large directories listed
LClick = Left Mouse Button Click
RClick = Right Mouse Button Click

1. LClick here to STORE the currently displayed directory listing.
LClick again to retrieve the stored directory

2. This shows the currently listed directory
An LClick here will allow you to type the directory path manually.
An RClick will display stats on the currently displayed directory.
(See Latest.TXT or Online Help)

3. This displays the current time. The time displayed will go from black
to red when there is an impending Alarm.
An LClick will open the Alarm and Time Editor (see below)
An RClick will display the next Alarm time and event.

4. Directory Reversal.
An LClick will move one directory back
eg..C:\DIREC_A\DIREC_B\ 'click!' = C:\DIREC_A\
An RClick will revert to the previously displayed directory.

5. List Box Left/Right.
This is where the files and directories are displayed.
Directories are blue, Files are black.
By clicking ONCE on a Directory it will highlighted lightblue.
By clicking ONCE on a File it will be highlighted yellow.
Both selected Directories and Files will have a black background.
By holding the mouse button and moving it over unhighlighted files
they will become highlighted. If the first file you select is
highlighted all files will be unhighlighted.
When a File or Directory is hilighted it is selected for whatever action
you perform. eg..select a file and copy it to the opposite list box.
By LClicking TWICE on a Directory, you will descend into it.
By LClicking TWICE on a File, SEEKER will examine the file and
automatically launch the appropriate command for that file (Assuming
you have installed an Auto Launch command for the file (see below)).

An RClick over either List Box will activate it. A slim bar at the
bottom of the list box will turn yellow. The opposite List Box will
become inactive, it's bar will turn black.
The active list box is the SOURCE the inactive List Box is the
DESTINATION.

6. Button Banks
This refers to an entire BANK of buttons.
To switch up a BANK (1 to 2 for example) use an RClick over the
BUTTONS to the right.
To switch down a BANK (2 to 1 for example) use an RClick over the
BUTTONS to the left.
BUTTONS are described in more detail in the EDITOR section.

7. Button rows
Button banks are broken into 5 ROWS
8a. Change Button Rows DOWN - Go to previous button bank for this ROW
8b. Change Button Rows UP - Go to next button bank for this ROW
9. This displays the bank number that this row belongs to.
10. Copy Left List Box into Right List box
11. Copy Right List Box into Left List box
12. Swap Left List box with Right List box
13. Confirm File Overwrite/Delete
14. Confirm Directory Delete
15. Include File Size Alongside Filename
16. Include File Attributes Alongside Filename
W = Writable(deletable), H = Hidden File, S = System File, A = Archive
17. Include File Date Alongside Filename
18. Include File Time Alongside Filename
19. Include Hidden Files in display and all operations.
During Directory recursions ALL files will be acted on regardless
of wether they are Hidden or not.
20. Enable Long Filename Display & Processing.
The most obvious result of Enabling Long Filenames is that the Files
and Directories will be displayed with their (truncated) Long Filenames.
This option must be enabled if you wish to retain long filenames when
acting on win95 files. Long filename retention is limited to 92
characters - you will recieve a message advising any truncations
that occur.

As you will notice, when a File or Directory is selected, it will
revert to it's short name. By using a right mouse click over the
active List Box the Long name will be restored.

NOTES: 1. This option will slow SEEKER's operation when acting on large
numbers of files.
2. Directories will NOT keep long filenames.

21. Action Speed
SEEKER has 3 speeds of operation.
Crawl - Crawl will slowly step through every File and Directory
displaying the name, pausing then acting.
This will give you an opportunity to abort if required.
Fly - This is the speedy approach to processing. SEEKER will FLY
along, rapidly displaying file and directory names as it
processes them.
Turbo - This is blindingly fast, however names etc will not be
displayed and the opportunity to abort is gone.
The exception to this is deleting. Deleting will
automatically switch to Fly mode and enable Aborting
(it will switch back to turbo mode on completion)
To cycle the Speed use an LClick on the Action Speed Button.

22. SOUND - Toggle Sound On or Off
Seeker will look in the CONFIG directory for:
BUTN.VOC - Button Clicks
ALERT.VOC - Errors and Attention Messages.
END.VOC - After Launches or Macros are completed.
23. MACRO - Record Macro or Playback Macro
(See MACRO.DOC for Macro Language)

24. SEEKER Editor - The Editor will let you create your own command
buttons and button banks. (See below - Editor)

25. Split Directory Switches.
If a directory contains more than 410 entries SEEKER will begin to
split them. You will see a number of buttons appear where SEEKER is
normally displayed. Button 1 will display the first 450 entries,
button 2 will display the next 410 entries..etc..
SEEKER is limited to 4500 entries in a single directory.

It should be noted that these 'split' lists are all handled
seperately. So any operation on Split 1 will not be performed on
Split 2 etc..

----------------------------------------------------------------------

DEFAULT COMMAND BUTTONS

NOTE: For immediate descent MKDIR (>> & <<) directory names are
limited to 13 characters. MKDIR without descent does not have
this limitiation (Use MKDIR and THEN descend).
CREAT Create a new file in the ACTIVE List Box

FIND Recursively descend into selected directories searching for Files or
Directories with names matching the text entered at the prompt.

FIT? Add the total number of bytes for all selected files and recursively
descend into highlighted directories and count the total number of
bytes contained in them checking the running total against the
capacity of the destination drive.

(Win95 required)
CMD This will prompt you for a DOS command OR program name.
If the command you enter is a program, the program should either
be in your current search path, the SEEKER directory OR in the
currently active List Box.
RUN See below

SHOW Display picture using SSHOW (SEEK SHOW - see below)
ANIM Play FLIC animation using SANIM (SEEK ANIM - see below)
READ Read a file using SREAD (SEEK READ - see below)
SPLAY Play a VOC file

RUN
---
Of the Internal Commands RUN is editable. The reasons for this are the
numerous options attached to this command.

It's basic operation is to RUN other programs. Simply select an EXE, COM
or BAT file then LClick on RUN. This will put SEEKER to sleep and launch
the new program. When SEEKER goes to sleep, virtually all memory is freed
for the new program. When the program has completed SEEKER is ready to go
again.

Options for the RUN Command are identical to those used for your own
commands (discussed in the Editor section below). As an External Launch
the RUN command will act on single files only.

NOTES: 1. COPYING & MOVING. When SEEKER performs an operation on a
Directory it will recursively descend into the Directory
acting on ALL files and subdirectories.
Unlike DOS Moving directories with SEEKER does actually move them.
To rename a directory use the RENAM button.

2. DELETING DIRECTORIES. When SEEEKER is deleting a directory
ALL Files and subdirectories will be deleted REGARDLESS
of their attributes. If a File or Directory is set as protected
it will automatically have it's protect bits reset then be
deleted. It should be obvious that Directory deletion should
be used with caution.

COMMAND OPTIONS
---------------

DIRECTORIES
-----------
If you wish to attach a directory to a button all you need to ensure is
that the last character of the command (this would be the full path) is
a backslash ... \
This tells SEEKER that you wish to load a directory. The position of the
button will determine which List Box it will be loaded into. If the button
is under the Left List Box - that is where the directory will be loaded.
Ditto for the Right List Box.

PROGRAMS - EXE, COM, BAT.
--------
For programs there are 10 control switches that can be used.
The control switches are: ( A, L, B, P, S, &, +, *, !, C )
These switches will influence how your command operates. By using these
switches alone or combined you have numerous launch capabilities.
These switches MUST be preceded by the hash symbol # and the L switch
is a prerequisite.

A - Act on files. The selected files will be sent to your command.
An example of this switch is viewing pictures. Select the pictures
LClick your view button and the pictures will be displayed.

L - Launch Program. In order for your button to work it must be able
to launch a program. An L by itself will Launch in sleep mode.
This is not as fast as Background mode but it conserves memory.

B - Background Launch. Background launching is very fast. The drawback
is that SEEKER does not sleep. In some cases it pays to try this mode
first and if it doesn't work then remove the B and use a sleep mode
launch.

P - Launch Pause. There are times when an external or background launch
will execute and return to SEEKER before you have the chance to see
any messages that are displayed by the launched program.
The P switch will invoke a prompt to press Enter before reactivating
SEEKER (regardless of the launch mode).
An additional method of obtaining a pause (instead of using the
' P ' COMMAND SWITCH) is to press the LEFT SHIFT KEY when LClicking
on the command button. This additional method is designed for
intermittent use.

S - Launch Single. When launching an external program by clicking on it's
button, SEEKER will normally process all of those files that are
selected. The S switch will bypass this multiple processing procedure
and process the first file only.
A method of temporarily disabling the multiple processing procedure
when multiple files are selected (instead of using the ' S ' COMMAND
SWITCH) is to press the RIGHT SHIFT KEY when LClicking the Command
button. Both methods will cause SEEKER to process the first selected
file only.

& - Act or Launch. If you have the A switch incorporated, using the &
switch will tell SEEKER to Launch the program even if there is no
file selected. If the & switch is not used and no files are selected
SEEKER will not launch the program.

! - Use the directory where the program is stored as the current directory.
Normally SEEKER will use the ACTIVE LIST BOX as the current directory.
(See: 3_Latest.TXT for a more detailed description of this switch)

C - Confirm Button Launch. You will be asked for confirmation before
the program attached to your button is launched. (Useful for Auto
Luanch Buttons).

+ - Include arguments. Many commands require options to be sent to them..
eg FORMAT requires a drive letter. This switch will cause SEEKER to
prompt you for arguments you wish to use with your command (eg..A:\)

The position of this switch also influences where the argument is
placed. If the + is placed BEFORE the A switch (act on file) then
the selected filename will be sent after the arguments.
If the + is placed AFTER the A then the arguments will follow the
selected filename.

An additional method of inserting arguments (instead of using the
' + ' COMMAND SWITCH) is to press the LEFT SHIFT KEY and CTRL KEY
when LClicking on the command button. You will first be prompted
for the arguments to insert and then for their position.

* - Shutdown. This switch will load your program and shutdown SEEKER
completely. Designed as a memory maximising switch, it will
disable a SEEKER relaunch after your program has completed.
It is ignored if the B switch (Background Launch) is also used.

Examples
--------
1. Launch a program with a selected filename
Editor Command Line: SSHOW#AL
Selected Filename: NICEPIC.PCX
command filename = SSHOW NICEPIC.PCX

2. Insert arguments BEFORE a selected filename
Editor Command Line: MORE#+AL
Selected filename: TEST.DOC
User enters < at SEEKER request.
command arguments filename = MORE < TEST.DOC

3. Insert arguments AFTER a selected filename
Editor Command Line: PKUNZIP#A+L
Selected Filename: TEST.ZIP
User enters -x at SEEKER request
command filename arguments = PKUNZIP TEST.ZIP -x

4. Launch a program with a selected filename,
Launch anyway if no file selected.
Editor Command Line: PCPAINT#A&L
A. Filename was selected
command filename = PCPAINT NICEPIC.PCX
B. Filename wasn't selected
command = PCPAINT

In case A the program runs and loads the picture.
In case B the program runs.

5. Launch a program with a selected filename as a Background task,
Launch anyway if no file selected.
Editor Command Line: EDIT#A&LB

6. Launch a program with a selected filename as a Background task,
Insert arguments BEFORE filename,
Act on File,
Launch with Arguments anyway if no file selected.
Editor Command Line: EDIT#+A&LB

This last example displays a way of using selected files OR filenames that
you enter at the prompt (don't forget the path). One point here - if no
arguments are entered the program will still launch.

NOTES:
1. The commands that can be attached to each button cannot exceed 55
characters (including switches). If this poses a problem you can create
a BAT file which can contain any number of characters. You then use the
BAT file for your command.

2. If the program you wish to run does not reside in your computers standard
search path you will need to enter the full path and filename. Once again
BAT files can be used (the bat files must reside in either your search
path or in the SEEKER directory).

3. If the program you wish to launch, requires arguments which are always the
same (eg... PKUNZIP -x), you can avoid the argument requester requirement
by entering the argument as part of the command line. You will, however
need to insert quotes around each argument you attach.
eg... PKUNZIP "-x"#AL

4. The situation may arise when you inadvertantly Save and Exit from the
EDITOR and destroy your button bank/s. To restore the previously active
button bank (regardless of wether you have exited SEEKER), LClick on
the STATUS BOX as soon as you enter the EDITOR. If you decide you do not
wish to restore after all, LClick on No Save Exit.

PALETTE
-------
The PALETTE BOX has two purposes. If you are EDITing a button and you LClick
on a colour in the PALETTE BOX, the text of the BUTTON you are editing will
change to this colour. An RClick will change the background colour of the
selected button.

The second purpose of the PALETTE BOX is to change the palette of SEEKER.
By selecting a colour you will see it's RGB values. These are in the range
of 0 to 63 respectively. By LClicking on an arrow button to the left or
right of either R,G or B the Red Green & Blue values will be modified up
or down.
If you wish to make a large alteration you can click with the both the Left
mouse button AND the Right mouse button and the values will change rapidly.

Below the RGB selectors are the UNDO and SAVE. UNDO will undo any changes
you have made to the palette. SAVE will modify the palette that SEEKER uses.
UNDO will only undo changes that are made BEFORE you save them.
The global NO SAVE AND EXIT will NOT undo changes to the palette that have
been saved.

BANKS
-----
DUP BANK
This option will duplicate the currently displayed bank into a new bank.

ADD BANK
This option will create a new bank with all 60 buttons cleared.
The currently selected colours will be installed into the new buttons.

DEL BANK
This option will completely remove the currently displayed button bank.

<< ALL >>
Assuming you have more than one bank installed, the ROW/BANK SHIFTER will
move entire BANKS or individual ROWS either up or down.
By clicking on ALL the shifter will cycle through 1 to 5 rows returning
to ALL. This will let you select the ROW you want to act on.

If you have ALL selected and you click on '<<', ALL BANKS will be
shifted down.
eg...
Assuming you have 3 banks installed and ALL is selected
a click on '<<' will:
BANK 1 becomes BANK 2,
BANK 2 becomes BANK 3,
BANK 3 becomes BANK 1.

If ALL is changed to 1 you will be acting on ROW 1. Therefore:
Assuming you have 3 banks installed and 1 is selected a click on << will:
BANK 1 Row 1 is replaced by BANK 2 Row 1,
BANK 2 Row 1 is replaced by BANK 3 Row 1,
BANK 3 Row 1 is replaced by BANK 1 Row 1.

GLOBALS
-------

LOAD A BANK
When this option is selected you will be prompted for the name
of the BANK to load. DFLT.BNK will load the Internal SEEKER
BANK. (This will enable you to extract an individual internal
button if needed).
To abort the Load press escape.
The loaded BANK will be appended to the BANKS currently in use.

If the BANK file that you load contains more than one BANK,
you will be prompted for the action required: Replace all
BANKS currently in use OR Append the loaded BANKS to the current
BANKS in use.

SAVE BANK AS
Obviously this option is for saving any BANKS that you have
created. If more than one BANK is currently in use you have
the option of saving ALL BANKS or the currently displayed BANK.

SAVE AND EXIT
Save ALL changes (including the Palette) and exit.

NO SAVE AND EXIT
Revert to original state before Editing and exit.
This will NOT undo changes to the palette that have been saved.

------------------------------ END OF EDITOR --------------------------

ALARM & TIME EDITOR
-------------------

The clock is displayed at the top centre of the display. It is normally
displayed in black. It will be displayed in red if there is an impending
alarm event.

An LClick on the clock box (where the time is displayed) will present you
with the ALARM & TIME EDITOR.

STATUS BOX - initially displays the current Time, Day of Week and Date.
also used to confirm changes.
TIME SET - change the time for the system clock OR a selected ALARM
DATE SET - change the date for the system clock OR a selected ALARM
SELECT EVENT - Enter an EVENT for a selected ALARM
1 to 5 - Select an ALARM to view and/or change
BLANKER - Blanker delay.
< > - Change up or down. (See below - ARROW CONTROL)

TIME
----
The Alarm & Time Editor will let you change the system Time and Date
by changing the Time or Date in the TIME SET and DATE SET boxes.
By LClicking on the arrows to the left and right of either the
TIME or DATE set boxes the display will turn to red indicating a change
has been made. The STATUS BOX will ask for confirmation of the new system
Time and/or Date. LClick in the STATUS BOX to confirm the new settings
or outside of the Editor to abort the changes.

ALARM CONTROL - by selecting an ALARM BOX (1 to 5) you will see:
------------
In the STATUS BOX - the EVENT attached to this ALARM
In the TIME BOX - the Time this Alarm is set for
In the DATE BOX - the Date this Alarm is set for

The Time and Date for an alarm can be set in the same way that the
system Time or Date is set (see above).

When setting an ALARM you can also click on the DATE BOX itself and it will
change to EVERYDAY. This enables you to set an ALARM to go off at a specific
time everyday.

By clicking on SELECT EVENT you will be prompted for an event to attach to
this Alarm.

There are 4 event types that can be attached to an Alarm.
Beep, Sound, Launch or Message.

To sound a BEEP or beeps at a given time use the key word BIP followed
by the number of beeps required. There is a maximum of 9 beeps.
eg.. BIP1 = 1 beep. BIP9 = 9 beeps.

To play a voc SOUND at a specified time use the keyword VOC, followed
directly by the sound file name (including path if it's not in the
SEEKER directory. The sound will loop if you follow the sound name
with #x where x is the number of loops (0=loop continuously)
eg...VOCALARM.VOC#0 - ALARM.VOC is in the SEEKER directory and
will loop continuously.

To execute a LAUNCH, follow the procedures and rules for attaching a
command to a button as described in EDITOR - COMMAND OPTIONS (see above).

In addition to the Launch and BEEP functions as alarm events, you can
also attach a simple MESSAGE.
By omitting the # (launch command flag) the text entered will be displayed
as your event. eg... BIP1Ring Bill NOW!! This will beep once and display
the message Ring Bill NOW!!.

Once you have setup your ALARM Time, Date and Event click in the STATUS BOX
to confirm your new Alarm settings.

NOTES:
1. You are limited to 25 characters in your ALARM EVENT.
2. You can combine beeps with launch events.eg..BIP3SSHOW REMINDER.PCX#LB
will beep 3 times and display your selected picture.

BLANKER DELAY
-------------
Click to right or left to increase or decrease the delay before SEEKER will
blank the screen. Set this to zero if you do not want a blanker.

ARROW CONTROL
-------------
When making any changes you can use the keyboard to modify the changes
you are making.

When LClicking on an up or down arrow:

MODIFIER ACTION MODIFICATION

AUTO LAUNCHING
--------------

Instead of having to select a file then click a button to act on it,
Auto Launching will allow you to simply double click on the file and the
action will be automatically executed.
For example, double clicking on a pcx picture will launch the pcx viewer.

To setup Auto Launching you will first need a button that you would normally
use to act on a particular type of file. (eg.. A button for viewing PCX pics)
Once you have the button installed, you can then then attach a filetype to
it.

Assuming you have the button installed...

QUICK START
-----------
Simply put, to attach a file to a button select the file, then pressing
and holding the ALT key, click on the button you wish to attach your
file to.
To remove Auto Launching from a BUTTON do exactly the same but don't
select any files.
\_______________________________________________________________________/

There are 2 methods used for Auto Attaching. The first method uses the
extension at the end of the file ( .PCX for example).
The second method scans the selected file and uses the first 3 characters
within it as the tag.

Using the first method can sometimes be more reliable as the contents of
different files of the same type do not always have a reliable identifier.
The second method however has the advantage of recognising files when there
is no extension.

If using the second method to attach files, it is highly recomended that
you use the maximum of 10 selected files when attaching. SEEKER will scan
all of these files looking for the most reliable tag to use. At the end of
it's scan it will advise you of what has been decided as the prefered tag.
It will also tell you how many matches where found. This gives an indication
of the reliability of the tag. If you get 10 matches then it's very reliable,
1 match is not good.
SEEKER will then ask wether to use it's SELECTED tag or ALL tags. The SELECTED
tag will write one record (it's SELECTED tag). ALL tags will write all tags
that have been identified as unique (as well as it's prefered tag).
(This would enable you to scan GIF, PCX, BMP etc etc in one step)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

HOT KEYS
--------

Hot keys are another method of rapidly launching an application.
Your entire keyboard can be used for Hot Key launches. The only rule that
applies is that there MUST be at least one qualifier.
(Cap's Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock and Insert are excluded as Hot Keys)

_______________________________________________________________________
/ \
QUICK START
-----------
To attach a Hot Key to a Button simply press the Ctrl Key and LClick on
the button. After recieving the 'Waiting Hot Key Combination' Message,
press the keys (including a QUALIFIER) you wish to use as Hot Keys for
that button.

To remove a Hot Key from a button, press Ctrl Alt and LClick on the
button.
\_______________________________________________________________________/

The QUALIFIERS are as follows:
LShift (Left Shift), RShift (Right Shift), Alt and Ctrl.
In addition the Right Mouse Button can be used as a qualifier.

[LShift - S] is not the same as a [LShift - Ctrl - S]

From this point on the button will launch as though you had clicked on it
whenever you press it's corresponding Hot Key.

An example of this would be to attach [Right Mouse Button - DEL] to the
delete button. After selecting files an [RClick - DEL] would delete them.

When attaching or using the Hot Keys you must press and hold the qualifier
BEFORE you press the appropriate command key.

you will be prompted to select a button. LClick on the button you wish to
attach the File or Directory to (click anywhere but on a button to abort).

You will then have the option of inserting the File or Directory as
a temporary measure or permanently. Temporary insertion will last until
an RClick over the button banks.

The first 5 characters of the File name OR the last 5 characters of a
Directory name will be used as the button NAME.

You can also insert the current path (displayed in the Path Display Box &
listed in the List Box) by pressing the LEFT SHIFT KEY and LClicking in
the Path Display Box. Once again you will be asked to select the button
you wish to attach the path to. This feature overcomes any limitiations
you may experience in using the single Path Store/Restore.

ERRORS
------

Due to the dynamic nature of DOS and SEEKER, errors can and probably will
occur. Errors that may be experienced whilst using SEEKER can be broken down
into 2 main classes.

1. Interrupt Error [Error Description]
Interrupt errors are normally caused by an oversight on the part of the
User.

Make sure you're not trying to act on a write protected disk.

2. SEEKER Logic Errors
These are errors that will occur when SEEKER attempts to perform an
operation that is beyond the normal DOS boundaries.

CAN'T LOCK ON PATH.
The reasons for this error occuring are numerous.
A quick solution to this error is to quickly recurse back one directory
and re-enter again. Long Filenames on directories will often be the cause
of this particular error.

FILE GENERATION ERROR.
This problem will normally occur when you have reached the maximum PATH
length that DOS can handle. Although SEEKER will attempt to get around
this barrier, in some cases it cannot.
Another cause is the duplication of a filename. VERY Long filenames are
particularly vunerable to this error.

CAN'T SAVE CONFIG FILE
This is due to a memory allocation failure. The memory pool has been
fragmented to such an extent that file access has been denied.
(If you delete the SEEKER directory this error will also occur)

Hopefully you will not experience too many errors, if however you do
and there seems to be no obvious solution please contact tech support
via EMAIL, FAX or INTERNET.
