                           "Directory Comments" V1.6

                              by John Augustine

"DC" (Directory Comments) was written in Assembly. DC requires little
memory and no "installation".

With DC, you can add descriptions about the files you collect, and in the
future, use the alternate "DC" (or "DCU") command to see what you have, along
with descriptions. Also, DC includes a text mode file viewer.

PLEASE READ "IMPROVE.TXT" for information about new features.

  PLEASE NOTE:

This is NOT a "free" program. See "CONCLUSION" near the end of this document
for details on making a small "donation" and becoming a "donor".

  IMPORTANT NOTE:

In order for DC to behave like a new Dos command, you must put "DC.EXE"
(displays files in alphabetical order) and/or "DCU.EXE" (displays files
unsorted) in the "COMMAND" directory/folder, sub-directory to "WINDOWS"
(95/98) directory, or "DOS" directory for Dos and Windows 3.1 computers.

DC can be considered a Dos mode alternative to the "long filename" system
used by Windows 95/98. DC makes it easy to change or add comments about files.
Also, DC can be used on old PCs with older versions of Dos.

How many times have you looked at a file/s listed in a directory/folder and
wondered, "what is it?". You download files, and months later wonder, "what
is that file/s for?".

   IMPORTANT NOTE:

Files that you delete or rename with comments will be removed from the log
the next time you use DC. In case the comment/s of a deleted or renamed
file/s is important, the "DIR-COM.LOG" is renamed to "DIR-COM.BAK", before the
new (updated) "DIR-COM.LOG" is created (when you exit DC).

DC was designed to be very automatic. The only thing you have to do is move
the comment bar to the filename and type your comment. Note: If you type over
the carriage return (represented by a symbol), it is automatically added to
the end of the line when you move to another line or press Esc to exit. The
length of a comment can be up to 64 characters. DC can handle up to 1,600
files in a directory/folder. The log that DC creates is an ascii text file.

   "DCU.EXE" (Unsorted "as is"):

The difference between "DC.EXE" and "DCU.EXE", "DCU.EXE" displays the
filenames in unsorted ("as is") order. The "DIR-COM.LOG" file will be in the
order, sorted or unsorted, based on which one was used that resulted in an
update. Note: An unsorted log file can easily be changed to a sorted log file
or vise versa.

   "DIR-COM.LOG":

"DIR-COM.LOG" is the file that holds a complete list of files (including
hidden) in a directory/folder along with a comment/s about a file/s. This
file is created in the directory/folder you are in, when you edit a comment
or "import". NOTE: If you use DC without using any of the edit keys for
comments, or do not use the "Import" feature, a "DIR-COM.LOG" will not be
created.

   USING DC:

DC (or DCU) can be used as an alternative to the "DIR" command (limited to
the current directory you are in) to view a list of files, with or without
comments.

  "IMPORT" FEATURE:

This feature (F5) allows you to import comments from another "DIR-COM.LOG",
into the location you are at. IMPORTANT: If a comment for a file/s already
exists, that line/s will be skipped. The import comments will only be placed
into "blank" (no comment) lines for matching filenames.

The filename of the importing log file can be any name. Example: A
"DIR-COM.LOG" from "PHOTOS" location was saved to a floppy disk and renamed to
"PHOTOS.LOG". This floppy is inserted into another PC with photos. Some may
be the same as those in the first PC, and some may be unique. Simply use the
command "DC" or "DCU". Next, press F5 (Import) and type "A:PHOTOS.LOG".

If the source and destination locations are in the same PC and the same
drive, you can import comments by using the "path" to the other location.
Example: Importing comments from "HER-PICS" location to "MY-PICS" where you
are located, type "DC" or "DCU" and press F5. Type, "\HER-PICS\DIR-COM.LOG".

  SEARCH FEATURE:

You can search for a file/s or comment/s. If you remember a part of the
filename or comment, any part, DC will find it/them. Example: If you search
for files with "VIEW" in the filename, it will find (examples) "PROVIEW.EXE",
"VIEWER.EXE", "GR-VIEW7.ZIP", etc. Also, if the search pattern, "VIEW" is in
a comment/s, that will be found too.

The edit "bar" will, in effect, highlight the line that contains the search
pattern (in filename and/or in comment). If unfound, a "beep" sound will
occur at the last line.

  CONCLUSION:

This is NOT a "free" program. A one time donation is expected. You choose
the amount ($5.00 minimum). For your donation, you will become a "donor".
Your name, etc. will be added to the "donors" list. As a "donor" (one time
donation), you can select (ask for) one or more programs to receive FREE such
as "Tree Restore", etc. See (use "HELP") "OTH-PGMS.TXT" for information
about other programs. Please include your e-mail address with your donation,
and the name/s of the other program/s you want (if any). I will tell you in
the email message about the attachment (programs.zip) so you know it is safe
to open. As a "donor", you will be entitled to receive all improved and new
programs (at your request) developed in the future (sent to you by e-mail).
As a "donor", you may request (from time to time) the latest list of programs
from which you can select to receive FREE. If you know another shareware
author with a better offer, please let me know.

The donation will motivate me to develop more programs and make improvements
in existing programs (add new features).

Comments or complaints are always welcomed via email. If you use "snail
mail" and expect a reply, please include a S.A.S.E.

If you are overseas, the local bank charges a $10.00 service fee for checks
outside of U.S. I recommend that you send U.S. cash instead.

Send $5.00 (or more) check, money order, or cash (put in foil for security)
