      1. INTRODUCTION

Easy Fonts is an utility for Borland programmers: it converts
any TrueType font to the CHR format used by the Borland Graphic
Interface (BGI). If you are a programmer but not an artist and you
don't want to waste your time creating new fonts by hand, this
program is made for you. You'll throw the old Triplex away!

      2. SOFTWARE LICENCE

Easy Fonts is shareware: it is not free but you can try it
freely with no time limit. The trial version of this program is
called "unregistered" and has a restriction: it cannot convert all
      the chars of a font.
You can supply fonts produced by the unregistered version only
with PD or freeware programs not containing advertisements; for any
other kind of program, the registered version of Easy Fonts is
required (see section 6: "Registering Easy Fonts").

      3. WARRANTY

The program is distributed as is. The author (Pino Navato) makes
no warranty of any kind, expressed or implied, including but not
limited to warranties of merchantability or fitness for a
particular purpose, with respect to this software and
documentation. In no event shall the author be liable for any
damages, including lost profits, lost savings, or any other
incidental or consequential damages arising out of the use of or
the inability to use this program.

      4. USING EASY FONTS

It is really easy: choose the TrueType font and its attributes,
choose which characters to convert and choose the resulting
      filename. Done!
Easy Fonts also performs an ANSI-to-ASCII conversion unless you
ask to convert the entire font as is, and unless this conversion
makes no sense (symbol fonts, OEM fonts).
Easy Fonts can be used under Windows 3.1 or above. It can be
easily uninstalled because it doesn't change or create any file in
the Windows directory or its subdirectories.

      5. ABOUT THE CHR STANDARD

      5.1. Chars' dimensions

Chars' dimensions are limited as follows:
      1) origin to cap heigth: max 64 pixels;
      2) origin to bottom heigth: max 64 pixels;
      3) width: max 64 pixels, interspace included (see below).

      5.2. The interspace

The interspace is the space between two consecutive chars. Each
char is coded with its own interspace which increments (or
decrements, if negative) the char's width.
Easy Fonts properly handles both fixed spaced and proportional
spaced fonts: spacing informations are automatically extracted from
the TrueType font and converted along with the chars' shapes.

      5.3. The font header

The CHR standard allows you to insert a description at the
beginning of the font file; it can be specified in the "Options"
dialog box. The header size depends on the size of this string and
it's not fixed by the standard but the old (and buggy) Borland's
font editor accepts only fonts having a 128-byte header. For this
reason the "Options" dialog contains a check box that lets fix the
      header size to 128 bytes.

      5.4. The font name

The name of a CHR font is subject to a curious limitation: it
must be exactly 4 chars long (don't ask me why!).

      6. REGISTERING EASY FONTS

If you like Easy Fonts, you can, for a fee of U.S. $90, obtain a
"password" which is a license to run Easy Fonts unimpeded. You
will not receive a disk with a registered version since you already
have the full program. The password will be calculated on the
basis of a user name of your choice; this name will appear in the
header of the font you'll create.
Please, e-mail me for up-to-date info about accepted payment
methods. My addresses are at the end of this file.

      7. THE DOS VERSION OF EASY FONTS

A DOS version of Easy Fonts is also available (EFONTD20.ZIP).
Actually it hasn't the same features of the Windows one: it can
convert *ANY* graphic font (not only TrueType ones) but the
conversion is semi-automatic and takes a few minutes.
