PIN-POINT RECONNAISSANCE

By the summer of 1944, it became
virtually impossible to fly the FW189 on
reconnaissance missions even when
escorted by fighters. During major
offensives, the Soviet air cover was so
thick that a new tactic was devised to
gain intelligence. A recon plane would
approach the target area from high
altitude and from the direction of the
Soviet rear. Flying at top speed, it
would dive down through the fighter cover
and then return to German lines at
literally ground level.
