        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

This software program was written for genealogists to simplify
their work and this 'USERWARE' method of distribution has been
        chosen for the following reasons:
The author's belief that quality software should not be expensive.
Advertising, wholesale and retail distribution costs as well as
the staff to market software is about 75% of the purchase price -
so, if these costs are minimal then the user can obtain good
        software at a low price.

This experiment is not altruism on the part of the developer but
is based on the belief that everyone is basically honest and will
be willing to pay a reasonable fee for a quality software program.
The fee enables the developer to provide user support and to
continue adding more features and enhancements.

This I B M version is the pilot in this marketing experiment.
Each user who sends in their registration fee will be casting a
vote for more software to be marketed without copy protection and
at a reasonable price. If the users fail to support us in this
marketing method then future releases and updates of FAMILY TIES
will be copy protected and the price will increase to about $150
to cover normal marketing costs - It's now in the hands of you
the user - which method do you prefer?
*********** I will be counting the registrations ************

                                 Getting started

        1. First install the program with FTINSTAL ( First time only )

        2. Run the program with
Program disc in drive A: (has CPM or PC-DOS on it)
                  Data disc in drive B:
(Using a hard disk you may have all the files on the same drive)

        3. Make sure that the default drive contains the
             Program disc with 'PRINT.CTR' file
(Check by typing DIR and see if the file is present)

        4. Type 'FT' (RETURN)
             The MAIN MENU is displayed.

        5. For the first person to be entered ONLY:

Type '2' -- blank Family Group Sheet displayed
Type 'E' -- blank Edit screen
                           Start entry of Lastname
VERY IMPORTANT - the first record
must be a MALE (sorry ladies).

After the first person has been entered then males or females may
        be entered in any order.
Parents are not entered in the EDIT mode. Use H (husb's parents)
or W (wife's parents) in the Groupsheet mode and answer Y to add.

NOTE: In this program (ESC) is used to denote the ESCAPE key
which is usually located upper left on the keyboard. (RET) or
(RETURN) is the RETURN or ENTER key which is located middle right
        of the keyboard.

                             I N T R O D U C T I O N

The FAMILY TIES Genealogy program is designed for the organized
compilation of personal genealogical information. All of the
names entered in this program are automaticaly linked to each
other. Starting with one individual (usually yourself) use the
edit mode to enter your information. Then add a person linked to
this first individual eg. parents, spouse, other spouse or child
and enter their information. You may start with any MALE person
and then ancestors or decendants may be added in any order. You
may jump around and add as you please.

Before the FAMILY TIES Genealogical Program can be used for the
first time it will have to be installed for your system. The
installation process will drastically change the files on the
diskette being installed so NEVER install your FAMILY TIES
MASTER DISKETTE. Place a write protect tab on the MASTER.
        Please do NOT remove it.

BACKING UP DISKETTES BACKING UP DISKETTES

Always make back-up copies of your programs.

Before you do anything make 2 copies of the MASTER DISKETTE and
then put the MASTER away in a safe place.

        Do this by
        1. Formating (or initializing) 2 diskettes and copying
DOS onto these disks to create system disks.

        2. Use COPYPROG.BAT to copy the files from the MASTER.
Place a formatted system disk in drive A:
Place the MASTER in drive B:
Use one of the entries below

For FLOPPY DISK drives type COPYPROG(return)
Change the destination disk when asked to do so.

For HARD DISK (C:) from FLOPPY (A:) type COPY A:*.* C:/V

[NOTE: COPY is used so that the files may be placed on a System
disk - do NOT use a diskcopy program ]

Place the ORIGINAL MASTER DISKETTE away now. This is your
insurance in case your MASTER COPY is damaged.
Label one of the copies as a MASTER COPY and place a write
protect tab on it. This will be used to create any future FAMILY
TIES databases you may need. (see MULIPLE DATABASES)

Use the second un-installed copy to create your FAMILY TIES
database. You will also need a blank formatted diskette without
DOS for storing the data in drive B:.

    PROGRAM BACK-UPS PROGRAM BACK-UPS

If you have a program that will copy whole disks then use it for
making your BACK-UPS (DISKCOPY is fine for floppies)

It is very important that frequent back-ups be made as data is
added to the database. If for any reason the data is lost (power
loss, diskette crash etc and these things will happen I promise)
then the only possible way to recover is to go back to the
previous back-up copy and re-do all entries since then. As a
rule of thumb; BACK-UPS should be made when it is too much
trouble to duplicate all the work since the last back-up. Some
will not make back-ups and Computer Services will NOT be able to
        help recover lost data.

If the program crash occurs while in EDIT or NOTES then back-ups
MUST be used as record links may be incomplete if a new
individual has just been added or the notes have just been
        started.

FAMILY TIES (c) E. Neil Wagstaff 1989 Use subject to licence agreement

One method of backing up program data is to have 3 sets of
        rotating back-ups as shown below.

Todays This is todays work - the regular
Current program & data discs used for data
        discs entry etc.

Latest These are the most recent back-ups
        back-ups (rotated from the oldest).

Intermediate These will only be used if there
back-ups is a catastrophe and the latest
                            back-ups are lost.

Oldest These are the oldest back-ups and
back-ups these diskettes will be reused to
                            back-up todays work

The program keeps track of the next back-up set to be used. If
you answer 'Y' to the back-up question when you exit FAMILY TIES
the next set # will be displayed. The 3 back-up sets should be
labeled 1,2 and 3. On one set of disc sleeves write 'LATEST BACK-
UP' and always place the latest back-up set in them so that in
the event of a crash you know which to use.

NOTE: Data is written to 4 files on the disks. These are called:
                     DBNAME.DA1 DBNAME.DA5
                     DBNAME.DA4 DBNAME.NTS

where DBNAME is the database name specified when running
FTINSTAL. These files are to be found on both the program and the
data disks and so both disks must be backed up at the same
session. If there is ever any need to use a BACK-UP then use a
PAIR of back-ups. DO NOT use back-ups from different days under
any circumstances as you will lose data.

INSTALL THE DATABASE INSTALL THE DATABASE

This process is only performed when a new pair of diskettes are
created as a FAMILY TIES database.
The copy of the uninstalled master for PC DOS contains the
        following files:

    INSTALL (continued) INSTALL

Place the copy of the un-installed master in drive A:
Place a blank formatted data disc in drive B:.
With drive A: as the default, type 'FTINSTAL' and follow the
        instructions on the screen.
(Hard disc must have copy of un-installed master and be the
default drive - sub-directories are not supported.)

After installation the following files exist, with the drive on
which the file is normally found.

NOTE: When FTINSTAL is finished you MUST get the message:
THESE DISKS ARE READY FOR USE
If you get a DISK FULL error message then there was either extra files

    PRINTER INSTALLATION PRINTER INSTALLATION

The forms (Pedigree & Family Group Sheet) are 131 characters
        across and 64 lines long.
        NOTES are 80 characters across.

This program can print two formats:

        1. Narrow 2. Wide

These each send different printer initialization codes
The Install program is used to enter these codes.
        Narrow:8 1/2 x 11 (Fgsh/Ped) Needs codes to compress 131
characters into the paper width of 8 1/2" i.e. codes for
               16 or 17 characters/inch and regular 6 lines/vertical inch.
(Notes) have only 80 characters to print on each line - enter
codes to produce the normal 10 characters/inch.

        Wide: 14 x 8 1/2 (Fgsh/Ped) 64 lines have to be entered in 8 1/2"
of paper height and so the printer needs codes for 10
              characters/inch and 8 lines/vertical inch
        (Notes) 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 high - Same as Fgsh/Ped

The program keeps track of the last 10 moves made in the database
and this command allows movement back along this path. It is
part of the jump command. After entering J for a jump the prompt
        will ask for:

Back or label # or groupsheet record # and RETURN

Entering a 'B' will cause a jump to the previous position; ie the
        last move is cancelled.

    B.I.C. [LDS] B.I.C.

This is an abbreviation for 'Born in the Covenant' and
refers to the L.D.S. church's temple ordinances. B.I.C. can only
be entered in the edit mode of a Family Group Sheet . The
section 'sealed to parents' has the option of a date, a 9 digit
temple code or B.I.C. To enter B.I.C. press the letter 'B'. This
will automatically print the word B.I.C.

    BAPTISED [LDS] BAPTISED

This is used in the Family Group Sheet and edit modes and appears
only in the L.D.S. version (the regular version is blank).
L.D.S. baptisms can be entered in one of two ways.
a:-in the form dd Mon yyyyc (where 'c' is an identifying
                code-see CODES)
b:-using the word 'Infant' for children who died before the
                age of 8 (see Infant).

    Child Child

Child is a command code used in both the pedigree and Family
Group Sheet. It has a different function in each mode.
             a. Pedigree - Moves the eldest child of the base individual
                 to the base position.
             b. Family Group Sheet - children are displayed with a
letter code to the left of their name. To display the
Family Group Sheet of a particular child type C followed
by the identifying letter of that child.

Use the + option to add a child. Type a + and then the
letter position at which the child is to be added. For example
if there are 2 children entered (A & B) and the next child to be
added comes between A and B then type C ( to access child ) and
then +B to insert this child's record between children A and
        B. The child who was at B is moved to position C. To add a
child at the end of the list type + and then the next letter.

Use the - option to remove a child's record. Only children
who do NOT have a spouse may be removed. First goto the child's
FGS and edit the data. Blank out the LASTNAME with the space bar
& return to the parents record. Enter a - and the child's letter.

    CODES CODES

There are two types of codes. One type of code is found at the
end of each date. When a date is entered as dd Mon yyyyc the
space 'c'is used for an explanation code. There are 9 user
definable date codes a,b,c,........i. This means the user can
define the source for their dates e.g. TBI or family bible or
Aunt Minnie has these records. There are also 5 predefined date
        identification codes:-

        *    Confirmed (Have documentation)
& More than one date (see notes)
+ See notes for more information
        ? Doubtful date
             (BLANK) date probably correct

The user definable codes (a,b, .... i) are defined by running
        FTINSTAL.

The other type of code deals with L.D.S. temple information. All
information on this can be found under the 'SEALED' heading.

    COMMAND COMMAND

The command line usually appears at the bottom of the screen to
allow movement to a different section of the program. The cursor
draws attention to the command line and waits for a single key
press; eg. press H for husband's parents. An explanation of each
command will be found under its appropriate heading.
        The commands used are:-

        1 The FAMILY GROUP SHEET.

    CURSOR MOVEMENT CURSOR MOVEMENT

In Search, Edit and Notes modes it is possible to move the cursor
over characters for editing purposes and the cursor control keys
appear on the bottom line. The DEL and Backspace keys on most
computers have also been implemented for cursor movement to the
left. Some computers will halt on a ctrl S and so these other
        keys should be used.

These can only be entered in the form dd Mon yyyyc. If the
day or month is not known use blanks (space bar). The "1" in
the year is automatically inserted but if you wish you may
backspace and blank out the 1.
There is space for a description code 'c' to the right of
the date for additional clarification of your records. The
meaning of the symbols are defined when installing your program
initially (see CODES). There are 14 different codes.
The computer will help the user avoid some mistakes. It
will not allow a number larger than 31 for the day (29 for
February). It will also help with the months. e.g. Type 'F'
for February and it will automatically add 'eb 1', or type 'A'
then it will wait for the second letter (p or u) before it adds
the third (r or g) for Apr or Aug.

The L.D.S. endowments and sealings have 2 spaces to the right of
the date for the temple letter codes where needed (see SEALED).
This line is blank in the regular version.

Any field in a record may be deleted by pressing the space bar in
the field. A CHILD record without a spouse can also be deleted -
        1) blank the child's LASTNAME. 2) delete from the parents record.

To enter or alter any information found on the Family Group
Sheet use the Edit mode. This is the only way to enter any
data into the records. After pressing E for Edit, the next
        question is:
             Edit (M)ale/(H)usband or (F)emale/(W)ife

This question only appears if there is a spouse in the FGS. Any
of the letters in parenthesis may be used.

The SEX of the record being edited is displayed at the bottom
        right of the edit screen.

In the EDIT mode, for clarity, each portion of the record is
highlighted (inverse) when it is being changed or reviewed (if
your terminal has inverse). For example, if you are looking at

VERY CAREFULLY as incorrect entries cannot be removed from the
database and valuable storage space will be wasted. Each name
and place is stored only once in the database. With names please
use the three separate lines up to 3 first names. If there are
more first names then place the extras on the 3rd line with a
space between them. You may also use the other first name lines
in this manner, but be aware that each line is treated as a whole
        when doing a name search.
Information can be entered in the edit mode in both the

FAMILY GROUP SHEET FAMILY GROUP SHEET

There are two kinds of Family Group Sheets. There is a regular
Family Group Sheet and an L.D.S. version (which shows ordinance
dates and temple codes). Samples of both the regular and LDS
Family Group Sheet can be seen in the 'demo'. The 'demo' is a
tutorial demonstration of the Family Ties program.
The Family Group Sheet has several command codes displayed at
the bottom of the screen. Only the first letter of the command
code is typed ( except exit which uses 'X' ). An explanation
of each code will be found under the appropriate heading.
To enter or alter any information found on the Family Group Sheet
you use the EDIT mode which is the only way to modify any
        data in your records.

'BAPTIZED' and 'ENDOWED' have an option of 'Infant'.
To enter the word Infant (which can only be entered in the
edit mode under the heading BAPTIZED) enter the letter 'I'. This
will automatically bring up the word Infant.

    JUMP JUMP

This is a single key press command to goto
        1. the previous record (Back)
        2. any record that has been previously labeled -(see LABEL).
        3. a Family Group Sheet whose record number is known. This
number is found on the line between the husband and wife data or
on the Family Group Sheet printouts in the top righthand section.

    L.D.S. L.D.S.

This is an abbreviation for The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latterday Saints (otherwise known as the Mormons).
The Family Ties program has the option of entering all the data
in either the regular or LDS version (which shows the sealings,
baptisms, endowments and temple dates and codes that are of great
interest to Latter Day Saints). LDS printouts do not show the
place of death of the children or their record number. This
space is used to print the LDS ordinance data.

    LABEL LABEL

This is found on the command line on both the pedigree and Family
Group Sheet screens. There are 10 labels (0-9) that can be
attached to any base record by a single key press (L). The
        command line will say:-
Enter label number to be assigned to this record (0-9, 0=startup record)
Once a record has been labeled then the label number can be used
to (J)ump to that labeled record. This is very useful if you
need to return to a record after moving off on a branch of the
        family.
Label 0 is used to mark the record at which the program will
start when FT is typed. These labels can be changed at any time
and will be saved when exiting the program.

    LAST UPDATE LAST UPDATE

This is found in the Family Group Sheet on both the screen and
the printout. It is the date (entered by the user at the start
of the day's work) that this record was last edited.
It is thus important to enter the date when starting each days
work. (IBM uses the system date)

This is an abbreviation for mother and is found only in the
pedigree. Pressing 'M' (a single key press ) will change the
pedigree to put the mother of the person in position 1 into

    MULTIPLE DATABASES MULTIPLE DATABASES

If there are more individuals in the family than will fit in one
database ( size depends on disc capacity ) then the family can
be divided into different branches and another database created
and given a different name to indicate the family branch. This
decision should be made before starting as an existing database
cannot be split into two and, once a record is added, it cannot
be deleted from the linkage chain.
On the Family Group Sheet of the link person (those who
overlap each database) a comment could be placed in the NOTES to
indicate the Record # and Database name where the individual is
also located. The Jump command provides a fast method to find
the record in the other family database.
Two discs will contain the newly created data base and must
always be kept in pairs. Please label each disc very carefully
        to avoid mix-ups.

    NAMES NAMES

Names are only entered in the edit mode. Each part of a name can
be up to 63 characters long e.g. each lastname (surname) and each
first, second and third+ names can be up to 63 characters long.
This allows for a wide variety of names. If there are more than
three first (christian) names the extra names can be added to the
third name line separated by spaces.
If the last name has a special suffix such as Junior (Jr), Snr,
1, 11, 111 etc. put a + immediately after the last name followed
        by the suffix (no spaces).
        e.g. PUBLIC+Jr.

Please use the prompt to check spelling, as errors will use up
valuable space in the database. You can re-enter the name
correctly but the error will still remain in the Names file.
Displayed at the right hand side of the edit screen is the
reference number associated with each name. If you wish you may
type in this number and the name will be entered without spelling
        errors.

    NOTES NOTES

Provision is made for free form notes to be associated with any
Family Group Sheet. Any part of these notes can be added to,
erased or changed. When a Family Group Sheet that has notes
associated with it is printed the command line will read:-
Do you wish to print the notes (Y/N)

Please be advised that a word processing program MUST NOT be used
on the NOTES of this program. If you wish to make extensive
notes such as a history or biography it is suggested that these
be in a separate program where a word processor can be used.

Each database is limited to an total of 32766 lines so Notes
should be used with care. Once lines are added to a Family Group
Sheet then the 80 characters/line are always tied to the Family
Group Sheet even if the lines are blanked out.

    NXTSIB NXTSIB

This is used in the pedigree to change the base record (position
        1) from that person to his/her next sibling according to the
order that these siblings are entered on their parent's Family
Group Sheet. Successive key pressing of N will page through the
children one at a time to the youngest and then back to the
        eldest.

This means other spouse and is used in the pedigree to change the
spouse of the person in the base record providing that another
spouse has been entered in the records.

This is used in the Family Group Sheet only to access the
information of or to ADD other (H)usbands or (W)ives. When the O
(other) is pressed the command line will say:-

An H or W will show the list of spouses with an identifying

to be displayed. Use the + option to add another spouse.
Enter + and the letter of the position in which you wish to add

    PEDIGREE PEDIGREE

Pressing 1 (for pedigree) will show four generations of the
family on the screen and, by pressing P(for (P)rint) the same
Pedigree Chart (five generations) will be produced on the printer.
A sample of a pedigree chart can be found in the 'demo' which is
a tutorial of the functions of the Family Ties program.
To simplify movement around the pedigree chart the symbols or
command codes are displayed at the bottom of the screen. For an
explanation of each command code see the appropriate heading.

    PLACES PLACES

Provision is made to enter the full place name (town, county,
state or country). If the place name is too long to fit in some
displays the computer will ask for an abbreviation which may be
used in other displays when it is warranted.
Max no of characters Abreviation length
        Town 42 12

        State 25 4
In nearly every case the full place name will be used in the
Family Group Sheet and even if the abreviation is used on the
screen the full place names will be used in the printouts if at
all possible. When the town is typed in, the computer checks to
see if that name has been previously entered. If it is there,
then the full town, county and state are displayed below with a
letter code. Every town previously entered in the database with
different County/States will be displayed. Enter the letter code
of the town needed or if this is a different town then use the +
option to enter new county/state data.
The town is displayed with a 5 digit reference number in the
right margin. The first time a Place is entered the county and
state/country will be requested. Please use care as typing
errors cannot be changed once the spelling has been verified (you
can get out with ESC at any time before this)
The reference number can be typed in place of the town name.
This is the fastest way to enter towns.

To DELETE a PLACE you have to start on the town and erase the
characters with the space bar, press return and then repeat for
County and State characters - answer Y to new town question.
To ADD only a county and/or state use a . (period) as the town -
if you have a lot then use 12 with 1 period, 12 with 2 periods etc.

This is a command line key press to make a hard copy of any
Family Group Sheet or Pedigree shown on the screen. If it is
necessary to change the printer modes then this can be done by

    RECORD # RECORD #

Each individual whose statistics are entered in the computer
using the edit mode is assigned a record number. This number is
displayed on the screen in the Family Group Sheet and can be
found under the word HUSBAND for the husband's number and the
wife's number is found under the word WIFE.

In the printouts of the regular Family Group Sheet the record
number of each child can be found in the right-hand column.
The record numbers start at 17 for programming reasons.

    REGULAR REGULAR

The Family Ties program, in the regular version, does not
implement the LDS ordinance dates. The choice between REGULAR
and LDS versions of the program is made while installing the
program. The option is also available to enter LDS information
into the computer but not print it.

    RE-INSTALL RE-INSTALL

Any of the following installed parameters may be changed by RE-
        INSTALLING the database.

        Preparer's address and telephone number
Computer attributes (name and # back-up discs)
Drive locations of the various files
Printers for Narrow or Wide format
        Date clarification codes
        Regular or LDS database
        IF LDS then Temple codes

To re-install the database first make a current back-up in case
of an error. Then place a copy of the uninstall MASTER (you
should have it write protected) in the default drive (B:) and the
program disc in A:.(files are probably on C: if hard disc.)

'PRINT.CTR', 'FGRSH.INS' and 'FTCOLOR.DAT' are the files which
will be changed by FTINSTAL. (these are on the program disk)
Type 'FTINSTAL' and select 'B' on the first MENU.

What to do IF: What to do IF:

        1. There is a marriage between two people already entered in
        separate places in the database.

Because the spouse link is required before children (decendants)
can be added it will be necessary to duplicate one of the
spouse's records but do not duplicate the rest of this spouse's
ancestry. Place an explanation in the notes indicating where the
ancestral branch is located (eg FGS rec #).
Version 1.20 due for release in November 1989 will allow these
extra records to be deleted and the correct links established.

        2. A record is created for a spouse who does not exist.
Blank out all the fields while in edit mode and when the DELETE
a SPOUSE is available (version 1.20) you may remove this record.

        3. You misspell a NAME or PLACE and do not catch the error when
* asked to check spelling. The file FIX-NAME.EXE will remove all *
unused NAMES and re-index the database.
REGISTERED users get this file on their master copy.

    APPENDIX B APPENDIX B

TOO MANY FILES ERROR:

If you are running memory resident programs such as SIDEKICK
then this error may occur while running FAMILY TIES. DOS
requires a 39 byte space in memory for a FILE CONTROL BLOCK (FCB)
for each file that is opened. The default number is 8 but DOS
uses 5 of these for routine input & output which leaves only 3
for programs. However there is a way to increase the number of
FCBs available. In addition to the FCB there is also memory
set aside for storing the data from the files (buffers) and by
increasing the number of buffers, programs like FAMILY TIES can
be made to run faster. (each buffer uses 528 bytes of memory)

To configure your DOS to have more FCBs and buffers requires a
special file to be on the BOOT disk(s) called CONFIG.SYS.
If the file already exists then you should edit it to add the
FILES and BUFFERS lines as shown below or this file can be
        created using the COPY command:

        A>COPY CON: CONFIG.SYS(ret)
        FILES=25(ret)
        BUFFERS=20(ret)
        (F6 key)
        (ret)

These parameters will use 11223 bytes (a little over 10K) of
your memory but will be worth it.

When DOS is booted it will look for CONFIG.SYS and modify itself
to the new parameters. This is automatic and has nothing to do
with any AUTOEXEC.BAT file you may have.

PC Jr users: Since you are limited to 128K of memory and about
16 K of that is used for screen controls you cannot
have as many BUFFERS so you should omit the BUFFERS= line and
this will leave the default at 2 buffers.

These modification will NOT work for DOS 1.??. THis means you
cannot run other programs along with FAMILY TIES.

* This error 'Too many files' will also occur in FTINSTAL if you *
fail to enter a database name when asked to do so. Do not just
press <RETURN> - enter a family name to identify the datafiles.

* DOS ver 3.20 was full of bugs and if you experience this error *
after you have tried the above fixes the you may need a new copy
        of DOS

    APPENDIX C APPENDIX C

*   FIX-NAME.EXE                                                 FIX-NAME.EXE *

This file is used to remove unused names from the NAMES (.DA4)
file and to optionally increase or decrease the number of name
slots in the .DA4 file. It will also optionally re-index the
LASTNAMES in the database for when the SEARCH fails to find an
individual you know is in the database or a name repeats.

Please be sure to make BACK-UPS of your database BEFORE running
        FIX-NAME.EXE.

The program is self documenting and will ask you for the database
name you are using and where the files are located (.DA1 and .DA4)
If you are using a floppy system you may wish to copy these 2 files
to a blank disk and then run FIX-NAME, as a duplicate file of your
.DA4 file is created and needs diskspace.

        ===============WARNING!==ADVERTISEMENT=BELOW======================

FAMILY TIES version 1.20 is due for release in November 1989

Some of the new features it will have are:

CHILD and SPOUSE: Delete, Change order, Change Sex, Delink, Re-link
Purge unused entries (errors) from the Names and Place files.
Re-index the database for the Search routine

New forms of output will include:
          Descendants Chart
Descendants and Ancestors described in English words (story form)
Dynamic Ancestor Chart (can have ancestor siblings)
Record contents listing in First Name, LAST Name or Record # order
          Name & Place file listings
Anniversary listings (events that occur on a given day of the year)
Chronology listings (events listed in date order)
          Events listed in Place order
Names distribution - shows who is using which names
LDS ordinances listing (also missing ordinances)

All of the forms can have just as much information about a person
as you wish - from only the LASTNAME to everything about them and
their relatives. The output can be displayed on the screen, sent
to the printer or saved to a file on the disk

REGISTERED USERS will be able to use their existing data with
version 1.20 but the FREEWARE VERSION will not work with the data
from prior versions - all data will have to be re-entered. Also,
the freeware version will only print 4 generations on the new
Ancestor and Descendant charts whereas the registered user can
include up to 99 generations in these charts. Now would be a good
time to send in that registration form and become a legitimate user
        of FAMILY TIES.
These minor restrictions still allow the software to be fully tested
but still gives the user an incentive to register.
