1. Getting Started Quickly
==========================
Perform the following steps:
a. Copy/ unzip the files TRACK0.COM, SF.EXE, STATUS.EXE, TRACK0.TXT, T0.BAT
   on your harddisk.
b. Boot your system in Command Prompt/ MS-DOS mode or restart your computer
in MS-DOS mode (in case you are running WINDOWS).
c. Run the file TRACK0.COM.
d. Get any track 0 bad floppy (1.2 MB or 1.44 MB) and insert it in the floppy
   drive.
e. Run SF.EXE to format the floppy.
f. Once the floppy is formatted by SF.EXE, copy any data on the floppy.

In case any messages are flashed, try to comply with the messages if
possible. For more details about the messages read Appendix 1.

YOU HAVE NOW SUCCESSFULLY USED A TRACK 0 BAD FLOPPY.
NOTE:
-----
I) If a floppy cannot be formated by SURE FORMATTER then
  a) either, the floppy dose not have even a single good track on it i.e. the
floppy is totally useless and should be thrown away,
  b) or, your floppy drive is defective/damaged (i.e. not working properly).
II) If no floppy could be formatted by SURE FORMATTER then your floppy drive is
SURELY defective/damaged (i.e. not working properly).

2. TRACK0.COM - TRACK 0 RECTIFIER (unregistered trial version 4.8) for DOS
==========================================================================
This is a SHAREWARE program which makes it possible to use track 0 bad
floppies just like good floppies. This program gets resident in memory and
continuously monitors all the floppies that are used. It, while remaining
totally transparent to good floppies, enables the user to use track 0 bad
floppies by any one of the following two methods :-
1. Swap track method - swaps the defective track 0 with the first good track
			encountered on the floppy.
2. Non swap track method - dosenot swap the defective track 0.
The user can perform all the operations (format, copy, delete etc.) on a track
0 bad floppy just like as on a good floppy. You can even use utlities like NDD,
DISKEDIT etc. on the floppy.

Whenever the program encounters a bad floppy on which swap track method is
applied, it shows dots on the screen. Each dot represents a bad track
encountered before the first good track. Also when a floppy is used for
the first time dots will appear on the screen. If the dots move very slowly,
the user can try pressing ESC key to bypass dots.
During the course of its operation, TRACK0.COM may also flash certain
messages on the screen (see appendix 1). Each of these messages are accompanied
by a particular sound. These messages are self explanatory and user must
comply with these messages.
When verification mode is on, this program verifies all writes on a floppy
drive to ensure integrity of the data. By default verification mode is on
unless expressly turned off by the command line parameter.

NOTE: 1. Before using a track 0 bad floppy this program must be loaded in
         memory.
      2. When using a track 0 bad floppy for the first time under this
program, you must format the floppy by SF.EXE.
      3. This unregistered trial version will work on/under DOS only and not
on/under WINDOWS. To clarify further, this program will not work
under Normal GUI boot up mode of WINDOWS 95, but will work under
Command Prompt (non GUI) boot up mode of WINDOWS 95.
      4. This version is written for 1 .44 MB and 1.2 MB floppies. It
automatically detects the floppy drive on your system and presumes
that all floppies inserted in the 1.44 MB and 1.2 MB the drive are of
1.44 MB and 1.2 MB respectively. If you intend to use any other type
of floppy (say 360 KB) then you must first disable the program with
the /D command line option (see below).

Following are the eight command line parameters available:
S - Always swap the track 0 of a track 0 bad floppy and donot ask the user
(i.e. always adopt method 1. stated above without prompting for the users
    choice when formating a floppy.)
N - Never swap the track 0 of a track 0 bad floppy and donot ask the user
(i.e. always adopt method 2. stated above without prompting for the users
    choice when formating a floppy.)
A - Asks the user whether to swap or not to swap track 0 (default).
(i.e. program will always ask the user which method is to be adopted when
    formating a floppy.)
O - Turn verification off. Note-it is not recommended to turn verification off.
V - Turn verification on (default).
D - Disable the program. The program stays in the memory but will have no
    effect at all.
E - Enable the program. Enables the previously disabled program. By default the
    program is always enabled.
M - Toggles the message displaying on/off. When ON (default), messages are
displayed on the screen along with their respective sounds. When OFF,
messages are not displayed on the screen but only their respective sound is
    produced.
T0.BAT shows a typical way to start TRACK0.COM.

You can also change the above parameters after the program is loaded in memory
by again executing the program and specifing the required parameters in the
command line. You can also come to know about the current setting by executing
the program again without any command line parameter.

Both the above methods (1 and 2) stated above have their merits and demerits
which are stated below:
A. Merits of method 1 (Swap track method)
   1. This method is more comprehensive than the other method. This method
guarantees working of almost all track 0 bad floppies. All track 0 bad
floppies may not work under method 2.
   2. Usable space on a track 0 bad floppy will generally be much more under
method 1 than under method 2.
B. Merits of method 2 (Non swap track method)
   1. A track 0 bad floppy can also be made independently bootable under method
2 (to make a floppy bootable use "sys a:" command after formating the
floppy by SF.EXE). But this cannot be done under method 1.
   2. When reading data from a floppy formated under method 2, the presence of
TRACK0.COM in memory is not necessary. Presence of TRACK0.COM is necessary
only when writing data. This means floppies formated under method 2 may
also be sent to other distant palces where TRACK0.COM may not be availabe.

Merit of turning verification on: Data integrity and validity is ensured.
Demerit of turning verification on: All data writing operations on floppy get
                                    slowed down.

Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

3. SF.EXE - SURE FORMATER (unregistered trial version 4.8) for DOS
==================================================================
This is a SHAREWARE program for formating floppies similar to the DOS
FORMAT.COM. Sometimes FORMAT.COM falsely marks some sectors as bad. These
sectors are actually not bad. This is because DOS FORMAT marks all the
sectors on a side/head of a track of a floppy as bad even if there is only
one sector actually bad on such side/head. You may have noticed that the no.
of sectors reported as bad (on 1.44 MB floppy) by FORMAT.COM is always
divisible by 18 (the no. of sectors on a side/head of a track of a 1.44 MB
floppy). SF.EXE dosenot show such a behaviour. Therefore SF.EXE may show much
less bytes in bad sectors as compared to FORMAT.COM.

All track 0 bad floppies MUST be formatted by this program, although other
(track 0 good) floppies can also be formatted by this program.

This program can be terminated at any time by pressing ESC and the
floppy will be available for use. However, after pressing ESC you may hear a
beep sound and see a warning (specially when you format a floppy for the first
time under this program). You are advised to adhere to the warning.

Following are the command line parameters available:
A,1 - specifies the floppy drive to format
B,2 - specifies the floppy drive to format
S - format the floppy in swap track mode (applicable only for track 0 bad
      floppies)
N - format the floppy in non swap track mode (applicable only for track 0
      bad floppies).
This version is written for 1.44 MB and 1.2 MB floppies. It automatically
detects the floppy drive on your system (if only one drive is present) and
presumes that all floppies inserted in 1.44 MB and 1.2 MB drives are of 1.44 MB
and 1.2 MB respectively.

NOTE:
-----
I) If a floppy cannot be formated by SURE FORMATTER then
  a) either, the floppy dose not have even a single good track on it i.e. the
floppy is totally useless and should be thrown away,
  b) or, your floppy drive is defective/damaged (i.e. not working properly).
II) If no floppy could be formatted by SURE FORMATTER then your floppy drive is
SURELY defective/damaged (i.e. not working properly).

Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

4. STATUS.EXE
=============
This program gives the status of the track 0 of a floppy.
The floppy must be previously formatted under SF.EXE.

5. Appendix 1 - Messages flashed by TRACK0.COM
=============================================
1. Floppy disk unstable !. Format/ reformat the floppy as soon as possible.
   -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This message is flashed when any unmarked bad sector is encountered on
the track 0 of a floppy i.e. when a previously good sector on the track
0 of a floppy becomes bad. This means it will be risky to copy/ store
data on the floppy without reformating it. The floppy must be therefore
immediately formated/ reformated. Any data on the floppy, which can be
recovered, may be copied to hard disk before formating/ reformating the
   floppy.
Sound info: frequency=300, seconds=.6 (deep dul sound)

2. Bad sector(s) found and marked.
Please take the floppy out, abort operation and try afresh.
   -----------------------------------------------------------
During the course of writing any data on the floppy if any unmarked bad
sector (other than the sectors covered above in message 1) is encountered,
then this message will be displayed. Such a sector will automatically and
instantly be marked as bad in the FAT. Since such a marking is done in the
middle of an ongoing operation/ program, such operation/ program may get
out of synchronisation and may not take note of such a marking. Therefore,
such operation/ program must be immediately aborted and the floppy may be
taken out of the drive. Such operation / program can be started afresh
again. Also note that because of such midway abortion, some lost chains/
clusters may come on the floppy. The user can run CHKDSK.EXE /F (SCANDISK
not necessary) to remove such lost chains/ clusters on the floppy.
Sound info: frequency=650, seconds=.6 (sharper beep sound)

3. Attempt made to write on a sector which is already marked as bad.
   -----------------------------------------------------------------
This message will be displayed whenever any data is written, on the floppy,
on a sector which is already marked as bad in the FAT. This message is for
   information only.
Sound info: frequency=1100, seconds=.1 (fine needle beep sound)

4. Retrying may help.
   ------------------
This message is displayed when a CRC error is encountered when reading data
from a floppy. Such type of errors can generally be overcomed by retrying
two or three times. The user may also retry two or three times.
Sound info: frequency=1100, seconds=.1 (fine needle beep sound)

5. Error while reading FAT1 sector. FAT 1 sector swapped with FAT 2.
   -----------------------------------------------------------------
This message is generally accompanied by floppy disk unstable message. When
any unmarked bad sector is encountered while reading FAT 1, the program
automatically reads the corresponding sector of FAT 2 and substitutes that
sector in place of the aforementioned FAT 1 bad sector. Hence if FAT 1 of a
floppy (which may contain precious data !) becomes bad (physically), FAT 2
   is automatically used.
Sound info: frequency=1100, seconds=.1 (fine needle beep sound)

6. Attempt made to write on a bad sector on track 0.
   -----------------------------------------------------------------
This message will be displayed whenever any data is written, on the floppy,
on track 0, on a sector which is already identified as bad. This message is
   for information only.
Sound info: frequency=1100, seconds=.1 (fine needle beep sound)

6. Appendix 2 - Important highlights of the program
=================================================
1. Makes almost all track 0 bad floppies usable JUST LIKE good floppies. You
can even run utilities like NDD, Diskedit on such floppies.
2. You can also make a track 0 bad floppy bootable.
3. You can also use track 0 bad floppies to transfer data form one place to
another irrespective of the fact whether such other place has Track 0
   Rectifier or not.
4. Any unmarked bad sectors encountered on a floppy are, on the fly, marked as
   bad in the FAT.
5. Sure Formater may reduce the number of bytes in bad sectors by as much as
18 (eighteen) times on 1.44 MB floppies and by 15 (fifteen) times on 1.2 MB
floppies, as compared to DOS FORMAT.COM.
6. In case FAT 1 of a floppy (which may contain precious data !) get bad
(physically), FAT 2 is automatically used.
7. In build verification of all data written on the floppy ensures data validity
   and integrity.
