          PkBackup is being marketed in this special form as
shareware. This means you have the opportunity to use and
evaluate it before you decide whether to buy. If you regularly
use PkBackup, or any of its "offspring" programs, then you are
required to register according to the instructions on page 5 of
this document.  (The cost as of this writing is $10.00 Canadian
per single-user license.  For site license information, please
contact the publisher.)  When you register, you receive a copy of
the latest registered version of PkBackup, plus any enhancements
that may have been added since this document was released.  Using
this shareware issue for more than 14 days constitutes "regular"
use under this license, and requires the user to register.

    If you obtained this program from a shareware disk
distributor, then you have paid only for the service of copying
this disk, but you have not paid for the program itself.  The
publisher receives no part of the price you may have paid to a
disk distributor for this disk.

Why use PkBackup?

     Anyone downloading files from bulletin boards should be
familiar with PKUNZIP for unpacking those files. PkZip, however
is a very powerful tool when used to make backups. Multiple files
can be compress into a single file larger than a floppy and
stored on a series of disks. The problem is the hours of hunting
in the documentation to do just what you want. Pkbackup can be
used automate Pkzip with a graphic interface under windows.


What is PkBackup?

     PkBackup is a utility acting as a front end to PKZIP. Run
under WINDOWS, PkBackup will allow easy selection of directories
to be saved. Then, the complete directory, including
subdirectories if selected will be compressed and saved on the
designated floppy(s). 


What is Included?

README.TXT - This file.

PKBACKUP.EXE - The program file to run under WINDOWS.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS - NOT INCLUDED.

IBM Compatible with WINDOWS 3 and up.
VBRUN200 - DLL file available on most bulletin boards.
PKZIP Version 2 - (Version 2.04G is the latest as of this
writing)

INSTALLATION (start from DOS)

1. Install PKZIP as per the instruction from PKWARE.

2. The directory containing PKZIP must be added to the PATH
   command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Check your DOS manual for
   details.

3. Copy PKBACKUP.EXE to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.

4. Start WINDOWS. (Refer to the WINDOWS manual for details on
   the following instructions.)

5. Select the GROUP in which you wish PkBackup to reside.

6. From the FILE menu, select NEW.

7. Chose "Program Item" and use the BROWSE feature to install
   the PkBackup icon.

8. To run PkBackup, double click on its icon.



RUNNING PkBackup

1. Click once on the OK button to start. (The registered version
   does not make you chase any buttons!)

2. Select the following by clicking on the appropriate button:

     Subdirectories: ON - This will zip all files in the selected
                          directory and all files in every
                          subdirectory under the selected
                          directory. (Selecting C:\ will backup
                          the complete drive C:) The directory
                          structure is also saved.


                    OFF - This will save all files in the
                          selected directory, but anything in
                          lower nested directories are not saved.


     Multidisk:      ON - PKZIP will prompt for another
                          destination disk when required.

                    OFF - File to be stored must fit on one
                          floppy. PKZIP will abort without saving
                          anything if the selected files will not
                          fit on one floppy.

     Compression:   MAX - Maximum compression. Slower, but
                          produces a smaller output file.

                   NORM - Normal compression. A compromise
                          between speed and output file size.


     Drive: A: or B: - Selection of destination drive. 


3. Select the source drive using the drive box in the top centre
   of the screen.


4. Select the directory to be saved. Double click on the desired
subdirectory and the Source and Destination names appear. These
must be set before the "Start Backup" button is clicked.



5. Click on "Start Backup" and watch it go - simple!
