Chat Mate 1.0 is for translating the dialogues in the Chat room into speech
sound. System requirements are IBM PC or compatible computer, Windows 3.1
or higher, and it needs either WinSpeech 3.0 or Clip&Talk 2.0 Windows
programs as the speech engine. Chat Mate 1.0 works in the chat room of the
AOL (America Online) and WOW (from CompuServe), but does not work in the
main CompuServe System (WinCIM). It has not been tested with other service
systems.

The basic operation of the Chat Mate 1.0 is to monitor the text changes in a
window and post the changed text into the Windows Clipboard for the speech
engine program to talk. It can also be used in places other than the chat
room. For example, to monitor a window with stock quotes change continuously.

To set up the Chat Room 1.0, either run the "setup.exe" from the Windows
system, or just copy all the files into one directory and then create a
program item (shortcut) for the "cmate.exe".

You are free to use, copy, and distribute the Chat Room 1.0 provided that all
the original files stay together and not modified. This program is provided
AS IS without any warranty. The entire risk from the using of this program is
assumed by you. In no event shall PC WholeWare be liable for any damages
arising out of the use of this program.

The speech engine programs (WinSpeech 3.0 or Clip&Talk 2.0) are separated
programs from the Chat Mate 1.0. The freeware version of these programs can
be found on the AOL, CompuServe, or "ftp://users.aol.com/wholeware".

To use the Chat Mate 1.0, follows these steps:

1. Start the speech engine program (WinSpeech 3.0 or Clip&Talk 2.0) first,
and make sure the Clipboard option in the speech engine program is set to
"Auto" mode.

2. Start the Chat Mate 1.0 and the on line service program or the other
program that you wish to monitor. Make sure the chat room or the window
you wish to monitor appears on the screen.

3. Choose "Select" from the Chat Mate 1.0 menu, and the mouse cursor will
change to a hand-shaped cursor. Move the cursor over to the chat room or the
window you wish to monitor and press the left mouse button. After these, the
system should start talking when new text appears.

When you want to monitor another window, just do the step 3 and point the
cursor to a new window.

You can use the control panel in the speech engine program to adjust the
speech volume, tempo, or pitch. You can also control the speech progress of
the speech engine by using hot keys or mouse buttons directly, without
focusing back to the speech engine program. There are two language options
in the speech engine, one for translating punctuation signs and the other for
spelling all-capital words. It is better to turn both options off (leave
blank) for monitoring chat room text.

One problem in Chat Mate 1.0 is that if the chat messages come out too fast,
some may be cut off and not spoken. This can be fixed once we have the
speech engine built into the program. If you feel this program is useful
but is too hard to use or have any other comments or suggestions, please
