RETREAT TO ALAMEIN

The Hurricane MkIID's debut in the
Western Desert came on the 6th of June,
1942. By the 16th of June, the No. 6
Squadron RAF had made 37 sorties,
destroying or damaging 59 tanks and
vehicles. The IID had two .303 Brownings
in the upper cowling, which fired a
mixture of armour-piercing, incendiary,
tracer and high-explosive bullets. The
key firepower came from the Vickers-S
40mm cannon (15 rpg) which fired a 2 and
1/4 pound armor-piercing projectile.
During the retreat to El Alamein, the
squadron was only able to keep one flight
of IIDs flying, as losses equalled
replacement planes.

MISSION
