                         VIRBAIT V 1.2
                         =============

This program verifies if it was modified, e.g by an virus.
To increase security it uses two independent checksum methods:
a 16-Bit CRC and a simple 16-Bit sum. Both run over the entire program size.

Since a lot of viruses have a 'incubation period' in which they actually
infect files, but don't yet start destructiv activity, the recognition of
their spreading (= modification of executable files) is an fair protection.
In contrast to any scanning software this works with future viruses, too.

VIRBAIT of course only responds on viruses, which infects *.COM files, but
according to the lists from McAfee these are after all 81% of all viruses.

You should run VIRBAIT daily before you turn off the computer, since
at this time the probability that a virus resides in memory is maximal.
If it infects *.COM files then (in this moment at latest) it modifies
VIRBAIT - and you will get an error message.

If you start e.g. WINDOWS or the Norton Commander within your AUTOEXEC.BAT
then you can append a line 'VIRBAIT' at the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Now you only have to leave the user interface (e.g. ALT-F4 or F10) before
you turn off the computer. After that VIRBAIT will run 'automatically'.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program is 'FREEWARE', i.e., anybody can get it free of charge
(in the sense of distribution to the prime cost).

Although I believe, that the program is bug-free, I give NO WARRANTY
that it works correct on your computer.
