System Requirements
-------------------

Winfoil runs on any IBM or 100% compatible with the Intel 386,
486 or Pentium CPU and requires Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows NT,
Windows 95 or Windows 98 . At least 8 MB of memory and 6.5 MB of
hard disk space is required. Graphics modes supported are; EGA ,
VGA and SVGA. Winfoil will print to any Windows
supported printer and can run on a network.

Installation
------------

1. You will need to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to run the DOS SHARE
utility if you are running Windows version 3.1. Windows version 3.11
(Windows for Workgroups), Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT
automatically load VSHARE (a form of SHARE).
If you are running Windows 3.11, 95, 98 or NT go directly to step 2.

After the path statement which has C:\DOS in it add the following
line before the WIN command that starts Windows:

SHARE /L:500 /F:5100

If the /L or the /F setting to SHARE has a larger value than listed here,
leave the setting as it is rather than reducing it.

Save the file and restart your computer.
If you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, type C:\DOS\SHARE as a line
in a text file and save it as AUTOEXEC.BAT then restart your computer.

2. Run SETUP.EXE on Disk 1 either by double clicking on the file
whilst in FILE MANAGER, or by using the RUN command from the FILE menu
in PROGRAM MANAGER or from the Start Run on the Taskbar in
Windows 95, 98 or NT4.

eg; A:\SETUP

Windows 98 Installation Problem
-------------------------------
In some circumstances when setup is run a GPF in ISINST30 or _Ins0433._mp
occurs at the end of setup initialization.

Cause
-----
This problem can occur as a result of a conflict between
InstallShield Express and other drivers that are loaded.
In particular, if the MSWheel component of Microsoft IntelliPoint
2.2 is loaded, you will see this error.

Workaround
----------
You may use one of the following methods to avoid this problem:

Disable MSWheel before running setup. To do this,
press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, select Mswheel, and click End Task.

Or

Boot the computer in safe mode before running setup.

Step through each screen by clicking on the NEXT button.
Select the destination directory, Click on the NEXT button.
Select a program folder and click on the NEXT button.
Keep clicking on the NEXT button as required.

If the setup program is on multiple disks you will be prompted
to insert disk 2 after all disk 1 files are installed, then disk 3.
You can cancel the installation process by clicking on the CANCEL button.

The Setup program checks for the existing versions of DLL and VBX files,
verifying the version information. If the file already is installed and
it is a later version than the one on the installation disk then it
will not install the file. The Setup program also checks if SHARE is
loaded. Share must be loaded for the Microsoft ACCESS database to
function.

In Windows 95, NT 4 and 98 an entry will be created in the Taskbar for Winfoil.
In Windows 3.1, 3.11 and Windows NT 3.51 program groups and items will be created.
The installation program includes an uninstall option. Use this option to
remove Winfoil.

3. The first time you run Winfoil you will be prompted to enter your name.
Please enter your first name and last name then click on the OK button.
This will then unlock the registered features.

Troubleshooting
---------------
Invalid Database Problem after Installation
-------------------------------------------
When starting Winfoil I get an "invalid database format" error message

Look for a file called VBDB300.DLL in the windows\system directory.
Rename or move it to another directory in the windows\system directory
and rerun the setup program to reinstall Winfoil.

There is a version of this file which is incompatible with Winfoil and
it's version 1.1 Access database.

Do not delete the file as it may be used by either Microsoft Access
2.0 or some other shareware program. In most cases the version supplied
with Winfoil will work with other programs. If this causes a problem
with any other program than please contact the author so that you can
be can supplied with a special version of winfoil.

Bug Fix & Enhancement History
-----------------------------

18/07/2000
Build 14

Fixed calculation of vertical tail area. Was previously doubling
the area.

Build 13

Fixed Skin Thickness update in Print Wing screen.
Was not updating thickness correctly.

Modified Overlay Airfoil Screen in Airfoil CAD
Screen to now have a REMOVE button. Click
on this button to remove the overlay.

Modified scrolling in the Airfoil CAD screen
to scroll in large increments when clicking in the
shaded portion of the scroll bar. Scrolls in small
increments when clicking on the arrow buttons on the
scroll bar.

When copying an existing airfoil the new name is set the the
current name to save time when entering a new name.

When renaming an airfoil the current name is shown in the box
to save time entering a new name.

Airfoil maximum thickness shift function has been fixed
to correctly proportion the shift of the thickness point.

Fixed Naca Wizard. 67,1 series generation no longer causes
an error when coordinates are generated.

Fixed spar printing. No longer scales spar for tapered
wings.

Fixed divide by zero error in NACA Wizard when selecting
the 67,1 series 6 digit mean line series.

Fixed plotting of swept wing planview in the design cad screen.
Was incorrectly tapering the spar at the tip regardless of the
spar width settings.

Modified rib plotting routine to cater for extra large ribs.
Can now cater for ribs which have thicknesses greater than the
depth of one page. Alos added page markers and page numbering.

Modified airfoil Export routine to automatically select
the currently selected airfoil in the Airfoil List screen
to be the default airfoil for export.

Modified parsing routine used for airfoil coordinate
imports to cater for the case where there are two spaces
instead of one.

Added a new utility in the Tool menu to generate airfoil
coordinates. Can save time when designing your own airfoils
by calculating the missing coordinates. Also required because
the skin plotting routine for ribs will not work correctly
if there are insufficient coordinates.

Fixed Design Cad and Airfoil Cad screens so that when the mouse
is moved when adding coordinates the X and y positions are updated
on the screen.

Build 12

Fixed Soartech coordinate import so that subscript array errors
do not occur with incorrectly formatted coordinate files.

Fixed DXF export for wing, tail and fuselage designs.
If the name of the component exceeded 8 characters or
had spaces or non alphabetic characters then an error
would occur.

Modified DXF export to shift the origin of the component
further down the page so that the whole component fitted.
Previously some of the component would have been off the page.

Fixed Design List screen to check sizes of resizable
tabs before changing the sizes of the graphs. Previously
this was causing an error message to be displayed.

Made the Ok button in the Unlock screen not a default
button. This could prevent the program being unlocked
if the user acidentally hit the enter key after only
typing their first name.

29/6/99

Build 11

Fixed Eppler Coordinate Edit. New and Insert
were not working correctly.

Added new button to apply rib length change to all
ribs. Also added warning message for both rib and
skin thickness change before applying them to all
ribs.

Added new import function to import PEF Airfoil Data
Files. This allows data files produced by Martin Hepperles
web site at; http://beadec1.ea.bs.dlr.de/Airfoils/calcfoil.htm
to be imported. This web page provides the capability to
analyse an airfoil.

Added Pitching moment data to Lift/Drag data tab. You can now
edit this data.

Fixed error in Design Properties screen which was occuring
when a rib was changed and another rib was selected.

Build 10

Added existing file check in DXF Export in Print Airfoil Screen.
Now prompts for overwrite if the file already exists.

Soartech Airfoil Coordinate import is now the same as the Eppler
Import. It will now interpolate for missing airfoil coordinates.

Modified Eppler and Soartech airfoil coordinate import to cater
for new airfoil coordinate format (Lidnicer) on the UIUC Web Site.

Added capability to copy airfoil coordinates to the clipboard in the
airfoil coordinates tab in the Airfoil List screen. This feature is
activated by right clicking on the coordinate grid and clicking on the
Copy Coordinates to Clipboard popup menu item. This data can then
be used to populate web page input fields or as a means to transfer
data to other programs. Martin Hepperles web site at;
http://beadec1.ea.bs.dlr.de/Airfoils/calcfoil.htm provides a web page
which you can use to analyse an airfoil design. You can use this
feature to quickly paste in the coordinates for an existing or
new airfoil which you have designed. A step by step description
of this procedure is available on the Winfoil web site.

Build 9

Fixed RAF 33 Airfoil Coordinates.
Added Eppler 207 Coordinates.

Fixed Wing/tail/Fuselage printing. Units of measurement was
defaulting to lower case if the Wing Wizard was not used
to create a Wing. Now always saves the units in upper case.

Prompt for save of wing design in Design CAD screen before
opening the Stability or Reynolds Number graphs. If you
did not manually save the design after changing it then the
graphs may be incorrect as they would be using old data.

Modified check for saving Design CAD details to restore
all the original design details if the user decided not
to save the changes. Previously if you selected not to save
the changes and opened the print design screen then the details
in the screen would be a mix of the old and new details.

Fixed Area conversion function. Square feet were being
incorrectly converted when converting to square millimetres.

Build 8

Applied rounding to Reynolds number calculation to eliminate
discrepancies when changing wing measurement units.

If you use the drag lookup buton in the drag breakdown screen
and the wing component uses a measurement unit different to that
selected for the dragbreakdown list the area would not be converted.
This has been fixed.

Fixed calculation of area of fuselage components. Previously
was doubling the area.

Fixed 3D screen. Winfoil now shows different tip airfoil
if selected for a wing or tail design. It does not however
interpolate every rib as this would dramatically slow
down the initial load of the 3D screen.

Fixed repainting problem in Design Cad screen. If another
windows application was dragged over the Design Cad screen
then a stack overflow error could occur.

DXf file name for wing or tail plan was being given a rib dxf
file name by default which could result in a rib dxf file
being overwritten. This has been fixed to give the file
the name of the design.

3d View in the Additional Design Properties screen has
been amended to properly display wing shapes which had a
straight trailing edge eg; delta and swept back wings.
This was being incorrectly drawn. A delta shape was being
displayed with a swept forward trailing edge.

Wing Rib length is now not overridden by the calculated
length when changed in the Additional Design Properties
screen. This eliminates the rounding error which was happening
in Build 7 as the calculated length could previously overwrite
the entered length and due to rounding the length would be
in some cases slightly different.

Wing sweep angle is now stored in the database. In Build 7
rounding errors would occur when the angle was recalculated
and the sweep angle would not be the same as the angle
which was originally entered.

Prevent errors when scrolling through airfoil list quickly
using the down or up arrow keys.

Build 7

Soartech Airfoil Performance Data import has been
fixed. The data file format has changed.

Allow automatic rotation when buttons are pressed
in 3D screen.

Limit zoom out on 3D screen to prevent GPF.

Allow 2 decimal places for wing sweep angle.
Winfoil calculates the angle and as a result
rounding can cause the angle to be slightly different
to the angle which was entered.

Stop spars being created without selecting a spar type.

Fixed 3D module to cater for airfoils where a proportion
of the y coordinates are zero. Fixed RAF 33 Airfoil
coordinates.

Added ability to set the rib length in the Design Properties
screen for each rib. Rounding may cause the rib length
to have a slight variation to the actual entered length.

Build 6

Added Test Printer button to Preferences screen to enable the
printing of test lines to enable calibration of a printer.

Changed design coordinates screen to allow the length to be
entered in place of the lower coordinate position.

Fixed Wing Wizard. Ribs were only being created when the Save
button was pressed in the Design Cad screen after using the
Wing Wizard.

Drag Item drag ceofficients reformatted to use a | character as\
the delimiter as the previous delimiter , is used as a decimal point
in some countries. Winfoil will automatically convert these numbers
the first time it is run so that they will be formatted according
to the country's number formatting. This problem would cause an
error when the Lookup button was pressed in the Edit Drag Breakdown Item
screen.

Build 5

Fixed loading of INI file settings. Printer Correction factors and
performance settings would be initialised if the regional settings
number format was not the English format. Winfoil now verifies
the values against the Regional settings and formats these accordingly.
This problem would also cause a divide by zero error in the performance
tabs. These tabs have been fixed so that zero values will not
cause this error to occur.

Added option for DXF export. Can now force export data in US,english number
format when Winfoil is run with non Us, english number formatting.

Spelling error for overlay airfoil on pop up menu in Airfoil Cad.
Albert's Ambry web link added to help menu and about screen.

Fixed tool tip for add points button in airfoil cad screen. Previously
said that right mouse button click would cancel points addition.

Picture box in Design tab would display an error if it was resized.

Airfoil import fixed. Could attempt to import an airfoil while
one was already in the process of being imported.

29/10/98
Build 4

Add delimiter option in Preferences Import/Export tab.
This is used to set the delimiter for import/export.

25/9/98
Fixed error when adding new points to an existing wing.
Add check for existence of a design component when copying.

31/7/98

Enhancements;

Added new additional properties screen for Design CAD Screen. This
screen provides the following;
1. View design data from drag breakdown screen. Use the values in
this screen to create a new wing or tail design.
2. Rib View showing skin and spar locations. Shows interpolated
rib sections if root and tip ribs are different. Skin thickness
is now set in this screen.
3. Adjust wing sweep angle and sweep position reference.
4. 3D view of a wing or tail design. Rotate in 3 dimensions,
view as a mesh, solid mesh or rendered object. Will be enhanced
at a later date to render fuselages and eventually entire
aircraft.

New Menu Item What's New added. Select this menu item to open
Help topic listing new features and how to access them.

New option on start up to display Help topic listing new features.

Prints calculated performance when printing specification.

Added Build No. This indicates a sub version number.
This is used to apply changes to the database automatically
on start up to cater for new database fields for fixes
and minor enhancements.

Added Stall speed and estimated maximum speed lines
to Power Required and Lift to Drag ratio graphs.

Wing loading and power loading are now calculated.

Drag Coefficient look ups finished for Fuselages, wheels, struts
and rigging wires.

Dropdown lists added to Wing Wizard and Add Design screens to
allow quick data entry.

Wing Wizard now has a drop down list of design names. A wing name
can now be either typed in or selected from the dropdown list.

Fixes;

Fixed bug in NACA Airfoil Wizard when saving a new airfoil.

Fixed bug in design cad which would result in a design being
lost. If you edited an existing design in the Design Cad screen
and then selected a different design you were prompted to save
the changes. If you selected the 'No' button then the design would
be deleted.

Fixed bug in Design Cad when designing fuselages. Would display the
right vertical datum line as the 'tip'. Changed to display as
'datum'

Bug in performance data print has been fixed. Was printing the
Power Required units as Horsepower even though the selected
power units were not Horsepower.

Scaling bug in Design Cad screen has been fixed. This was causing
a design to be incorrectly proportioned when the units of measurement
were changed.

Printer Setup error message fixed.

Search screen fixed so that search text box would not disappear.

Fixed drag coefficient lookup for horizontal and vertical tail
surfaces in drag breakdown screen.
