WinSplit 1.3b 1996 Hannu Pohjanheimo, All Rights Reserved

ABOUT

WinSplit 1.3 splits large files into many small even EXE-files, so you
can transfer them to disks. It can of course join them back again.
What is WinSplit for ? If you download large files at work and want
to transfer them home or you have a big file for printing office and so on.

NEW FEATURES

Now you can choose either the size or the number of the pieces or
split directly to floppies. The number of pieces is increased to 99.
Now you can make the pieces self joining, ie. EXE-files. In this way
it is not necessary to have WinSplit to join them back to original
condition. This version is backwards compatible with previous versions.
It can join old files, but old versions can not join files split with
version 1.3. To join old filetype just change the file types filter
when the file selector is visible.

INSTALLATION

WinSplit doesn't need any installation, just copy all files into
a directory and execute WINSPLIT.EXE. WINSPLIT.EXE and WINSPLIT.DAT must
be in the same directory. It is not recommended to run WinSplit from
floppy disk. Of course you may install a new icon into the
Program Manager. WinSplit requires Windows 3.1 and a 386 computer or better.

HOW TO USE

SPLIT A FILE

You can split a file with three different ways
- split by pieces, enter the number of pieces you want to split
  the file
- split by size, enter the size of each piece
- split directly to floppy,
- optionally in all cases you can make the files self joining.

SPLIT BY PIECES

- To split a file by the number of pieces, click on the editbox (left to
the -Split by pieces- button) and enter the number of the pieces you want,
  min 2, max 99.
- press the -Split by pieces- button
- with the file selector, search the file you are splitting and press -OK-
- now, the file name, number of the pieces and their size is shown in
the info box, at the top of the WinSplit screen
- at this time it is possible to cancel the operation with the -Quit- button
- if the size of the parts is right, just press again the -Split by pieces-
  button.
- WinSplit always writes the pieces into its start-up directory.

SPLIT BY SIZE

- To split a file by the size of pieces, click on the editbox (left to
the -Split by size- button) and enter the number of the pieces you want,
  min 1000, max 9999999.
- press the -Split by size- button
- with the file selector search the file you are splitting and press -OK-
- now, the file name, number of the pieces and their size is shown in
  the info box.
- at this time it is possible to cancel the operation with the -Quit- button
- if the number of the parts is right, just press again the -Split by size-
  button.
- WinSplit always writes the pieces into its start-up directory.

SPLIT DIRECTLY TO FLOPPY

- To split a file directly to floppy disks,
- press the -Split to floppy- button
- with the file selector search the file you are splitting and press -OK-
- now, the file name, number of the disks required is shown in the info box.
The required disks is not exact, because it depends of the disk type and
  free space on them.
- at this time it is possible to cancel the operation with the -Quit- button
- if you have enough disks available, just press again the -Split to floppy-
  button.
- WinSplit always writes the pieces to the drive A:.
- It is not important that the disks are empty. WinSplit always checks how
much free space the disk have. All files already on disk remain intact.
- note, it is possible to make a mistake with the file naming system. WinSplit
always checks if the first file exist and then changes the extension if
necessary. If you split one file to two disks and then split another file,
which have the same name but different extension, to the end of the second
disk. The files in the second disk have the same name and extensions 001 and
002 although they don't belong together. Be always careful if you split
  several files to same disk.

MAKE SELF JOINING FILES

- This option is available in all the three ways to split a file
- click on the box beside the -Do EXE- text. When the tick is in the
box, the first piece will be EXE-file and the rest have extension of
  three numbers.
- depending of the split method operation continue as previous sections,
expect at the end you are prompted to insert the first disk again
- the file size in info window is different than the original file
size because it contains also the executable code for joining

FILE NAME AND EXTENSION

The following format is used for naming the pieces. The file name is
the same as the original file. File name extensions are numbers, from
001 to 099, depending of the number of the pieces. If you split several
files, it is possible that some of the files have the same name but
extensions differ, for example FILE.EXE, FILE.DLL, FILE.TXT. In this
case, WinSplit will change the first number of the extension,
therefore the extension may vary from 001 to 999. The following example
will specify the naming, three files are split into 3, 4 and 2 pieces.

FILE.EXE -> FILE.001, FILE.002, FILE.003
FILE.DLL -> FILE.101, FILE.102, FILE.103, FILE.104
FILE.TXT -> FILE.201, FILE.202

Following example shows the file names if Do EXE option is set. In this
case the first file have extension of EXE, a number is added to the end
of the file name, or the last letter is replaced with a number. All the
following pieces have extensions as previous.

FILE.EXE -> FILE0.EXE, FILE.002, FILE.003
FILE.DLL -> FILE1.EXE, FILE.102, FILE.103, FILE.104
FILE.TXT -> FILE2.EXE, FILE.202

This allows up to ten files with the same name. It is important to
understand this naming system in order to keep the right files grouped
when you copy them. With Windows FileManager, sort the directory by
file type and you have the file groups in consecutive order.

JOIN THE PIECES BACK

- To join the previously split pieces back to the original condition,
press the - Join files- button.
- Search the first part of the files with the file selector. The extension
filter is set to *.?01, because the first piece of the files always have
  extension that ends 01.
- WinSplit now collects all the pieces and joins them back to one file.
- You must always have all the pieces in the same subdirectory. If the
pieces are on floppies WinSplit will prompt you for the next disk.
- WinSplit always writes the output file into its start-up directory,
that's why you must start it from hard disk.
- WinSplit knows the original file name, size and the number of the pieces.
If an error appears it is shown in the info box.

JOIN SELF JOINING FILES

- to join self joining EXE files, execute the first piece from File Manager
- Note, in this case you can also start from floppy disk.
- with the file selector go to the subdirectory where you want to join the
files and press -OK-. Note, in file selector there is string xxx in the
file name box, don't change it. It is a just a trick to get the directory
  name.
- now joining starts and you will be prompted if the pieces are on floppies.
- this method makes it easier to give files to your friends or transfer them
anywhere because the receiver doesn't need to have WinSplit.

- QUIT will close the program.
