     DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
     =======================

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are legally required to register. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
     Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.

     Introduction
     ============

With WordPerfect and carefully chosen fonts just about anyone can
create documents which look professionally printed. Very often
the challenge is to find just the right font for the job at hand.
The macros and templates in this package will allow you to create
a printed catalog of all the fonts available to WordPerfect. With
the printed catalog finding the right font will be much easier.

     WordPerfect 6.1 & 6.0
     ---------------------

This version of FontKat was tested with the versions of
WordPerfect listed below. If you wish to run it with a NEWER
version of WordPerfect, and it doesn't run as this manual says it
should, call for support--there will be either a fix or a new
release, as needed, to fix any problems caused by new features.

          WordPerfect 6.0/DOS
          WordPerfect 6.1/DOS

     Installation
     ------------

Installation of the files comprising the FONTKAT system is
accomplished by running the INSTALL macro provided. Start
WordPerfect 6.0 as you normally do. From the editing screen
activate INSTALL by pressing Macro (Alt-F10), enter the full path
to INSTALL.WPM, and type INSTALL (for example,
"C:\DOWNLOAD\INSTALL"). The installation program will prompt you
to enter three pieces of information:

          1) "Copy the files from:"
This is where the uninstalled files are located. The
default value is A:\. Edit the line as needed to
reflect the full path to the files (such as
               "D:\DOWNLOAD", for instance).

          2) "Copy macro files to:"
The default value is whatever your current personal
macro directory is set to. You should not need to edit
this line unless you have macros in more than one
               directory.

NOTE: FONTMAP will look for its template file
(FONTMAP.FKT) in your personal macro directory.
You must, therefore, manually copy FONTMAP.FKT to
your personal macro directory if you choose to

install the macro files in some place other than
                    your personal macro directory.

          3) "Copy documentation to:"
This is where the documentation file, and other related
documents, will be copied to. The default value will
be your current document directory plus "FONTKAT\".
Edit the line if you would like these files copied
               elsewhere.

NOTE: INSTALL.WPM will NOT be copied to either of these
directories so be sure to keep a backup copy of the
               original FONTKAT disk.

     What Does Fontkat Do?
     ---------------------

One of the new features introduced by WordPerfect in version 6.0
for DOS is the ability to handle scalable fonts without relying
upon an external third party program. For the first time many of
us were able to produce documents with class since we no longer
had to rely upon the handful of fonts built into our printers.
Acquiring additional fonts from various outlets, in a short time
the number of fonts I had available was getting into the
hundreds. Soon I was asking myself, "Which font should I use in
this situation? Is this the font which looked good on screen but
terrible when printed? What does this font REALLY look like?"

FONTKAT is designed to create a custom catalog of your fonts.
With the printed catalog showing samples of all your fonts you
will be able to quickly and easily choose the font which is just
right for the job at hand.

     Overview
     --------

In the next section I will explain in detail all options found on
the various menus. Assuming you can figure those things out for
yourself, here is a quick run down of what is necessary to
produce a catalog of all your fonts.

From the main menu of FONTKAT select the text and point size you
want to use in producing the font samples. Select "Mark Fonts to
Catalog" and mark those fonts you want included in this catalog
and select OK. Now from the main menu select "Create Catalog".
FONTKAT will prompt you to enter a filename to use in saving the

finished catalog. Once you've entered the filename, FONTKAT will
go into action creating the font catalog.

When done FONTKAT will give you a brief report of the font
catalog just created. You will then be asked if you want FONTKAT
to send commands to WordPerfect to print the catalog. If you
answer yes, FONTKAT will send the necessary commands to
WordPerfect and end at the Printer Control screen. If you answer
no, FONTKAT will leave you with the first file comprising the
     catalog displayed on screen.

     Detailed Instructions
     ---------------------

Using FONTKAT should be relatively easy and self-explanatory.
However, I will proceed to explain as thoroughly as possible the
workings of the program to avoid any problems. In addition to
these notes don't forget that there is help available from within
     FONTKAT.

Activate FONTKAT as you would any WordPerfect macro. From the
main editing screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTKAT".

FONTKAT goes through an initialization process which will take a
few seconds. If you have not used FONTKAT before or if you are
using it for the first time with the currently active printer,
then FONTKAT will need to capture the names of all your fonts and
save them to a special configuration file (_FK-SET.WPM). The
presence of this configuration file will speed things up on
     subsequent runs of FONTKAT.

Once the initialization process has completed the Main Menu will
appear. It is divided into three sections:

         Current Printer
         ---------------
The currently active printer is listed along with the total
number of fonts you have marked to be cataloged and the total
number of fonts available for this printer. This section is
         for information purposes only.

Text to Use in Sampling Each Font
         ---------------------------------
There are four ways provided to sample each font. Options 1,
2, 3 and 4 are mutually exclusive meaning when you select one
of these options the others will automatically become
         unselected.

         1) You can have the font name itself to be the text to use
in illustrating the font. This is the default and what
            many will be satisfied with.

            Example:

            Dutch 801 Roman (Speedo)

         2) You can have a short phrase followed by the font name
illustrating the font. The default setting for the short
text is "This is a sample of ". If you select this
option you will then have the ability to customize the
text FONTKAT will use if desired.

            Example:

This is a sample of Dutch 801 Roman (Speedo)

         3) You can have the font name to appear on one line and then
a longer phrase indented on the next line. The font
names themselves would all be in the same initial font
but the indented phrases beneath them would be in the
actual font being illustrated. Several phrases are
supplied to choose from or you can choose to type in your
own phrase (Not in Evaluation Edition).

            Example:

            Dutch 801 Roman (Speedo)
The Quick Brown Fox Jumps over the Lazy Dog

         4) The fourth option is just like number 3 above except the
phrase which will be used to illustrate the font is the
alphabet, along with the other characters available from
the keyboard (Not in Evaluation Edition).

            Example:

            Dutch 801 Roman (Speedo)
                ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
                1234567890-= !@#$%^&*()_+ <>?,./:;'"{}[]

         Font Options
         ------------

This section presents various options dealing with the fonts
themselves. The default size for the font samples is 12
point. If you would like the samples to be of some other
size, change this setting as needed.

"Refresh Font List" is available if you need to update the
list of fonts for the currently active printer in the
configuration file. You would only need to refresh your font
list if you have either added new fonts or deleted old ones
since you last used FONTKAT. If FONTKAT retrieved your font
list during initialization, this option will be "greyed out".

"Mark Fonts to Catalog" presents you with a list of your
fonts on screen. You mark the fonts you want to catalog by
selecting the letter associated with the font, by pressing
the TAB key to highlight the desired font and then pressing
the SPACE bar, or by selecting one of the marking or
unmarking commands on the left side of the screen. You can
mark all the fonts at one time, mark only the current page of
fonts, mark the fonts by type (Speedo, TT, Type 1), or you
can mark the fonts based on a text pattern you enter (such as
"Bold" to mark all fonts with the word "Bold" in its name).
Matching options are available for unmarking the fonts. Once
you have marked the fonts you want to catalog click on OK.

     Creating the Catalog
     --------------------

Once you have marked the fonts to include in the catalog, the
"Create Catalog" option will become available at the bottom of
the screen on the Main Menu. When you select it FONTKAT will
prompt you for a filename to use in saving your font catalog.
Due to limitations imposed by WordPerfect itself and to insure
that everything stays under control, FONTKAT will save small
groups of your fonts to separate files. The actual number of
fonts in the individual files will vary due to the type of font
samples being created and because FONTKAT will end one file and
begin the next at the end of the last full page of font samples.
These individual catalog segment files will be given the filename
you enter with the file extension of ".Sxx", where xx is the
number of the "S"egment file. If you used the default FONTKAT
filename then there may be FONTKAT.S01, FONTKAT.S02, FONTKAT.S03
and so on. These files are saved in your default document
     directory.

During the cataloging process FONTKAT will change the Display
Mode of WordPerfect to Text, if it isn't already set to Text.
Tests have shown a remarkable increase in speed if in Text mode,
so FONTKAT changes to Text Mode automatically. When done the
original Display Mode will be restored.

A box will be display on screen during the cataloging process
showing the progress being made. The font currently being
cataloged is listed along with a bar at the bottom showing the
percent completed. Also shown, and updated after each font, is

the elapsed time thus far along with the average time per font
that the cataloging process is taking. Scalable fonts of type
Speedo, TT or Type 1 will take less time to catalog than will
     native printer fonts.

During the cataloging process you can press the ESC key and halt
the process. You will be given the option of completely
canceling the current catalog, stoping the current catalog but
saving information in the configuration file so the catalog can
be finished later, or you can resume the current run. If you
choose to stop the current catalog, saving information for it to
be finished later, you will be asked to finish the catalog on
your very next run of FONTKAT. During the subsequent run of
FONTKAT, in which the unfinished catalog is being finished,
pressing ESC will provide you will the option to totally cancel
the catalog or resuming the current run. You would not have the
option to halt the catalog a second time with information being
saved to finish the work later.

     Printing Your Font Catalog
     --------------------------

When done FONTKAT will give you a brief report of the font
catalog just created. You will then be asked if you want FONTKAT
to send commands to WordPerfect to print the catalog. FONTKAT
will NOT do anything other than send "Print Document on Disk"
commands to WordPerfect. FONTKAT will not:
         > initialize your printer
         > tell WordPerfect to print the job graphically
         > set either text or graphics quality
         > tell WordPerfect to print the document using the duplex
            feature
         > do anything else which may be necessary in your situation

If any of these things needs to be done from within WordPerfect
before printing your font catalog, answer NO to FONTKAT's prompt.
If you answer yes, FONTKAT will send the necessary commands to
WordPerfect and end at the Printer Control screen. If you answer
no, FONTKAT will display a reminder screen about KATPRINT and
leave you with the first file comprising the catalog displayed on
     screen.

Font Catalogs Using Multinational Character Sample
     --------------------------------------------------
     (Not in Evaluation Edition)

One of the options you have with FONTKAT is to create a font
catalog illustrating the capabilities of selected fonts to print
multinational characters. This should be especially useful for

All Rights Reserved (C)Copyright 1994-96 Alex D. Ogden

     F O N T K A T ( D O S ) V. 1.1 15

users needing multinational characters who are uncertain which
     fonts support such characters.

From the Main Menu select "Font Name Followed by Longer Phrase on
Next Line" as the text to use in sampling each font. Once it has
been selected the option to select a phrase becomes available.
Select "Phrase:" and cursor to the entry near the top of the list
which begins, "Multinational: ". Select it and FONTKAT will use
"Multinational: " followed by several multinational characters
as the text to illustrate each font. FONTKAT does not use the
entire multinational character set but, rather, about a dozen
carefully chosen characters to give you a sample of the more
     commonly used multinational characters.
NOTE: if you know of additional characters which
ought to be included in this option, please bring
            them to our attention.

To print your font catalog with multinational character samples
set "Graphics Quality" to "Do Not Print." Printing with graphics
print quality set to "Do Not Print" helps show which fonts are
     missing multinational characters.

     ========

     What Does KatPrint Do?
     ----------------------

KATPRINT is a utility to aid users of FONTKAT in printing their
font catalogs. Actually, FONTKAT itself can take care of sending
print commands to WordPerfect once the font catalog has been
built. KATPRINT only comes into play when you need to print an
     existing font catalog.

     Printing a Catalog
     ------------------

Activate KATPRINT as you would any WordPerfect macro. From the
main editing screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "KATPRINT".

During the initialization process KATPRINT searches for any font
catalogs created by FONTKAT which exists in your default document
directory. If none are found, KATPRINT issues a brief message
     and ends.

At the Main Menu of KATPRINT the font catalogs found are listed
in a drop list. Cursor to the font catalog you want to print and
press ENTER. The cursor will then be on the "Print Catalog"
option. Again, simply press ENTER. KATPRINT will quickly
determine how many segment files there is for the selected font

catalog and then issue a message warning you that KATPRINT will
only send "Print Document on Disk" commands to WordPerfect and
will not do anything else. KATPRINT will not:
         > initialize your printer
         > tell WordPerfect to print the job graphically
         > set either text or graphics quality
         > tell WordPerfect to print the document using the duplex
            feature
         > do anything else which may be necessary in your situation

If any of these things needs to be done from within WordPerfect
before printing your font catalog, answer NO to KATPRINT's
prompt. If you answer yes, KATPRINT will send the necessary
commands to WordPerfect and end at the Printer Control screen.
If you answer no, KATPRINT will end.

     FontMap (Not in Evaluation Edition)
     =======

     What Does FontMap Do?
     ---------------------

International/symbol/dingbat type of fonts are difficult to use
simply because there is no easy way to know what keypress will
type what character from the font. FONTMAP is a utility to
provide you with a printed keyboard map to such fonts.

     Detailed Instructions
     ---------------------

Activate FONTMAP as you do any macro program. From the main
editing screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTMAP".

When the main menu of FONTMAP appears the cursor will be on the
"Create a Keyboard Font Map" button. Press ENTER or Click on it
to begin the process of creating a map to a font.

To create a font map you only need to specify two fonts. FONTMAP
will display the Font dialog and prompt you to select the first
of these two fonts. Select a font which will be appropriate for
the title for the font map as well as the labels for the keyboard
keys. Be sure whatever font you select is one which has the
characters which match those on your keyboard. Most of the fonts
I have would qualify but some I thought would be appropriate had
nothing showing for certain characters. So be sure you select a
font which has all the characters in it.

Once you have selected the font for the title and key labels
FONTMAP will prompt you to select the font for which you need a
keyboard map. This may be an international or symbol font or any

other type of font you want to have a keyboard map to. Once you
1have made your selection FONTMAP asks for you to confirm the
choices you have made. If the information is not correct, answer
NO and start over. Answering YES causes the actual keyboard font
     map to be created.

     Printing Your Font Map
     ----------------------

Once the keyboard font map has been created FONTMAP asks if you
want commands sent to WordPerfect to start printing your font
map. FONTMAP will simply send "Print Document on Disk" commands
and nothing else. FONTMAP will not:
         > initialize your printer
         > tell WordPerfect to print the job graphically
         > set either text or graphics quality
         > do anything else which may be necessary in your situation

If any of these things needs to be done from within WordPerfect
before printing your keyboard font map, answer NO to FONTMAP's
prompt. If you answer yes, FONTMAP will send the necessary
commands to WordPerfect and end at the Printer Control screen.
If you answer no, FONTMAP will end with your font map on the
     screen.

     Trouble-shooter's Guide
     =======================

At the time of release, only these problems were known. If you
should experience any problems at all, please let us know. We
will do all we can to rectify the problem. If it cannot be
handled by FONTKAT, then a report of that problem will be posted
     in this slot.

     1) FONTKAT is well into creating a large catalog using text
option 3 or 4 when my computer simply locks up, or a QEMM
exception 13 error occurs, for no apparent reason. What's wrong
     and what can I do?

First, the QEMM exception 13 error is QEMM's assessment that an
illegal memory call has occurred, and it is generally instead of
a lockup with EMM386/HIMEM. It allows you to choose to either
terminate the software or reboot, although sometimes you don't
have a choice, and must reboot.

So far, we suspect either a bug in WordPerfect 6.0b or a conflict
with a TSR or driver program. Updates or workarounds will be
available free to registered users once more is known about the
     problem.

     F O N T K A T ( D O S ) V. 1.1 18

If this problem should arise, try cataloging small groups of
fonts at a time, of no more than 80% of the count when the crash
     occurred.

     2) Occassionally part of a font sample ends up printing in
     another font. What's going on??

The problem is not with FONTKAT but apparently a character
mapping problem in your printer driver. I would suggest you
report the driver bug to WordPerfect at their regular help lines.
They will advise you on obtaining an updated printer driver.
