             MINIMUM USER'S GUIDE FOR SUPER-MEMO 6

What is SuperMemo 6 used for?

SuperMemo 6 may be used to learn languages, sciences, medicine, etc.
The learned knowledge must be represented in the question-answer form.
SuperMemo minimizes time necessary for learning, allows to learn with
speed that almost does not change with the size of the learned material
and nearly eliminates the problem of forgetting.
When compared to traditional methods, SuperMemo accelerates the process of
learning 10-50 times by means of repetition scheduling.

What are the operations necessary to use SuperMemo 6?

There are only five simple operations that the learner has to know when
using SuperMemo 6:

 1. Initialize - creates a new collection of disk files needed to store
question-answer pairs. This collection of files is called a database.
To initialize a database do the following:
      - press Alt-I
      - type in a new name for the database (e.g. BIOLOGY) and press Enter

 2. Open - prepares a database for learning and for adding new
    question-answer pairs.
To open a database do the following:
      - press Alt-O or F3
      - by means of arrow keys, move the dark selector to the name of the
database that is to be opened
      - press Enter

 3. Expand - adds new question-answer pairs to the database:
      - press Alt-E
      - type in the text of the question
      - press ESC
      - type in the text of the answer
      - type ESC two times

 4. Learn - to learn and repeat the knowledge stored in the database:
      - press Alt-L
      - respond to all messages presented in the center of the screen
        by pressing Enter
      - read the question and try to answer it verbally or in your mind
      - press any key
      - compare the answer with your response and input the response
quality (grade scale from 0-very bad to 5-excellent)
      - press Enter two times, and continue repeating the remaining
        question-answer pairs

  5. Quit - to quit SuperMemo 6:
      - press Alt-Q
      - press Y

Before starting the work with SuperMemo, at least one database should
be initialized (point 1).
After initialization, the learner is advised to spend always the same
amount of time with the program every day.
An exemplary 20 minutes session could look like this:
   1. load SuperMemo
   2. Open a database (created earlier by Initialize)
   3. use Learn. Continue until the end or until 20 minutes pass
   4. if there is still some time left then Expand the database
   5. Quit SuperMemo

How to make sure that nothing goes wrong?

Database safety principles:
  - always leave SuperMemo by Quit
  - keep backup copies of database files
  - don't swap floppy disks when a database is open
