ReName.exe

ReName.exe reads ReName.txt file and operates on the directory where it starts up. The ReName.txt file must also be in that directory. The text file can be any length but the first line is the name of the file to be found in the directory and the second line is the name the file will have after running ReName.exe. If there is currently a file with the second name in the directory, it will be written over with the new file. When the files have their new long file names, the running of ReName.exe will delete all the files with new names. That means that you run it once and decide what to do with the created files. After using them to attach to email or move into other directories, you can delete the group by running ReName.exe a final time.

This program allows me to write files to a subdirectory from my 8.3 limited database where each file at first has a cryptic but unique name in the 8.3 format. The files are from each records information. As the files are written the ReName.txt file is written with two lines ... the cryptic unique 8.3 name first and the long file name second. Then after the database has written out all the files with the record information and created two lines each in ReName.txt, it runs ReName.exe which then reads the ReName.txt file and renames the 8.3 to long file names. The long file names are designed to be alphabetically readable with the general format: LastName_FirstName_Info.txt. The directory then becomes a database itself that requires no supporting software.

This software is shareware and please use it until you know you need it and then contact me at richard@animaldoctor.com and tell me what it is worth to you.
