          BOUNDARY CONDITIONS

For the solution of beam deflection problems, boundary condi-
tions must be prescribed. The types of homogeneous boundary
conditions that Beam Cookbook uses are as follows:

              * Free End: Such an end is free of moment (M) and shear (V).
                Therefore

                         left end V(0) = 0, V(L) = 0
                         right end M(0) = 0, M(L) = 0

              * Simple Support (roller or pinned): At the support consid-
ered no deflection v can exist. Hence at the support con-
                sidered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = 0

if located at either end of the beam then:

                         M(end) = 0

              * Guided Support (any position): In this case free vertical
movement is permitted, but rotation of the end is pre-
vented. The support is not capable of resisting shear.
Hence at the support considered located at x = a,

                         dv/dx at a = 0

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         V(end) = 0

              * Fixed Support (any position): In this case the displac e-
ment v and the slope dv/dx must vanish. Hence at the sup-
                port considered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = 0, dv/dx at a = 0

              * Hinge or Shear Connection: At the connection moment M can
exist. Hence at the located at x = a,

                         M(a) = 0

          ________________________________________________________________

              * Moment Connection: At the connection no shear V can exist.
Hence at the moment connection located at x = a,

                         V(a) = 0

          STIFFNESS/FLEXIBILITY COEFFICIENTS

              * Simple Support with Vertical Spring: At the support con-
sidered the deflection v is related to the flexibility co-
efficient Kv (distance per unit of force) and the reaction
Ra. Hence at the support considered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = - Kv Ra

              * Guided Support with Rotational Spring: In this case free
vertical movement is permitted, but the rotation of the
end is relative to the flexibility coefficient Kr (radians
per unit of moment) and the moment reaction Ma. Hence at
the support considered located at x = a,

                         dv/dx at a = Kr Ma

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         V(end) = 0

              * Fixed Support with Vertical Spring and/or Rotational
Spring: In this case the displacement v is related to the
flexibility coefficient Kv (distance per unit of force)
and the slope dv/dx is relative to the flexibility coeffi-
cient Kr (radians per unit of moment). Hence at the sup-
                port considered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = Kv Ra, dv/dx at a = Kr Ma

              * Hinge with Rotational Spring: In this case moment can be
transfered at the connection. The moment transfered is
related to the Kr and the slope discontinuity dt. Hence
at the hinge located at x = a,

                         Ma = dt Kr

              * Moment Connection with Vertical Spring: In this case shear
can be transfered at the connection. The shear transfered
is related to the Kv and the deflection discontinuity dv.
Hence at the moment connection located at x =a,

                         V(a) = dv Kr

          FORCED DEFLECTIONS/SLOPES

              * Simple Support with Forced Deflection: At the support con-
sidered the deflection is equal to the forced deflection
Fv. Hence at the support considered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = Fv

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         M(end) = 0

              * Guided Support with Forced Slope: In this case free verti-
cal movement is permitted, and rotation is equal to the
forced slope Ft. Hence at the support considered located
                at x = a,

                         dv/dx = Ft

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         V(end) = 0

              * Fixed Support with Forced Deflection and/or Forced Slope:
At the support considered the deflection is equal to the
forced deflection Fv and rotation is equal to the forced
slope Ft. Hence at the support considered located at x =
                a,

                         dv/dx at a = Ft, v(a) = Fv

          Combining stiffness/flexibility coefficients with forced
          defLection/slope

              * Simple Support with Forced Deflection and Vertical Spring:
At the support considered the deflection v is related to
the forced deflection Fv, the flexibility coefficient Kv
(distance per unit of force) and the reaction Ra. Hence at
the support considered located at x = a,

                         v(a) = - Kv Ra + Fv

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         M(end) = 0

              * Guided Support with Forced Slope and Rotational Spring: In
this case free vertical movement is permitted, but the ro-
tation of the end is relative to the forced slope Ft, the
flexibility coefficient Kr (radians per unit of moment)

and the moment reaction Ma. Hence at the support consid-
                ered located at x =a,

                         dv/dx at a = Kr Ma + Ft

If located at either end of the beam then:

                         V(end) = 0

              * Fixed Support with Forced Deflection and/or Forced Slope
and Springs: At the support considered the deflection v is
related to the forced deflection Fv, the flexibility coef-
ficient Kv (distance per unit of force) and the reaction
Ra. Also the rotation of the end is relative to the
forced slope Ft, the flexi-bility coefficient Kr (radians
per unit of moment) and the moment reaction Ma. Hence at
the support considered located at x =a,

                         dv/dx at a = Kr Ma + Ft,
                               v(a) = - Kv Ra + Fv
