JG3 AT STALINGRAD

By January 1943, the situation at
Stalingrad was desperate. At the
Pitomnik airfield (within the encircled
area) six volunteer Bf109s from JG 3 had
been acting as the base defense force
since December. This small force had
racked up 130 victories, often with only
one or two planes serviceable. The
leading scorer of the group was Sergeant
Kurt Ebener, with most of his victories
against IL-2s, MiG-3s and LaGG fighters.
On 16 January 1943, the airfield was
overrun by the Russians, and the planes
barely escaped in time, but five of the
six were lost when they attempted to land
in another airfield in the pocket, this
one at Gumrak. The field was snow
covered and pocked with bomb craters,
which caused the planes to flip. Only
Oberleutnant Lukas was able to turn away
in time and divert to a field out of the
pocket.

MISSION

The Soviets are about to overrun your
airfield with infantry, and have air
support as well. Get airborne quickly
and provide what support you can but save
your plane at all costs. You are not to
"return to base" but rather to land at
the first way point.

NOTES

This is a snow mission
