THE KNOWLEDGE TREE (c)1997 v1.0
-------------------------------

Welcome to the Knowledge Tree (hereafter abbreviated TOK for Tree of
Knowledge). TOK is a text file utility that allows one store a large
number of text files (snipetts that are called VEINS hereafter) in an
organized and hierarchial environment for easy retrieval and viewing.
It has any number of uses, including backing up system files like
autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini etc., organizing personal documents,
and storing any ASCII text file in a unified and intuitive environ-
ment with a "TREE" structure similar to a DOS directory tree. TOK is
compact enough to be run from a floppy disk for additional file pro-
tection.

This version of the Tree of Knowledge is Freeware. You can possess and
use it at no charge. There is also an enhanced version of the program
available which includes added print functionality, the ability
to create multiple trees and to selective prune the tree file, mouse
support, and a startup splash screen customized with Your Name and a witty
saying of your choice, available from the author for $10 US + $2 S/H
($5 S/H if outside U.S.). The program is supplied on a 1.4M HD 3.5" floppy
diskette.

    Please e-mail:
            photonuv@kudos.net
    if interested for further details.

This release of the Tree of Knowledge is freely distributable.

FILES INCLUDED IN THIS RELEASE:
-------------------------------

tok.exe (the executable program)
readme.txt (this information file).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
---------------------

IBM Compatible 386 or better (co-processor NOT required)
(TOK might run on a lesser machine, but hasn't been tested on one.)

INSTALLATION:
-------------

Just unzip the compressed distribution file and copy the two
files contained therein to a directory (folder) of your own
choosing. No other special configuration is required.

KNOWN LIMITATIONS & ISSUES:
---------------------------

TOK will only import text files 500 lines (about 38Kb) or smaller.
It will actually perform an import on larger files, but they will be
truncated after the 499th line.

TOK only displays ASCII text (correctly). If you import files that are
formatted for specific word processors (e.g. Word) you will see garbage
when you try and view them, if they even display at all...

If the files you import contain the (non-printable) ACSII characters
Ascii 2 or Ascii 4 (the little diamond or little heart) TOK will become
confused and not edit/display/export them correctly. If you run into
anomalous & unfathomable behaviors, this may be a possible culprit.

If you run TOK under Win95, please make sure that the
"Properties / Program / Advanced / Prevent MS-DOS based programs from
recognizing Windows" check box is NOT selected.

Please e-mail the author at the above address with any comments, bug
reports, questions, or other germane feedback.

USING THE PROGRAM:
------------------

Use of TOK is straight-foreward. All commands are entered from the
keyboard by entering an appropriate character or text string. The
command keys appear in angle brackets on the menus (e.g. to use the
menu command <Q>uit you hit the 'Q' key). The single character com-
mands are not case sensitive, so either 'q' or 'Q' will initiate
the <Q>uit command.

You can import ASCII text files into TOK's database from other
locations on your computer, or you can create new VEINs with TOK's
integral editor. When you import an external file, TOK automatically
word-wraps the text somewhere around the 76th column, so you should
not lose any information even if the import file is "Way Wide". There
is, however, a length limitation on the amount of text TOK will import.
If the import file is longer than 499 lines (about 38K i think), the
file will be imported BUT it will be TRUNCATED at line 499, with a
note to that effect appended to the end of the VEIN. If you really have
to import larger files, you'll have to Slice-n-Dice them first into
smaller files with some other editor, as TOK is not that talented.
Maybe in a future release...

Any names that TOK requires from the user are limited to 20 char-
acters in length and may include any keyboard alphanumeric character
or symbol character (e.g. "#1_@Any Name" is fine, but cannot be over
20 characters long, including spaces). If TOK requires a PATH and
File Name (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTEM.INI) the entire string is
limited to 64 characters in length. BRANCH, TWIG, LEAF and VEIN mames
that you enter will thereafter be CASE SENSITIVE, and must be provided,
when required, with appropriate capitalization. For example, if you
create a branch called "Misc" and then use "misc" to try and access it,
TOK will not find it, and you will get an error message and/or beep.

A NOTE ABOUT NAMING BRANCHES, TWIGS, LEAVES, & VEINS:

TOK will happily let you name every single one of the above structures
you create with the SAME NAME. However, this is NOT a very good idea,
as TOK stops searching for a name upon finding the first instance of
that name. Therefore, you will "lock yourself out" of all access to
objects associated with the 2nd..3rd..Nth instance of an identical
name. The solution to this is simple. Always use unique names. And again
please note that MyFile, Myfile, and myfile are all different names.

THE TOK MENUS & MENU COMMANDS:
------------------------------

				<C>reate

The <C>reate menu is accessed by pressing the 'C' key from the main
screen. The available menu commands are:

New <B>ranch [create up to 8 MAIN BRANCHES on the tree]
New <T>wig [create up to 8 TWIGS on each BRANCH]
New <L>eaf [create up to 8 LEAVES on each TWIG]
New <V>ein [create up to 100 VEINS on each LEAF]
<C>ancel [back out of the Create Menu]

Therefore TOK will hold a maximum of 8*8*8*1000 = 51200 different
VEINS (text snipetts)!

NOTE: You must create at least one BRANCH-TWIG-LEAF structure before you
can enter any VEINS, since the VEIN text snipetts are assigned to the
LEAVES which are assigned to the TWIGS which are assigned to BRANCHES.

				<E>dit

The <E>dit menu is accessed by pressing the 'E' key from the main

                        *** DISCLAIMER ***
If your computer falls over, your Hard Drive erases itself, your
mouse gets et by a cat, or your spouse runs off with the Milk-Person,
TOK takes the 5th and won't say another word until a High$$ shyster
lawyer is available at Bargain Basement Prices for the Defense...
(i.e. sometime shortly after the Heat Death of the Universe of the
Big Crunch...whichever comes first). ergo...Use at your own risk...but
I seriously doubt innocent little TOK would ever cause any problems...
heh..heh..heh ;-)
