The Adobe Corporation designed PostScript to be a page description
language for it's Apple LaserWriter printer. Becoming a defacto
standard, PostScript is now supported by a number of other printer
manufacturers.

The PostScript language describes such things as fonts and graphics
images for printing. To see a PostScript file, you need to have access
to a PostScript compatible piece of software, and a PostScript
compatible printer. If you don't, you can't see the publication!

Many electronic publications are disseminated in PostScript format and
thus cannot be displayed within this system (which isn't PostScript
compatible!).
