Purpose of Card Guard

Card Guard is designed to bring the convenience of on-line credit
card ordering to everyone, while providing peace of mind that your
credit card number cannot be easily stolen or misused. This service
is provided to you at no expense. The encoding software that
accompanies this help document is freely distributeable, subject to
the included license agreement.

Each merchant registered to use Card Guard receives a unique code
and data file. Therefore, a single credit card number can be used
to create many Card Guard codes, each code being unique for a given
merchant. The software and data needed to decode these codes is
provided only to the registered merchant.

Installation

If you obtained Card Guard as a self-extracting, compressed file, it
was automatically installed when you ran it. A directory called
"CARDGARD" should have been created on your C: drive. The directory
contains this freely distributeable help file (GUARD.HLP), the freely
distributeable encoding program (GUARD.EXE), and one or more merchant
data files ending in ".CGD"

If you obtained Card Guard in a Zip file format, use an Unzip program
to extract the contents to a directory. It is recommended that you
place the files in a directory of its own and titled "CARDGARD."

The first time you run Card Guard, you will be presented with an
Installation dialog. From here, you can choose to create icons for
the Program Manager or Windows 95 Start menu. You can also
automatically configure your World Wide Web browser to use Card Guard
if the browser program is detected on your system.

Creating & using Card Guard codes

Once you have obtained Card Guard from a registered merchant, you can
use it to create a code corresponding to your credit card number.
Simply run Card Guard from the Windows desktop or directly from a
merchant's Web page, then select the merchant name and enter the card
number in Card Guard. A unique code will be created that corresponds
to your credit card number and can only be "broken" by the selected
merchant.

Once you have your code, use it instead of your credit card number
when ordering electonically. This will make it very difficult for
anyone other than the merchant to intercept and use your credit card
number. There is no need to write the code down as it can be
re-created readily by Card Guard. You can use Card Guard with
any number of credit cards and for any number of merchants.

A note about security

This software uses a mathematical algorhythm to encode a series of
digits (i.e. a credit card number) into an alphabetic string of
characters. While this process makes it very difficult for someone
gaining access to your Card Guard code to obtain your credit card
number, it is not impossible. This software does not offer any
guarantee that your credit card information will not be misused.
It does, however, act as a serious deterrent against this type of
fraud. Please see the License Agreement and Disclaimer of Warranty
also.
