  TIP:

Copy "FM.EXE" and/or "FMS.EXE" to the "COMMAND" sub-directory/folder in the
"WINDOWS" (95/98). If you have Windows 3.1 or only Dos, put it/them in the
"DOS" directory. Doing this has the effect of adding a new Dos
command/utility, which you can launch from any directory or drive.

  FM VERSION FOR WINDOWS 95/98/x:

A Windows 95/98/etc. version is available to all "donors" by request (see
"OTH-PGMS.TXT" for information about becoming a "donor"). This version has an
installer and you can launch it the same way you launch any Window's program.
Note: It also comes with an uninstaller (icon) that does a complete job.

DUPLICATING THE WINDOWS (95/98/ME/XP) TREE AS BACKUP (ex: "WIN-BU"):

If you use a Windows software tool to duplicate Windows, it will not be a
perfect duplicate because Windows changes some of it's files when it is
launched. To get a perfect duplicate of Windows, power up your computer into
Dos mode by pressing F8 before Windows gets launched, or use a Dos boot disk
with a copy of "FM.EXE" on it. Use FM to enter the "WINDOWS"
folder/directory. Use the F7-4 function. To transfer the lfns (long
filenames), you will need "Tree Restore" (doesn't need Windows). View
"OTH-PGMS.TXT" for more information about "Tree Restore".

DUPLICATING OR COMPARING A TREE SPEED:

If you are going to duplicate or compare a very large tree that contains
thousands of files, except the "WINDOWS" tree, you may notice a great speed
increase if you do it at the Dos "prompt" (Windows 95/98) or "command"
(Windows XP) instead of using Dos mode.

NUMBER OF FILES REPORT DURING "TREE" DUPLICATION OR COMPARE PROCESS:

Instead of seeing a count of each file transferred or compared, the number
of files (count) is updated after the contents of each directory is
transferred or compared.

  "FMS.EXE" vs "FM.EXE":

NOTE: "FMS.EXE (Sorted) is exactly the same as "FM.EXE" except it initially
defaults to displaying the files in alphabetical order (changeable within).
If you usually prefer to see files displayed in alphabetical order, I suggest
you rename "FM.EXE" to "FMU.EXE" (Unsorted) and "FMS.EXE" to "FM.EXE" to
reduce a keystroke.

  IMPORTANT RENAME NOTE:

If you rename a file or directory in a sorted display, the new name will be
relocated in the proper sorted position.

  SEARCH NOTE:

Search mode (via File Viewer) is disabled in Hex mode.

COMPARING A TREE OR DISK (F7-5):

You don't need access to long filenames to compare a tree or disk (files)
since all files have a short filename.

  File/s Compare Feature Notes:

The file/s compare feature's main purpose is to see that the files are
exactly the same. Therefore, there isn't an extensive difference report as
Dos's FC utility. If there is a difference, FM will report the first offset
in hexadecimal (0 based) where the difference starts, unless the end of one
file is reached before the other, in which case, FM will report that the
file's length doesn't match. If there is a mismatch ("MisMatch, first at Hex
offset...."), it is also very possible that both files can have a difference
in lengths too. NOTE: FM reads both files by 65K (or less) bytes blocks and
first compares one block length (bytes) to the other block length (bytes), if
both lengths match, FM proceeds to compare the contents (byte to byte). FM
stops at the first mismatch (block length or byte) and makes a report.

  Alt & F1 Disadvantage:

If you use Alt & F1 to copy files and keep (all) marked files marked, and
the destination runs out of space (floppy disk), all the marked files will
remain marked. You will not know which files did not get copied to the
floppy. With F1 alone, the files that where not copied will remain marked.

  File Viewer Hexadecimal Mode:

When in Hexadecimal mode, FM displays filtered ascii so you can use the
computer's Print Screen feature without any problems.
