1.0 Introduction
=================

In the event of any of the AMBRA Software files being removed from the
hard disk, or becoming corrupt, the AMBRA Install program can be used to
restore any part or all of the software.

You can use the AMBRA Install program to restore any of the following
software:

AMBRA Read Me NOW!!! file in C:\AMBRA
        AMBRA Tutorial in C:\AMBRA\TUTORIAL
        AMBRA Online Reference in C:\WINDOWS
        AMBRA Wallpaper bitmaps. in C:\WINDOWS

2.0 Installation Requirements
==============================

Before running the install program DOS and Windows must be properly
installed on your system. The installation program requires
Microsoft Windows to run.

Since the install program can be used to restore software, files will only
be copied to their respective directories, as detailed above. The directories
will be created on Drive C:.

You should ensure that enough free disk space exists on your hard disk.
Install requires at least 400 Kilobytes (400KB) to store its work files.
In addition, the maximum space required for a full installation is:

    AMBRA Software 1.9 Megabytes (1.9MB)

If Multimedia software was supplied with your system then the requirement
for space is:

    AMBRA Software 1.9 Megabytes (1.9MB)
    Multimedia Software 5.5 Megabytes (5.5MB)
    ----------------------------------------------
                  Total 7.4 Megabytes (7.4MB)
    ----------------------------------------------

Install's work files are removed from the hard disk after installation.

To check the amount of free space available you can use the CHKDSK
program supplied with DOS.

At the DOS prompt, type:

             CHKDSK C:

and press the ENTER key.

Only use the installation program to copy the files to your hard disk.
The files have been compressed and will not work without first
being decompressed. If you received Multimedia software with your system
please refer to the section 'Multimedia Software' for further details.

2.1 Running the installation program from DOS:
-----------------------------------------------

1. Put the AMBRA Software Recovery Installation (Disk 1) disk into
   the floppy drive.

2. At the DOS-prompt type:

        WIN A:SETUP

If you have put the disk into drive B:, then replace A: with B:

3. Press the ENTER key.

Windows will start up and then run the installation setup program from
the specified drive. The setup program will copy some work files to the
hard disk.

2.2 Running the installation program from Windows:
---------------------------------------------------

1. Put the AMBRA Software Recovery Installation (Disk 1) disk into
   the floppy drive.

2. From the File option of the Program Manager menu, select Run...

3. Type:
            A:\SETUP

If you have put the disk into drive B:, then replace A: with B:

4. Press the ENTER key.

The installation setup program will run and copy some work files to the
hard disk.

3.0 Installation
=================

After a brief introduction Install will present you with a list of
software which can be installed.

Click on the checkbox next to the item(s) you wish to Install. Some
items require you to enter further information, for example, you can
choose a particular AMBRA bitmap, and have it installed as your default
wallpaper.

Once you have selected the items to be installed, click on the 'Install'
pushbutton.

If you do not want to install any items click on the 'Exit Install'
pushbutton.

4.0 What if the recovery does not work ?
=========================================

After the installation process is complete you should restart your computer
system. Observe the start up, pay particular attention to any warning
or error messages informing you of system conflicts or hardware not being
installed or recognized.

You can return to your configuration, prior to the installation if any
error messages appear, by recovering your system files.

Your system files will have backup copies if they were updated as part of
the installation process. The original file is named as follows:

        CONFIG.SYS saved as CONFIG.AMM in C:\
        AUTOEXEC.BAT saved as AUTOEXEC.AMM in C:\
        WIN.INI saved as WIN.AMM in C:\WINDOWS
        SYSTEM.INI saved as SYSTEM.AMM in C:\WINDOWS

To return to the previous version of your system file:

1. Delete the current version of the system file.
2. Rename the previous version of the system file to the name of the
    deleted file.

The following examples demonstrate how to do this.

Example 1:
----------
To recover your previous version of CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT (these
files are stored in the root directory of your hard disk).

    1. Before proceeding, confirm that files with the extension .AMM
exist by looking at a directory list:

Type CD \ and press the ENTER key.
Type DIR *.AMM and press the ENTER key.

If no files with the extension .AMM are displayed DO NOT PROCEED with
the rest of this process because your system files have not been
    changed.

To return to your previous version of CONFIG.SYS:

    3. Type DEL \CONFIG.SYS and press the ENTER key.
    4. Type REN \CONFIG.AMM CONFIG.SYS and press the ENTER key.

To return to your previous version of AUTOEXEC.BAT:

    5. Type DEL \AUTOEXEC.BAT and press the ENTER key.
    6. Type REN \AUTOEXEC.AMM AUTOEXEC.BAT and press the ENTER key.

After renaming any of these files restart your computer.

Example 2:
----------
WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI are configuration files used by Windows.

Start Windows and observe the start up. If Windows reports any errors
then return to the DOS prompt (you may need to restart your computer).

To recover your previous version of WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI (these
files are assumed to be in the \WINDOWS directory of your hard disk.
If Windows has been re-installed into a different directory, use that
    directory name instead of \WINDOWS).

    1. Before proceeding, confirm that files with the extension .AMM
exist by looking at a directory list:

Type CD \WINDOWS and press the ENTER key.
Type DIR *.AMM and press the ENTER key.

If no files with the extension .AMM are displayed DO NOT PROCEED with
the rest of this process because your system files have not been
    changed.

To return to your previous version of WIN.INI:

    3. Type DEL WIN.INI and press the ENTER key.
    4. Type REN WIN.AMM WIN.INI and press the ENTER key.

To return to your previous version of SYSTEM.INI:

    5. Type DEL SYSTEM.INI and press the ENTER key.
    6. Type REN SYSTEM.AMM SYSTEM.INI and press the ENTER key.

After renaming any of these files you should start Windows.

The installation process can be run again to restore any of the
    AMBRA Software.

5.0 Multimedia Software
========================

           -----------------------------------------------------
If your computer system includes Multimedia software.
           -----------------------------------------------------

Multimedia software disks are included as part of the software
recovery process.

Multimedia Installation Disk 2
-------------------------------

This disk contains the software to control your sound card and CD-ROM.
This software MUST be installed first to provide access to the sound
and CD-ROM facilities.

The installation process will install this software and add a program
group to the Windows desktop, titled AMBRA Multimedia. Files will be stored
in the \SPECTRUM directory and the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
Install will update the file SYSTEM.INI. The original version of this file
will be named SYSTEM.AMM.

The installation process defaults to the configuration of the sound
card and CD-ROM as originally shipped. If you have changed this
configuration you MUST set the parameters using the facility provided
by Install. An incorrectly configured sound card can have unpredictable
results which can give rise to hardware conflicts which will affect the
performance of your system. Further details about your sound card and
CD-ROM configuration can be found in the "Multimedia Sound Card User's
Guide".

After installation restart your computer to configure the sound card
and CD-ROM.

Multimedia Installation Disk 3
-------------------------------

This disk contains third party software and as such is provided with its
own installation program which runs under Windows.

To install this software from DOS:
----------------------------------

    1. Put the disk into the floppy drive.

    2. Type WIN A:\SETUP

If you are using drive B: then replace A: with B:

    3. Press the ENTER key.

To install this software from Windows:
--------------------------------------

    1. Put the disk into the floppy drive.

    2. From the File option of the Program Manager menu, select Run...

    3. Type A:\SETUP

If you are using drive B: then replace A: with B:

    4. Press the ENTER key.

It is recommended that you accept the program defaults for this
installation.

The installation will copy files to the \MUSICRCK directory on your
hard disk and create a program group on the Windows desktop.

NOTE
----
If your sound card software is not loaded then the installation of this
software will fail. Make sure you install the software from
Multimedia Installation Disk 2 first.

6.0 Installing the DOS mouse driver
====================================

A mouse driver has been supplied on this disk. This will allow you to use
your mouse with some DOS programs, such as the AMBRA Tutorial.

The following instructions tell you how to copy the mouse driver from the
installation disk and modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the mouse
driver is invoked each time you switch on your computer.

To install your mouse driver:

1. Make sure the installation disk (Disk 1) is in the floppy drive.

2. Copy the mouse driver from the floppy disk to the \DOS directory
of your hard disk. To do this type:

        COPY A:\MOUSE.COM C:\DOS

If you are using drive B: as the source drive, then replace A: with B:

3. Press the ENTER key.

To invoke the mouse driver automatically, each time the computer is switched
on, an entry can be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To do this:

4. Change to the root directory of your C: hard disk. To do this type:

C: and press the ENTER key
CD\ and press the ENTER key

5. Invoke the DOS text editor so that you can make changes to the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To do this type:

        EDIT \AUTOEXEC.BAT

    and press the ENTER key.

6. The current contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will appear on screen.
Browse through the listing to confirm that an entry does not already
exist for invoking the mouse driver. The line to check for may appear
    something like:

        C:\DOS\MOUSE

If this line is already in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then you can proceed
    to Step 9.

7. If there is no previous reference to invoke the mouse driver, then add
a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To do this:

    a) use the cursor keys (Down Arrow) to move to the end of the
AUTOEXEC.BAT listing, and to the start of a new line.

    b) Type:
                C:\DOS\MOUSE

    c) Press the ENTER key.

8. Save the current contents of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

    Press <Alt> F S

    The above key sequence means:

    a) Hold down the key marked Alt.
    b) At the same time press the 'F' key to invoke the File menu.
    c) Release the 'Alt' key.
    d) Press the 'S' key to Save the current file contents.

9. Quit the text editor. To do this:

    Press <Alt> F X

    The above key sequence means:

    a) Hold down the key marked 'Alt'.
    b) At the same time press the 'F' key to invoke the File menu.
    c) Release the 'Alt' key.
    d) Press the 'X' key to Exit from the text editor.

10. Restart your computer, observing the start up messages. A message
informing you that the mouse driver has been installed will appear.

If the message reports no mouse driver has been installed, then

    a) Switch off your computer.
    b) Check that the mouse is properly connected to the back of the
        computer.
    c) Switch on your computer.

7.0 Printing this document
===========================

If you have a printer connected to your system, you can print the contents
of this file. To print this file:

1. Make sure your printer is connected to your system.

2. Switch on your printer and make sure it is on line.

3. At the DOS prompt type:

          COPY A:\README.TXT PRN

This command assumes that the file README.TXT is on the disk in drive A:.
If you are using another drive, then replace A:\ with the appropriate
    drive reference.
