                        PAYROLL USA INSTALLATION
                        ------------------------

This is a DOS batch file (yes, it also works for Windows) that will
install Payroll USA in the author's default directories (or folders in
Windows terminology). This ensures that, should you register, our
upgrade program finds the previous version so it can correctly apply the
upgrade, and it is sometimes helpful in telephone support to know where
the program directories are. These directories will be created from
the root directory of the current drive, their names are \PAYPGMS (to
hold the executable files and more recent documentation), and \PAYSLIDE
(to hold the old slide show from 1990). The slide show is now dated but
you might still find it interesting as the basics are still much the
same. If you wish to recover the 878 Kb of disk space it occupies, you
can delete the slide show when you are done with it.

Files will be moved into the above directories, then Payroll USA
(PAYUSA.EXE) will be started. It will create a company configuration
file and two additional directories for your employee data, these will
also come from the root and are called \PAYIN and \PAYOUT There is an
old test employee file you can play with to see how the program works.
Payroll USA will offer to copy this onto the data directories when it
creates the configuration file. When you are done with the test file
delete the contents of \PAYIN and \PAYOUT and set up a new file with
your own employees in it (this service will also be offered by the
program each time you add an employee to the test file)

This version of Payroll USA has federal taxes for the year 2000, State
and Local taxes can be modified by the user. Payroll USA will run under
DOS or under Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. It
should run on any computer from an old 8086 up to a modern day 600 MHz
Pentium III, and probably beyond. All it needs is 640K of memory, a
hard drive with about 3 megabytes free, and a laser or dot matrix
printer (it should also work with an ink jet printer but we have not
tested it). Mouse support is enabled (if a mouse is detected), and
under Windows it can be run in a window or full screen, whichever you
prefer, and the mouse will also work.

Payroll USA is a fully functional, complete payroll system for one
company or multi-company use. Maintains employee database, prints
checks (with bank reconciliation) or payslips, summary journal, payroll
register, quarterly tax reports, (registered version also does annual W-
2's with magnetic media option), and various reports on employees such
as birthday list, mailing labels, rotary cards, pay history, etc.
Payroll register report can be exported as a .DIF or .DBF (dBASE IV)
file for optional additional manipulation in a spreadsheet or DBMS.

Payroll USA is a shareware program which means you can try before you
buy, but it does not mean it is free software. If you like the program
and continue to use it after a reasonable trial period (maximum trial 60
days please) then you must pay for it (register). Registration is
U.S.$149.95 and includes the registered user version for the tax year of
registration plus a free upgrade for the next year. Subsequent upgrades
are U.S.$100.00 per year. Registration is less than 2 years upgrades
so you are not discouraged from registering part way through a year.
The annual fee includes federal tax changes, maintenance of W-2 and
1099-Misc. forms (as the IRS do change the layout of the forms from time
to time), telephone support, and program enhancements. We are also
planning on releasing a 32 bit Windows version of Payroll USA for April
2000 at the same price. The Windows version will be file compatible
with the DOS version so you will not lose any data created with the DOS
version. Send your registration check for US$149.95 to
