blank field.
This will indicate you, that there is no need to worry.
Moreover the "Automatic-Safe-Tile-Uncover-Facility" (ASTUF) will then
reveal the 4 tiles in the north, south, east, and west of this tile.

If there ARE mynes around a tile, the CPAACMV will show the number of
mynes surrounding the tile (a number from 1 to 8).

Tactics: At first you will eventually have to make some GOOD guesses in
order not to step on a myne, but as more and more of the planet is visited,
all you will need is a clear mind and a precise hand.

To complete a planet, you will have to remove ALL tiles with no mynes
underneath. The tiles that hide mynes must NOT be removed, instead you will
have to MARK them. Press the right button on your pointing device to do so.
Marked tiles will be shown bearing an "F" in your CPAACMV. To retract a
misplaced marker simply press the left button.

  The payment
  -----------
As this may be of special interest to you, let me say a word about your
payment: For each revealed tile you will be awarded some credits
depending on how many mynes there are around the tile.
For each retracted marker we will have to charge you 2 credits.
If you complete a mynefield in time, the excess time will significantly
increase your score. If you DON'T make it in time, your score will be poor.
Certainly I do not have to tell you what will happen if you accidentally
step on a myne ... the planet blows up causing your score to be decreased
  accordingly.

Note: Due to its enormous possibilities the CPAACMV has a noticeable per-
second-power-consumption. As YOU will have to pay for the fuel the CPAACMV
consumes, we recommend that you do your job as FAST as possible.
In the CPAACMV's setup you may choose how fast you are willing to do your
job. (You may select a speed from "SLOW" to "RIDICULOUS" (the fastest)).
The CPAACMV will then automatically compute the amount of fuel needed and
and thus (by reducing its fuel-load accordingly) reduce its power
consumption a little (up to about 10 %).
This little reduction may help you make your way into the "Hall Of Fame".

  Hall Of Fame
  ------------
Milestones of the myning business are conserved in our "Hall Of Fame".
In each of the eight planet classes that you will have to deal with
(PX-01 to PX-08), there can be only ONE "all-time greatest myner".
His name, his score and the date of his unforgetable performance are
permanently stored in the FHMC-Hall Of Fame.

  Other CPAACMV features
  ----------------------
+ In the CPAACMV's setup, you may select which planet class (denoting the
planet's size) to visit next (1 to 8). The CPAACMV will find a suitable
    planet for you.
+ The CPAACMV may be switched from "MP-Look" to "PL-Look" ("PL-Look" was
named after Pascal Lefvre, a profound and knowledgeable myner).
+ The CPAACMV supplies a DEMO-mode. In DEMO-mode the CPAACMV will try to
clear the planet on its own.
Note that scores achieved using the CPAACMV's DEMO-mode will not enter
    the "Hall Of Fame".
+ The myning-sound may be turned on/off. Actually the CPAACMV will not
produce sounds anyway; at least unless you step on a myne.

  Registration
  ------------
But now, back to business. If you get to love your new job after a 10-days
trial period, you should consider becoming a "registered myner".

Note, that, after the trial period, only registered myners are entitled to
keep myning, enhance their myning-skills and make their way into the
everlasting Hall Of Fame. Furthermore registered mynes are allowed to use
ideas and parts of our MYNES!-source code in their own programs.

To register your own myning business and become a "registered & authorized
FHMC-myner", please send us US$ 5 (THANK YOU!).

  Enjoy MYNES!.
