Bombing Mission

On the night of 20-21 June, 1943,
No.5 and No.8 Groups attacked the
the Zeppelin works at Friedrichshafen,
where components of radar sets were
being manufactured. The attack was a
"shuttle mission," in that the bom-
bers flew to the target, but proceeded
onward to North Africa rather than
returning home to England. As a result,
the Luftwaffe ground controllers vec-
tored no fighters to the incoming
bomber stream - they believed that
they could get them on the way home.
No British bombers were downed, and
the Zeppelin plant sustained consider-
able damage.
ORDERS: Fly to Friedrichshafen and bomb
the factory there. keep your eye peeled
for 1-2 enemy fighters. Return to your
base in England (sorry- no North Africa!<g>)
