MARSEILLE'S LAST KILL

Having just earned the Diamonds to his
Knight's Cross on the 3rd of September
1942, Hans Joachim Marseille encountered
a Spitfire on the 26th flown by a British
ace, supposedly with 35 kills. After a
dogfight that lasted 15 minutes,
Hauptmann Marseille finally defeated him,
earning his 158th and final kill. Just
four days later, his Bf109 developed
engine trouble and smoke filled his
cockpit. He bailed out but hit the tail
of the plane, knocking him out, and he
never pulled his ripcord. Thus was the
light of the "Star of Africa"
extinguished.
