     1. Introduction

NHLBAZA is a computer program which allow you to make your database
of NHL scores.
Program works on PC-computers in the environment of the MS-DOS.
Its requires on hardware are very low, a standard 5-years old computer
is sufficient.
You can install Program from the distribution source by copying
complete directory NHLBAZA with all subdirectories and files. Do not
change the names of directories !
By the same way you can occasionally archive Database.
Before running Program you must set the current directory NHLBAZA.
If you run Program with Parameter "e" ( it means "nhlbaza e") so
Program works in "European mode" (date and scores are in such format
which is usual in the Europe).

- 03 -
     2. How to work

Program helps users in each situations by helps.
Error messages apear in a window in the middle of the screen for
three seconds together with a short sound.
Program's questions look similarly, but they wait for your answer
either (Y) for Yes or (N) for No ( or other keys in several
extraordinary cases ).
Using of keys tries to keep a conventional system. Exactly as you
are accustomed to, the key (Enter) means entering somewhere or closing
of editing and so on, the key (Esc) means "to escape", coming back
without accepting changes ("exit but not save") etc.
Closing of program's functions accepting changes ( "exit and save")
is made possible by the key (F10).
Also using of the keys (Up) and (Down) to move cursor or roll the
screen and keys (PgUp) and (PgDn) to switch data are conventional.
Some other keys have different functions in different circumstances
explained in this guide and reminded by helps.
After finishing the information screen ( after 5 seconds ), the
window "Selection of season" appears.

- 04 -
     3. Selection of season

There is the list of seasons in the window. At the beginning
Database includes (all scores of) the seasons from 1993/1994 till now.
The key (F2) creates a new season. At creating Program offers you
in the window e.g.
     New season : 1999/2000
( it depends on the system's date of your computer ) but you can change
the season by the keys (Up) and (Down) to the "future" or to the "past".
( Program has been tested on Y2K, it should work after 1999 without any
problem. ) You confirm the selected year by (Enter).
The key (Delete) removes a selected season. If the database of the
removed season includes play-offs, at first Program asks you whether you
wish to remove play-offs and only after its removing Program wants you
to confirm removing of regular season ( It is not possible to remove
regular season and let play-offs be ). Use carefully, undeleting is not
possible !
The key (L) calls "Long-time menu".
The key (G) calls this guide. ( If it is called on a function of
"Main menu" or "Long-time" menu, the guide opens itself on the page
which belongs to that function. )
The key (Enter) confirm selected season and you go to "Main menu".

- 05 -
     4. Main menu

Main menu offers you eight functions. On your screen you can see
           Ŀ
            New scores
            Correct scores
            Scoreboard (days)
            Scores of selected team
            Standings
            Special standings
            List of teams
            Enter play-offs (Stanley Cup)

If play-offs of that year has been based, so Program automatically
enter play-offs ( it is signalled by short sound ) and the last function
in this case is "Enter regular season".
You can select a function either by arrows and (Enter) or by "hot
keys", i.e. by hitting the key of the emphasized letter.

- 06 -
     4. a) New scores

Program learns which days has been put and offer you to put scores
of the next day. This date you can change, but only to the "future".
( If you want to put "older" scores than some of before put scores are,
use function "Correct scores". )
To each game you must put these data :
     - name of the road-team
     - name of the home-team
     - score
Selecting of teams is very simply, for example :
You hit the key (A) ( it is not case sensitive ! ). If you work at
the season 1998/1999, Program immediately types "Anaheim Mighty Ducks",
because it is just one beginning by the letter "A". But at the season
1999/2000, Program type only "A" and waits for the second letter either
(N) for Anaheim or (T) for "Atlanta Thrashers".
A little discomfortable thing is only putting "New York Rangers"
and "New York Islanders", because you must type 4 letters : (N) (Program
selects 4 teams), (E) (leaves Nashville and types "New "), (Y) (leaves
New Jersey and types "New York ") and either "R" or "I". ( But if You
cannot stand it, You can rename them on "Rangers" and "Islanders" and
then one letter would be sufficient. )
( to be continued on the next page )

- 07 -
( New scores - the second part )

Program does not allow to leave "the tree of possibilities".
Program also does not allow to select the certain team for more
than one game at the day.
For putting the score you need use only numeric keys and the key
(Tab) to put "ten" ( e.g. if the score is 10 - 1 hit three keys : (Tab),
(0), (1) ).
If a difference is just one goal, Program gives you a question
"Y / N ?" Possitive answer means that a game includes an overtime, so
Program types "OT". If it is a tie, Program types "OT" automatically
( NHL allows a tie only after an overtime ).
The key (Delete) deletes a line so it returns you to putting the
road-team.
The key (F1) shows the list of teams to help you.
The key (F10) instead of the first letter of the road-team closes
"New scores" with saving and Program goes into the function "Correct
scores".
The key (Esc) closes "New scores" without saving !

- 08 -
     4. b) Correct scores

At first specify day of the scores which you want to correct ( or
add scores, or delete scores, or type notes to scores ). Program lets
you enter only the date not after the last day put in "New scores".
When scores of the specified day appear you can choose any score by
the keys (Up) and (Down). Then you can applicate one of three keys :
(Delete), (N) or (Enter).
The key (Delete) deletes complete game's line.
After hitting the key (N) Program lets you to edit a short note
( 70 letters at most ) belonging to the selected game, it means either
to write a new one or overwrite an old one. Editing is closed by
(Enter). The key (Esc) closes editing without saving.
If you use (Enter) on the line which contains teams, Program
deletes the score and let you to put it by numeric keys and (Tab).
The key (F2) adds a new game by the same way as in "New scores".
The key (F10) closes "Correct scores" with saving.
The key (Esc) closes "Correct scores" without saving.

- 09 -
     4. c) Scoreboard (days)

At first Program displays games of the first day. Using the key
(PgDn) you can switch to next days. You can move backwards by the key
(PgUp). The key (End) moves you to the last put day, the key (Home) to
the first day again.
The character (*) on the beginning of the game line means that this
game owns a note. When you want to read that note, hit (N) and then type
the date of game and confirm it by (Enter). After having read a note
( it displays in the first line of the screen ) hit any key.
The key (P) lets you to output scores of the displayed day.
Program makes an output ( not only in the function "Scoreboard
(days)" in this way : Program offers you two possibilities :
     - the key (P) --> output on the printer
     - the key (F) --> output to the file
In the second case Program asks you to hit either the key (A) or
the key (O). The key (A) means that you wish to add to an old content of
the output file, the key (O) means you wish to overwrite the output
file. The output file is the file called output.txt which is in the
directory NHLBAZA.
The key (Esc) closes "Scoreboard (days)".

- 10 -
     4. d) Scores of selected team

At first you can select the division and the team. Then program
displays the first ten games ( or fewer if there are fewer than 10 games
put ). On next games you can move by arrows. Put notes presents by the
same way as in the previous function.
The key (H) switches on the games played home.
The key (R) switches on the games played road.
The key (X) switches on the all games displayed in the specific
form where games are watched from the side of the selected team to be
very easy to survey.
The key (A) switches again on the all games in the usual format.
The key (T) calls outputting of the displayed ten games. The key
(P) calls outputting of all games of the team.
The key (Esc) returns you to selecting the team, then to selecting
the division and the third (Esc) closes the function.

- 11 -
     4. e) Standings

At first you are asked from which day you wish to calculate
standing. If you hit (Enter), standing will be calculated from the first
day till the last put day. If you specify a date and confirm by (Enter),
standing will be calculated from the specified date till the last day.
When you select one possibility of the list of divisions,
conferences or "Whole NHL", Program displays a standing.
Using the keys (PgUp), (PgDn), (Home), (End) you can change the
last calculated day. So Program can display standing of any part of
competition !
The key (H) switches on the standing of the games played home.
The key (R) switches on the standing of the games played road.
The key (A) switches on the standing of the all games again.
The key (N) switches on the standing of the games without
overtimes, it means all overtimes games are calculated as a tie.
The key (O) switches on the games with overtimes again.
The order of standing depends at first on the number of points and
then a difference between put and received goals.

( To be continued on the next page )

- 12 -
     ( Standings - the second part )

The key (P) calls outputting of the displayed standing. A standing
of the all games is outputting in the wider form : after standard
columns ( the number of matches, wins, ties, losses, the score, the
number of points ) are added six columns more : the number of home wins,
home ties, home losses, road wins, road ties and road losses.
The key (Esc) returns on the list of divisions ( conferences and
"Whole NHL" ), next using closes the function.

     4. f) Special standings

Special standings offers you two functions. On the bottom left part
of your screen you can see
           Ŀ
            Series of scores in symbols
            Series of positions

- 13 -
     4. f1) Series of scores in symbols

At first you are asked to specify the period of time : from date
and till date.
Program displays series of scores of all teams in accordance with
these rules :
The order of teams is in accordance with final standing of the NHL.
Each score is expressed by two or three characters : the first is
either "h" as home or "r" as road. The second character is "1", "X" or
"2" and it means win, tie or loss. Overtimes games have the third
character and it is "*".
The key (P) calls outputting of series. The output is not so
limited in extent, that's why if series includes more than 17 scores,
Program displays only the last 17 its scores, but the output includes
the whole series.
The key (Esc) closes the function.

- 14 -
     4. f2) Series of positions

Program displays series of positions of all teams in the standing
of the NHL allways after three days.
The order of teams is in accordance with final standing.
The key (P) calls outputting of series. The output is not so
limited in extent, that's why if series includes more than 17 numbers,
Program displays only the last 17 its numbers, but the output includes
the whole series.
The key (Esc) closes the function.

- 15 -
     4. g) List of teams

If you want to base the list of teams of a new season, Program
copies the previous season's list a offers you to correct it. ( Only if
the previous season's list does not exit, Program will ask you to type
every names of conferences, divisions and teams. )
     You can correct :
     - numbers of teams in divisions
Hit (D), select the division by arrows, hit (N), type the number
and confirm by (Enter).
     - names of conferences
     - names of divisions
     - names of teams
Hit (C) ( (D) or (T) ), select the object, hit (Enter), edit and
confirm by (Enter).
You can use this function whenever, even after putting all scores.
But you must realize that if you exchange two teams ( e.g. you overwrite
"Boston Bruins" to "Buffalo Sabres" and Buffalo to Boston ) so these
teams will exchange their scores !
The key (F10) closes function with saving.
The key (Esc) closes function without saving !

- 16 -
     4. h) Enter play-offs (Stanley Cup)

When you enter this function the first time in the season, you will
base a separated part of Database of the season for scores of the
play-offs. Program copies the list of teams from the regular season.
Working in the play-offs is exactly the same as in the regular
season.

     4. h1) Enter regular season

This function substitutes the function "Enter play-offs (Stanley
Cup)" in the situation when you are in play-offs. It can lead you to
regular season.
Realize, that if play-offs of the season has been based Program
goes to play-offs at first. ( If you based play-offs premature, you
could delete it by the way described in "Selection of season". Use
carefully ! )

- 17 -
     5. Long-time menu

Long-time menu ( after the key (L) in the level of Selection of
season ) offers you four functions. On your screen you can see
           Ŀ
            Long-time standing
All put games of two teams
            Final standings' positions
            Rename team

These function are "long-time" because they do not belong to one
season. They work in the whole "history" of your Database.
You can select a function either by arrows and (Enter) or by "hot
keys", i.e. by hitting the key of the emphasized letter.

- 18 -
     5. a) Long-time standing

At first you are asked to specify a period, it means which seasons
will be included in the standing : "from season" ( select by arrows and
confirm (Enter) ) and "till season".
Then you can see the league's standing of specified period. Of
course, it is calculated from scores of regular seasons only.
At first you can see the first ten teams in the order. Use arrows
to see others.
The key (H) switches on the standing of "home" games.
The key (R) switches on the standing of "road" games.
The key (A) switches on the standing of all games again.
The key (P) calls outputting of the whole standing.
The key (Esc) closes the function.

- 19 -
     5. b) All put games of two teams

Select the teams by arrows ( they are all teams from your Database
in the alphabetical order ) and confirm by (Enter).
Program finds all mutual games of the selected teams. At first you
can see the first ten matches ( or all if their number is fewer ). Use
arrows to see others.
At the beginning of the games line you can see date and season
which is the game from. If the game belongs to play-offs, it is marked
by the letters "po" ( behind the season ).
The key (H) switches on home games of the first selected team.
The key (R) switches on road games of the first selected team.
The key (P) calls outputting of all scores.
The key (Esc) returns you to selecting the second team, then to
selecting the first team and at last it closes the function.

- 20 -
     5. c) Final standings' positions

Selection of the team is the same as in the previous function.
Program calculates standings of all single regular seasons and
finds final data of the selected team, it means the order in the Table,
the number of games, wins, ties, losses, its score, the number of
points, the number of home wins, home ties, home losses and the number
of road wins, road ties, road losses.
At first you can see the first ten seasons ( or all if their number
is fewer ). Use arrows to see others.
     The key (P) calls outputting.
The key (Esc) returns you to selecting the team and next use of the
key (Esc) closes the function.

- 21 -
     5. d) Rename team

Selection of the team is the same as in the previous function.
Then you edit a new team's name.
Program renames the selected team in all single seasons !

- 22 -
     6. How does Demo differ

Database of the Demo-version includes all seasons which are offered
in the Full-version ( from 1993/1994 till now ) but scores from October
of regular seasons and April of play-offs only !
You can put next scores of these seasons or next seasons which you
will base ( either new one or older than 1993/1994 ) but only till the
15-th of November in regular seasons and till the 15-th of May in
play-offs. Program refuses to take scores after the limit date !
The Full-version is allowed to use only for a person ( his / her
name appears in the line "User" after Program begins to run ) who bought
the licence from the author !
The Demo-version is free for any user and free for copying !
