The School Energy Doctor is a multimedia production designed to lead high school students through a
water and energy audit of their school. It provides students with easy calculations to see how efficiency
and renewable energy can save energy, water, and money as well as reduce pollution right at their own
school. The School Energy Doctor will be distributed with another CREST product, The Sun's Joules, a CD-
ROM multimedia encyclopedia on renewable energy, but it is also being made available separately. The
School Energy Doctor is not intended to be a stand-alone educational package and should be supplemented
appropriately with other material explaining the context and relevance of the information presented in it.

This package is freely distributable shareware software. Please read the file "Register.txt" which
explains the terms of the shareware arrangement.

This document contains information to help you get the most out of the School Energy Doctor. Topics
included:

     - System requirements
     - Installation notes
     - How to use the School Energy Doctor
     - Comments on curricula to supplement the School Energy Doctor

System Requirements

The Microsoft Windows version of the School Energy Doctor has been designed to run on a machine
running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or greater (including Windows 95). The program requires 4 megabytes of
available RAM memory, 6 megabytes of hard disk space, and monitor set to display 256 colors.

Installation notes

Use the program Setup.exe, provided on disk 1, to install the School Energy Doctor.

When you have completed installing the School Energy Doctor, you should have a program group called
School Energy Dr. with the following files in it:

Schnrgdr.exe - The main multimedia program
Auditfrm.doc - Microsoft Word 5.0 version of the Audit Form
Auditfrm.wri - A text version of the Audit Form
Calcs.xlw - Microsoft Excel 4.0 version of the program's calculations
Readme.wri - This file

How to use the School Energy Doctor

Start by looking over the School Energy Dr. 1.05 multimedia program and learning how the program works.
Once you have tried this, print out the Audit Form and gather the information requested on the form. This
will take a fair bit of planning and time. Once you have completed the Audit Form, return to the School
Energy Doctor to enter the data and see how your school can save with efficiency and renewable energy.
After you have used the program for a while, you may be interested in looking in more detail at the
calculations used in the program. You can do this by opening the Calculation Spreadsheet file (requires
Microsoft Excel 4.0 or later or a program which can read Microsoft Excel 4.0 Workbooks). All of these files
are described below.

File name: Schnrgdr.exe (School Energy Dr. 1.05)

This is the School Energy Doctor multimedia program. This is where the information gained from an audit of
a school (performed with the guide of the Audit Form, see below) is put to use as students explore
possibilities for energy efficiency, water efficiency, and renewable energy. The program is fairly self-
explanatory. It has a help section available from the File menu and most text in the program can be clicked
with a mouse to bring up context-sensitive information for greater detail. This program can be explored at
any time and is the heart of the School Energy Doctor, but to fully use the program, the Audit Form should
be printed and completed first. There are further instructions within both the program and the Audit Form.

File name: Auditfrm.doc

This form should be printed and used to collect information to be entered in the School Energy Doctor.
Detailed instructions with many suggestions on how to conduct the audit are included alongside each
question of the audit. This audit is best performed after reading the material in the Science Room of the
School Energy Doctor, which gives insights into the technologies that are being examined.

File name: Calcs.xlw

This spreadsheet is the complex engine from which the School Energy Doctor was developed. Every
calculation that takes place in the multimedia program and every question that is asked in the audit was first
developed in this spreadsheet. It is included for those who want to explore the program's fundamentals. It
also allows students (or teachers) a means of manipulating calculations used in the School Energy Doctor.
Please note that this file is completely independent of the multimedia program, and changing the
spreadsheet does not affect the multimedia program in any way.

Comments on curricula to supplement the School Energy Doctor

Since the School Energy Doctor was developed to be distributed with The Sun's Joules, it does not have
much of the basic science and interdisciplinary educational material that should accompany the presentation
of an audit of this type. It does not answer the questions of why, concentrating instead on how much, and
what. To provide this rounding, the School Energy Doctor should be presented either with The Sun's
Joules, or within the context of another resource or classroom discussion.

The primary topics which are lacking are explanations of environmental effects and the significance of
aggregate numbers. Within the Earth Science room of the multimedia program, some fairly good data on
local pollution has been gathered and presented, but there is no discussion of the significance in the levels
of pollution being released. In all of the analysis rooms of the School Energy Doctor's Smart School, there
is
data presented for the school in daily, monthly, or yearly views, but the relatively small amount of savings
possible at one school should be presented with an eye to how much could be saved if every school took
similar measures. These aggregate numbers can be very helpful in showing the importance of even small
improvements.

About the School Energy Doctor Online

CREST has created a World Wide Web page on the Internet which is dedicated to the School Energy
Doctor. In addition, have started a listserv (an Internet email discussion group), to allow users of the
School
Energy Doctor to contact one another as well as contact the developers of the School Energy Doctor.
Information about the listserv and other aspects of the School Energy Doctor Online can be found by using
a Web browser such as Netscape to visit CREST at the following URL:

    http://solstice.crest.org/efficiency/SED/

You can also send email to schnrgdr@crest.org to get an automatic reply with more information about the
School Energy Doctor Online.

To subscribe to the listserv, send an email message to majordomo@crest.org with only "subscribe
SCHNRGDR-L" as the body of the message.

About CREST

The Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology is the primary program of the Solar Energy
Research and Education Foundation (SEREF), an educational non-profit organization based in Washington,
DC. CREST focuses on the development of educational multimedia CD-ROMs and the operation of Solstice,
an Internet information service dedicated to the development of sustainable sources of energy.

CREST's other major software complete as of early 1996 include The Sun's Joules, an educational CD-ROM
for high school students; the Greening of the White House CD-ROM, which documents energy and
environmental upgrades at the White House complex and how these technologies and practices can be
applied to homes across the country; and the Renewable Energy Exhibit, currently still a demonstration
version (0.2), this CD-ROM is a general primer on renewable energy technologies, with detailed information
on bioenergy, geothermal, small hydropower, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, and wind, as well as sections
on solar physics, global economic and environmental impacts, and case studies.
