        PALMZIP.SYS Version 1.22
        ===========                                    (November 2002)

PalmZIP is a block device driver which enables access to Iomega's
Zip-drive from DOS-compatible palmtop computers (or any other PC).
PalmZIP is very small and runs on many systems that do not
satisfy the minimum requirements of Iomega's driver.

        Requirements
        ------------

Operating system: DOS 2.x or later
        CPU: 8086/88 or better
        Parallel port: IBM-PC register compatible,
                           Standard or bidirectional
        System memory: approx. 3 KByte
        Zip-drive: Parallel port version,
                           ZIPplus-drive is currently NOT supported

        Installation
        ------------

        1. Add the following line to CONFIG.SYS:

           device=[path\]palmzip.sys [options]

where [path\] is the location where palmzip.sys is stored
and [options] may be a combination of valid parameters
(see below). In many cases, you will not have to specify
any of them for the first try.

        2. Reboot to get palmZIP loaded.
Up to three additional drive letters will be created:
Under DOS 3.x and earlier, three drive letters are created
due to the need of splitting the disk into 3 partitions.
Under DOS 4.x and above, only one drive letter is added
           by default.

Alternatively, device drivers may not be loaded from CONFIG.SYS
but being installed later using special tools (like CTLOAD.COM
or LOADSYS.EXE). This method should not be used because it can
sometimes cause troubles or simply crash, depending on the DOS-
        version and memory configuration.

        Options
        -------

/LPTx Select the parallel port where the drive is connected.
              x=1..4, default: x=1

/T Generate 3 drive letters even under DOS 4.x or above.

/B Force bidirectional mode. This might be a little faster,
but is not compatible with all systems.

The option /B should be specified, if
              - palmZIP's autodetect facility fails to detect your
                bidirectional port (see also /D).
              - you dare to overdrive your standard parallel port.
This might damage the port or the Zip-drive!

/N Force nibble mode. (see also /D)
The option /N must be specified, if palmZIP starts in
bidirectional mode although your port does not support it.
This might be the case if your disks do always appear
              empty.

/Wx Initialize delay loops, but should not show great effect
when changed. Try to increase x (make slower) if the
              driver does not work.
x=0..9,A..F, default: 5..6 (yes, something in between)

/C Check if drive is connected. The driver will only be
              installed on a positive check.

        /D Show debug-informationen. Depending on your DOS-version,
              system stability may suffer.
If nibble-mode is made active, this will also be displayed
              when the driver is loaded.
Moreover, a speed index is shown, from which timeout-values
              are derived.

        Supported disk formats
        ----------------------

        1. Special format of ZIPMAN "32M/FAT12"
        2. Special format of ZIPMAN "32M/FAT16"
        3. Normal (96M/FAT16) like Iomega (100431872 Bytes capacity).

The older Iomega-format with 100448256 Bytes will NOT be
recognized. Please format such disks using ZIPMAN.

        Some special hints
        ------------------

        1. Disk cache:
PalmZIP does have its own cache because this would require con-
siderably more memory. You can start a cache software after the
installation of palmZIP to speed up the Zip-drive. I recommend
SMARTDRV.SYS (or SMARTDRV.EXE) which is part of Microsoft MSDOS
4 or later. An alternative product is NWCACHE.EXE which is in-
cluded in Caldera's DRDOS-distribution available via the inter-
        net.

        2. Two computers sharing one drive:
Although this is not recommended, you can connect the Zip-drive
to 2 computers using a simple switch box. However you should
be aware that the computer which is not currently connected
cannot see any changes on the disk and might hold invalid cache
data. Often, <Ctrl>+<C> helps to reinitialize the drive.

        3. Sharp PC-3000:
The parallel port is disabled in low-power mode. Change this
in the setup menu which appears on <Fn>+<F9>.

        4. Toshiba laptops T1000, T1200:
The parallel port can be configured as bidirectional with
SETUP1.EXE. This tool can be found at
