WHY USE MANUSCRIPT EDITOR(TM)?

MANUSCRIPT EDITOR(TM) is a shareware DOS and Macintosh cross-platform,
32-bit database system for addresses & specialty associations, currently
being used by a Prominent Medical Journal to track reviewers & specialties.
MANUSCRIPT EDITOR(TM) can handle tens of thousands of records with lightning
speed in a "point-and-click," mouse-driven interface.

Do you track thousands of addresses and pieces of data, or want a program
that can? Eager for a 'paperless office' that never came? Look no further!

  KEY FEATURES:
+ Can enter & view alphabetized lists of thousands of addresses.
+ Can enter unlimited number of specialties for each person listed.
+ Dozens of built-in reports can be printed using menu-driven selections.
+ Can print labels & lists by country, address, name, e-mail... you name it!
+ Can EXPORT / IMPORT addresses & specialties w/other users (PC *or* Mac).
+ Can produce intelligent, automated list of people whose specialties
  match a title you enter.
+ Automatically enters overseas phone prefixes & tells what time it is.
+ Intelligent & sophisticated search feature finds names instantly!

MANUSCRIPT EDITOR(TM) can be adapted to plenty of other suitable purposes--
although designed for a publishing/editorial environment, it's useful for
tracking any large group of people for whom you need to catalog various
lists, characteristics, or specialties. Could even be used by a pizza
parlor to track its customers' topping preferences!

The continuing challenge for a medical journal is coordinating thousands
of reviewers with thousands of submitted manuscripts, AND with a huge list
of specialties. Editor and Editorial Office alike use MANUSCRIPT EDITOR(TM)
to track researchers, physicians and reviewers' specialties. But whatever
you do--if you're tired of dealing with slow, cumbersome databases that
take hours of your valuable time to maintain, or even if you're just now
needing a database, this just might do the trick!

BACK UP YOUR DATA!

PLEASE EXERCISE GOOD CARE: BACK UP FREQUENTLY. FILE CORRUPTION MAY OCCUR DUE
TO POWER OUTAGES/UNEXPECTED REBOOTS/NETWORK HANGUPS/SYSTEM CONFLICTS/OTHER
EVENTS NOT IN MANUSCRIPT EDITOR'S CONTROL. So please... backup frequently!
For best results, use a routine backup program that can compress your files.

Some users have asked what files they ought to include in a general backup
(i.e. routine backup to tape, MO, or CD-ROM device). It is advisable to back
up ALL files within the EDIT1 directory. If this proves too costly to backup
storage capacity, AT LEAST backup files with DBF, FPT, CDX, & FXP extensions.

PASSWORD PROTECTION:

The password option in MANUSCRIPT MANAGER provides limited defense against
professional hackers. However, it MIGHT be just strong enough to prevent
YOU from gaining access if you FORGET YOUR PASSWORD. So, with these keys
in mind, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED! Nevertheless, your best defense against
data snooping is to install a security/password program at the system level.

SHARING FILES ACROSS PLATFORMS (PC, Macintosh, etc.)

If you want to share databases across platforms, you can do so by selecting
the "EXPORT" item under the "Record" menu option. After exporting the range
of records you select (to a floppy or removable drive), you may transfer the
database files (possible extensions are DBF, CDX, and FPT) to a Macintosh
formatted disk or drive using a file sharing program such as PC File Exchange
or Apple File Exchange. Do not rename the files; merely convert them to the
proper [destination] format.

Then, within your Macintosh version of MANUSCRIPT EDITOR, select the "IMPORT"
item under the "Record" menu option. Proceed as the instructions guide you.

MEMORY MANAGEMENT/OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE TIPS:

If you use a memory manager, you may wish adjust your CONFIG.SYS lines to
read (replace EMM386.EXE with your own memory manager name, as appropriate):
      C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
      DEVICE=EMM386.SYS 2048

Make sure that in your CONFIG.SYS file, FILES=80 (or > 80).

The User's Reference Guide also suggests 'shutting off SMARTDRV.EXE'--if you
need memory, add a REM to the (approximate) line that executes SMARTDRV.EXE:
      REM LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE C 1024 1024 /Q
Or, if you don't want to disable SMARTDRV.EXE, try reducing the allocation:
      LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE C 512 512 /Q

Manuscript Editor takes full advantage of free space; performance increases
with the available memory. Consult your DOS/system user manual for a more
complete explanation of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
Please seek help if you have never edited these files, before changing them!

LABEL PRINTER REQUIREMENTS:

MANUSCRIPT EDITOR prints 8-line addresses to the label printer. You have some
flexibility in setting up printer options as to how this will appear on the
label, but due to the prolific number of printers and setups that are avail-
able, yours may not match the default that is set when Manuscript Editor is
first installed. You should find your printer (or a compatible type) listed
listed in the Print Setup dialog (see the User Manual or press F1 after you
start Manuscript Editor, for more information).
