O AUCTOR

Este trabalho, nascido em _cavaco_[1] d'alguns amigos, foi
fruto d'uma noute: sahiu-nos da penna para o prelo; por isso sirva-nos

e juntamente a boa vontade do auctor.

A ti, meu caro Motta, agradeo-te do corao o favor, com que annuiste
 illustrao do--Poemeto--accedendo ao meu pedido, assim como ao dos
outros amigos, que o mesmo te rogaram.

INVOCAO

    Musa, eu quero ir gigantesco enleio
    Dos litt'ratos, que chamam de _mo cheia_;
    Eu quero o meu candil levar em punho
     festa, que de si uma _epopeia_.

    Por isso,  Musa,  nume encantador!
     sombra indefinivel de mulher!
    No me deixes a mente aqui dormir,
    Leva-me  festa, quero l _viver_.

    Vem, tu, que a tantos gloria has dado e nome,
    De papoulas a minha fronte ornar.
    Vem tirar-me das varzeas do Mondego,
    E d-me inspirao, quero cantar.

    L n'esse patrio lar de _rouxinoes_
    Quero meus carmes no _arrabil_ tanger.
    Leva-me, musa, leva-me um cantor
    Que eu sinto o genio minha mente encher.

    E ha de, qual _balo_ em dia tenebroso,
    Subir at sumir-se pelos ceus;
    Encher a eternidade, o espao, tudo,
    E offuscar esses litt'ratos--_pygmeus_.

     um cego que o caminho lhes _aponta_!
    E os leva pela mo p'r'o seu altar!
    Cordeiros _innocentes_, d'outras eras,
    Que vo de _sancto_ a capa alli buscar.

    Satellites d'um sol, sem vida e s!
    Qu'esparge apenas moribunda luz,
    Como ho de atravessar constellaes
    To ricas de fulgor, que mui seduz?!

    No podem como as aves agoureiras,
    Cantar l d'alta torre em noute escura,
    E dar a quem pertence o gonzo immenso,
    Que o futuro nos d de luz to pura?!

    Que importa o caminhar da vaga ardente?
    No vae ella nas praias repousar?
    Que importa, pois, tambem a luz d'um foco,
    Se vae n'outro mais forte a luz findar?

     vaga aspirao de gente tosca
    Querer lyrios colher n'um matagal!
    E desfolhar as rosas to mimosas!
    Pr'a dar-nos um carvo, _puro crystal_!!..

    .....................................

    Acaso achareis vs to bello gosto
    Aos frutos _succolentos_ d'um pinheiro,
    Que no vejaes, por trs d'escura rama,
    Caminhar a _rapoza_ ao galinheiro?

    No creio n'essas cousas n'este sec'lo,
    Em que tudo caminha ao _natural_,
    Embora esses criticos asseverem
    Ser _entrudo_ constante em Portugal.

    As mascaras de cra duram pouco,
    Das outras mui fraco o seu carto:
    Ho de os _bailes_ portanto ser famosos
    N'outras eras d'_amor_ e _inspirao_.

    Vamos, musa, porm, a outros destinos,
    Mais franca seja, pois, nossa misso;
    Submos pela escada do bom senso,
    Que importa a gargalhada d'um villo[2].

    Agora, minha musa,  festa vamos
    Dos litt'ratos, que chamam de _mo cheia_;
    Eu quero o meu candil levar em punho
     festa, que de si uma epopeia.

A MUSA--SALOIA

    Adeus, minha musa qu'rida,
    Vens hoje to festival;
    Trazes as faces to lindas
    Como a rosa no rosal.
    Onde vaes to elegante,
    Mimosa como o zagal?--
    --_Venho dar-te este meu brao,_
    _Quero ter uma rival._--

    Se tu s to donairosa
    Nas tuas vestes singelas,
    Como podem captivar-me,
    Captivar-me as mais donzellas,
    Se eu no gosto d'atavios,
    Nem bellezas, que tem ellas?
    --_Pde ser; mas l no ceu_
    _Ha inda tantas estrellas._--

    Eu no quero, minha musa,
    'Star sujeito  lei fatal,
    Pois  crime _to horrendo_!
    O pensar bem no _ideal_:
    E depois _mestre_ Castilho
    Se nos manda p'r'o _hospital_?!
    --_ desgraa na verdade!_
    _Pelletan no lhe quer mal._--

    Oh! como vens conceituosa
    D'essas phrases no vestir!
    Juntas mais  galhardia,
    Tanta prenda, esse sorrir...
    Quero, pois, amar-te; e muito
     fora do meu sentir.
    --_Mas eu sou to singelinha,_
    _Tenho no campo o existir!_--

    Mais viveza em ti encontro,
    Mais pureza em teu amar;
    O crepusc'lo da cidade
     vaidoso em seu cerrar;
    E os prazer's, que l s'encontram,
    Vo como a brisa do mar.
    --_Quer ento amar-me muito,_
    _Quer levar-me ao seu altar?_--

    Porque no, mulher festiva?
    Has de dar-me o teu abrao,
    E inspirar-me n'essas tardes
    Em que o sol j mui bao,
    E se perde no horizonte
    Como a nuvem n'esse espao.
    --_Porque no, meu anjo lindo?_
    _Vamos ambos pelo brao._--

    Tu has de ir comigo festa,
    Como a mariposa  flor,
    Has de l n'essa _folgana_
    Fazer de mim trovador.
    Tu no sabes quanto  bello
    Ser inspirado d'amor?!
    --_Vamos primeiro ao mercado,_
    _E depois sers cantor._--

    Vamos primeiro ao mercado?
    Vamos l, minha cecem.
    Tu que levas no cestinho?
    Levas _ovos_ ao vintem?
    Ou ento so alguns _patos_.
    Que vaes ver se quer alguem?
    --_No senhor;  outra cousa,_
    _Muito melhor, muito alm._--

    Diz-me c: ento so _uvas_,
    Ou de _Baccho_ o seu primor?
    Eu no divulgo o segredo
    Em paga de tanto amor.
    Diz-me ento se so gallinhas,
    Se so _rosas_ sem olor?
    --_No senhor; so outras cousas:_
    _So livros de trovador._--

    So abortos d'estes tempos,
    Que vaes  praa vender?
    Cuidas tu ser isso lindo?
    Ser officio de mulher?
    Pois, musa to feiticeira
    No deve d'isso fazer.
    --_N'esse caso ahi vo p'ra lama,_
    _Ahi vo p'ra quem quizer._--

    Tens agora mais feitios
    Ao nascer d'esse desdem:
    Olha, pois, para os _taes livros_
    Como no quel-os ninguem:
    E tu, musa, to contente
    Com valor nem d'um vintem.
    --_Ora, adeus; deixamos isso;_
    _Caminhmos mais p'ra alm._--

    .......................
    .......................
    .......................

    Minha musa, 'stamos juntos
    Da _cigarra_ e da _folgana_:
     aqui onde os _litteratos_
    Tem _firmada_ a sua esp'rana:
    E tu, musa, d-me cantos,
    D-me o escudo, d-me a lana...
    --_Ora, pois, espera um pouco_,
    Vamos ver a contradana.

O PARTO

    Estendeu seu manto a noite;
           O sol escondeu o brilhar;
    As trevas so o que reinam;
           A luz perdeu-se pelo ar;

    As estrellas que o ceu tinha
           Perderam todo o fulgor;
    Os echos emmudeceram;
           A terra no diz amor;

    A corrente perdeu o brilho,
           Voltou  fonte natal;
    As flores seccaram todas,
           Seccaram todas no val';

    O sol escondeu a fronte,
           A lua seguiu-o tambem;
    Os astros se sepultaram
           Nas trevas que o mundo tem;

    As aves j no tem canto,
           Tem medo da solido;
    A terra j no responde,
           No falla  voz do trovo:

     tudo negrura immensa,
           Ou cataclysmo infernal;
    Oh!  ave que, perpassando,
           Nos trouxe o genio do mal...

    ...............................

    Mas, emfim, l vem cahindo
           Um espectro n'amplido;
    Oh! que formas nunca vistas
           Que elle traz! que negrido!

    Tudo treme! n'esse instante
           Parece o mundo acabar;
    Ou j o ceu que pouco a pouco
           Quer sobre ns repousar.

    Oh! que gritos! que soluos
           Solta o filho junto  me!
    Ao ver perto o grande abysmo,
           Que vem buscal-o tambem.

    O _pisco_ levanta as pernas
           Para sustental-o no ar;
    As aves vo timoratas
           Com _elle_ se nivelar.

    Outros fogem para a fralda
           Do monte que sobe ao ceu;
    Outros, emfim, tomam _armas_...
           _Arcabuzes_... que sei eu?

    Tudo busca um doce abrigo...
           Querendo matal-o no ar;
    Mas o espectro vem descendo
           E mui suave em seu andar.

    E quando todos attentos
           Fitavam triste a viso,
    Uma rajada de vento
           Arremessou-a pr'o cho.

    Nas alturas de Lisboa
           Parou ella, azas abriu:
    Desprendeu mil _gafanhotos_!
           Cousa assim nunca se viu!

    Tinham frmas mais que humanas
           Pois algumas nunca as vi!
    Uns cavallos com taes azas!
           Voando tanto por si...!!!

    E depois, como voavam!
           P'ra terra tanto a descer!
    Estas cousas, to confusas!
           Nunca as pude comprehender.

    E tambem j na cidade
           Desgracas aconteciam,
    Que gritos da turba tremula!
           Que soluos l se ouviam!

    Os _pinheiros_, cuja fronte
           Tinha ainda algum verdor,
    Largaram da terra as pernas,
           Galopavam com fervor.

    Mas que pobres! na viagem
           _Maceraram_ face _linda_!
    Mas qu'importa se chegaram
           Com elles  festa infinda?

    Chegaram junto da _olaia_,
           Onde a _cigarra cantava_;
    Pasmaram todos viventes;
           Era o saro _comeava_.

    E a minha musa atrevida
           Fugiu de junto de mim...
    .............................
    Pois hei de lhe dar _pateada_
           Se a ouvir fallar por fim.

O SARO

    Era um dia de festa.
                        Pelos ares
    J nada havia d'esse drama, que
    Causra tanto horror: era mui linda,
    A cr nova que nascia no horizonte,
    Como a aurora, que aps a tempestade
    Vem, mimosa actriz, l por sobre as serras
    Dar vida ao mundo todo que a anhelava.

    O espectac'lo que os ar's tinham contido,
    Passou de negrido  luz do dia;
    E as aves que, nas pernas do tal _pisco_,
    Buscaram a guarida  eternidade,
    J nas franas das arvores s'erguiam,
    Soltando seus cantar's, todos festivos.
    J mui perto d'_olaia gigantesca_,
    Onde a _cigarra_ desprende sua _chiada_,
    _Ensinando moral, philosophia,_
    Estava _um certo vulto_, mui sombrio!
    (E d'alampada na mo como Diogenes!)
    Soltando algumas phrases pouco ouvidas.
    Mesmo assim, como apito em larga praa
    Ou de folles qual gaita d'_espavento_,
    Ou mesmo o som alegre d'um pandeiro,
    Juntou em volta a si com mil gaifonas
    Um sem num'ro de ser's, _todos galantes_:

    Chegaram _patos_. _Gallos_ e _gallinhas_
    Subiram a um poleiro que ali 'stava,
    E j d'altiva fronte, qual _cegonha_
    Ensinaram o _seu mestre, l piaram_.

    Mas no termina aqui o ajuntamento,
    Porque l fra, longe, n'um _roado_,
    Vem mettido, qual _cesto d'azeitonas_
    Na trouxa d'um gallego _mui sebento_!
    Patusco, que se diz ser um _litt'rato_.

    Parou, por fim,  porta sem convite;
    Mas o _mestre_, que a _tudo_ dera entrada,
    Levantou-se do banco de cortia
    E _foi levar a mo_ ao seu conviva.
    Depoz ali gallego o longo _fardo_,
    E foi s gargalhadas no caminho
    'Sperar um passageiro  _barca_ sua.

    Soou por fim a hora.
                       Disse o _mestre_:
    Est aberta a sesso.
                       --Peo a palavra.--
    Disse um.
          --Quero fallar--
                            Disse outro alm.
    --Os meus versos no ficam no _tinteiro_--
    D'alm mais outra voz soou tremente.

    Na _balburdia_ immensa, que nasceu
    Dos litt'ratos, que qu'riam fallar juntos,
    Tocou _mestre_ d'enfado a campainha.

    Cada um fallou, por fim, por ordem sua,
    Abraos recebendo ao _mestre ingente_,
    Como em honra e louvor da _nova fama_
    Que de _vs_ ha de encher vossa Lisboa.

    De _Magalona_ contam cousas raras,
    De Filinto, sei eu, nada disseram;
    Mas de _Carlos_, o _magno_, o _grandioso_,
    Como de moura e fadas contos _bellos_,
    Foi, emfim, o que l _muito cantaram_.

    Era a hora em que o saro j se finava,
    E os pegasos olharam para o ceu;
    Mas em paga _d'amor e de saudade_
    A todos quer dar--_mestre_--uma lembrana,
    Pintando-lhes nas costas, n'um abrao.
    _As armas... que j muitos captivaram._

                                                             Caro amigo

A minha _cigarra_
do _futuro_!..

J disse que no _Poemeto_ s tenho uma pequena parte material; e no
quero mais. No me ferem aquellas balas de papel, por que no tenho
aspiraes litterarias (?), e, que as tivera bem fundadas, no me
occuparia em _tosquear camlos_!.. No!.. porque, a responder s suas
_judiciosas arguies_, pedir-lhe-hia emprestada ou a linguagem de
_regateira_, ou do _ridiculo_, unica digna de seus espirituosos
_epithetos_.

........................................................................

Desculpa, amigo, estas involuntarias digresses. Vou dar conta do meu
trabalho.

o _pagode_ em meio, fez-me desistir. Fique s a inteno!.. Os que
_pede_ (_ac pectore_) _calcante_ contemplam os astros so faceis de
reconhecer.

Na quarta, a que serve de thema o verso:

    Abraos recebendo ao _mestre ingente_,

talvez se note a falta da musa; eu tambem a no achei. Provavelmente a

                                                                 Teu...

                                                           _J. S. Motta._

Gutenberg-tm work. The Foundation makes no representations concerning
the copyright status of any work in any country outside the United
States.

1.E. Unless you have removed all references to Project Gutenberg:

1.E.1. The following sentence, with active links to, or other immediate
access to, the full Project Gutenberg-tm License must appear prominently
whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg-tm work (any work on which the
phrase "Project Gutenberg" appears, or with which the phrase "Project
Gutenberg" is associated) is accessed, displayed, performed, viewed,
copied or distributed:

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or
re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.net

1.E.2. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is derived
from the public domain (does not contain a notice indicating that it is
posted with permission of the copyright holder), the work can be copied
and distributed to anyone in the United States without paying any fees
or charges. If you are redistributing or providing access to a work
with the phrase "Project Gutenberg" associated with or appearing on the
work, you must comply either with the requirements of paragraphs 1.E.1
through 1.E.7 or obtain permission for the use of the work and the
Project Gutenberg-tm trademark as set forth in paragraphs 1.E.8 or
1.E.9.

1.E.3. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is posted
with the permission of the copyright holder, your use and distribution
must comply with both paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 and any additional
terms imposed by the copyright holder. Additional terms will be linked
to the Project Gutenberg-tm License for all works posted with the
permission of the copyright holder found at the beginning of this work.

1.E.4. Do not unlink or detach or remove the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License terms from this work, or any files containing a part of this
work or any other work associated with Project Gutenberg-tm.

1.E.5. Do not copy, display, perform, distribute or redistribute this
electronic work, or any part of this electronic work, without
prominently displaying the sentence set forth in paragraph 1.E.1 with
active links or immediate access to the full terms of the Project
Gutenberg-tm License.

1.E.6. You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including any
word processing or hypertext form. However, if you provide access to or
distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg-tm work in a format other than
"Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other format used in the official version
posted on the official Project Gutenberg-tm web site (www.gutenberg.net),
you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense to the user, provide a
copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means of obtaining a copy upon
request, of the work in its original "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other
form. Any alternate format must include the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.

1.E.7. Do not charge a fee for access to, viewing, displaying,
performing, copying or distributing any Project Gutenberg-tm works
unless you comply with paragraph 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.

1.E.8. You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
access to or distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works provided
that

- You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
     the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
     you already use to calculate your applicable taxes. The fee is
     owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
     has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
     Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
     must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
     prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
     returns. Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
     sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
     address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
     the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."

- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
     you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
     does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
     License. You must require such a user to return or
     destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
     and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
     Project Gutenberg-tm works.

- You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any
     money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
     electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days
     of receipt of the work.

- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
     distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

1.E.9. If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark. Contact the
Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH F3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
and the Foundation web page at http://www.pglaf.org.

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit http://pglaf.org

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including including checks, online payments and credit card
donations. To donate, please visit: http://pglaf.org/donate

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works.

Professor Michael S. Hart is the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.
