WELCOME to Family Matters. Family Matters is a Windows Genealogy
program from MatterWare, authored by Ray Nicklas, reachable via e-mail
at MatterWare@aol.com. If you have already registered your copy of
Family Matters, you have the ability to store as many persons in as
many different files as you wish. If you have not yet registered,
each data file is limited to twenty families. Payment of the registration
fee will provide you with a User ID, Key Code, and the latest version.
(See ORDER.TXT for registration and ordering information.)

If you already use a genealogy program, Family Matters can import your
GEDCOM data. Whether registered or not, import as much as you like,
though the un-registered version will not allow additions once the
ten-family limit is exceeded.

A fully capable web site can be generated, without limit to the number
of families or persons contained in the data file. Once you have
placed your FM-generated genealogical site on the web, drop me a line
at matterware@aol.com, with a short paragraph describing its content,
and your URL. There will be a page at the Family Matters web site
linking the sites that send me that type of information.

COMPUTER HARDWARE. Family Matters will requires at least a 486DX/50.
The memory needs depends on the processor, operating system, and
what else is loaded in memory. Windows will utilize the disk for
program portions that do not fit in memory, thus slowing your
computer. Slower processors, and advanced versions of Windows,
places more demands on memory. Thus, 16MB is the recommended
amount for most situations. In addition, the presence of
secondary cache can be of significant benefit.

If you use a program that attempts to simulate more memory
than you actually have, you should know that database programs
like Family Matters are aggressive users of physical memory.
You will be better off installing actual physical memory,
rather than using a program that sacrifices processing power
for memory numbers.

INSTALLATION from MatterWare floppies. RUN the Setup program on Disk 1
from the Program Manager's FILE menu, or Start menu on Windows95.

INSTALLATION from downloaded .zip files. Unzip ALL FOUR downloaded
files into a SINGLE TEMPOARY DIRECTORY; not the directory you intend
to install Family Matters into. (this will total 52 files)

INSTALLATION CAUTION: Some unzipping programs may act differently,
depending on the file content of the zip archive. WinZip, for
instance, will default to a different destination directory when
a file named setup.exe is a part of the archive. This will cause
a "not found" message when setup.exe is executed without the files
from the other zips. If this should happen, switch to the use of
WinZip's Classic Interface, where you will have control over the
destination directory.

MORE INSTALLATION CAUTION: Some anti-virus programs interfere with
the installation. Boot your computer with you antivirus program
in-active if you get any message during installation about an
inability to establish a DDE session with the program manager.
If this should happen, temporarilly disable the anti-virus program,
and boot without it active. You can then re-enable it once the
installation is complete.

NEXT, RUN the Setup program fron the FILE menu on the Program Manager,
or the Start menu on Windows95.

SUPPORT. The User ID and Key Code, supplied when you register, will also
unlock updated versions of Family Matters that you may later download.
The file FMxxx1.ZIP will contain everything you need to upgrade. The
file VERSIONS.TXT explains the files needed to be copied for the upgrade.

On the Internet, the Web site http://members.aol.com/matterware will
contain the necessary replacement files, and instructions for updating.
You can register there to be automatically notified of changes
at the web site.

Should you decide not to purchase Family Matters, drop me a line at
MatterWare@aol.com and tell me what features you felt you needed,
what version number you tried, and what caused you to choose not to
purchase at this time. Please also indicate the relative importance
of your needs.

Please read the file LICENSE.TXT for a full discussion of your use and
distribution rights. See ORDERS.TXT for registration and ordering
information. See VERSIONS.TXT for a version/release/upgrade history.
The file PRINTME.WRI can get you familiarized with FM's capabilities.

Good luck on your Ancestral Hunt.
