AMMUNITION CONSERVATION

On what was later to be the highest
scoring day of his life (17 victories),
Hans-Joachim Marseille started off his
first sortie at 07:30 on a beautiful,
blue-skied day as an escort for Stukas.
Approaching the target, south of El
Imayid at 10,500 feet, 10 P-40s closed in
to attack but Marseille downed three of
them in short order. On the way back,
six Spitfires came on him from 6 o'clock
high, but he broke sharp to the left at
the right instant, and worked around
behind the Spitfire and downed it, too.
Upon return, the unit armorers noted that
for his four victories, Marseille had
expended only twenty rounds of cannon and
60 rounds of machinegun ammunition!

MISSION

Defend the Stukas from the P-40s and
the Spitfires. The mission is a failure
if more than two Stukas are lost.

NOTES

This is a day mission.
