THE Y2K PROBLEM:

Every PC's motherboard includes a battery-powered real-time clock (RTC). When your PC is turned off, the time and date are continually updated. The next time you use your PC, the time and date are moved from the RTC to your PC ROM BIOS chip. This information is used by your operating system and application programs.

PCs manufactured before 1997 do not increment the century byte. These systems aren't Y2K ready. The date will change to 1900-01-01 on January 1, 2000. This date is invalid so the operating system changes it to the first year that it's capable of handling.

If the problem is ignored, it can cause some major application software errors.
