INSTALLATION NOTES AND OPERATING CONSIDERATIONS FOR
THE FUTUREWARE EMAIL POP3 ALERTER (ePAL) APPLICATION PROGRAM

GENERAL
The EMail POP3 Alerter (ePAL) application provides a visual and audio
notification of when email is available for retrieval from a remote email
server using the standard POP3 protocol, without having to have the regular
email client program running, which allows for more efficient computer
resource management. It is primarily intended for installations that are
always connected to a network that has access to an email server using TCP/IP,
such as DSL, Cable Modems, and local intranets. It is a 32-bit program for
Windows 95/98/NT/2000 that runs as a Tray application, with its icon of a
yellow in-box always displayed in the Tray area (generally next to the Task
Bars's time display in the screen's lower right-hand corner).

INSTALLATION
This version of the EMail POP3 Alerter application is distributed as a ZIPed
file, using WinZip 8.0, and encapsulates an InstallShield wizard that can be
started by running the SETUP.EXE program, and includes a standard Windows
UnInstall utility. When unziping this program, the setup and supporting
installation files are placed in the TEMP folder by default, but the ZIPed
file can be placed in, and installed from, any folder. When the EMail POP3
Alerter program is installed, these installation programs and files can be
deleted from the TEMP folder, but MUST NOT be deleted if they are in the same
folder as the installation folder, otherwise the UnInstall utility will not
work properly.

DEFAULT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY
Unless otherwise specified during the installation process, the directory in
which the EMail POP3 Alerter application program is placed will be:

       c:\Program Files\FutureWare\ePAL

This directory will have one executable file, "fwepal.exe", which
encompasses all of the ordinary use processing and administration functions
for the application program. Additionally, the installation directory includes
the following files:

  FWEPAL_LICENSE.TXT
The software license agreement under which the EMail POP3 Alerter
    application can be used
  FWEPAL_README.TXT
    This document
  FWEPAL01.SCG
A configuration file that maintains various settings and configuration
    values chosen by the user
  EPALHELP.HLP, EPALHELP.CNT, EPALHELP.GID
The integrated Help subsystem support files
  FWLIBPKG.DLL
    The standard FutureWare utility library

STARTUP FOLDER
A shortcut to the ePAL program is added to the system's STARTUP folder so that
the program is always available in the system's Tray Icon area, and does not
require a separate desktop short cut, and does not consume real-estate on the
system's Task Bar. The installation program does not require that the system
be re-booted to start the program and put it into the system's Tray icon area.
If the installation's "StartProgram" option is not selected then the ePAL
program will have to be started manually by selecting the "FWePAL" item in the
Start|Programs|StartUp menu list.

SYSTEM REGISTRY
The EMail POP3 Alerter program does not add to or use the system Registry, but
the install program will add an entry to the HKLM\Software hive. This will be
removed by the Un-Install facility. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE REGISTRY CHANGES
MANUALLY.

INITIAL DEFAULT SETTINGS
The POP3 email retrieval protocol, like all Internet protocols, is based on a
simplex client-server model, in which the client must initiate a request to the
server before information transfers can be accomplished. The ePAL program thus
polls the remote email server on a regular basis in order to determine how
many emails are available for retrieval, and then displays this information as
numeric values contained in its icon in the Tray area. In order to do this,
the ePAL program must know how to connect to the remote email server.

The connection information consists of the remote email server's domain name,
the email server's POP3 port number, the logon ID and logon password for the
email account, and optionally the local email client program's executable
filename. By default, the port number is set to 110 (the standard POP3 value),
and the email client executable is set to 'msimn.exe' (i.e., Microsoft
Outlook, Office or Express), and the polling period is set to 60 minutes,
although these default values can be changed as required.

The first time ePAL is run, the Administration screen will appear where the
connection information can be set.

FIRST TIME EPAL IS RUN
When ePAL is run for the first time, a prompt will appear for an optional
logon ID and password that will be used subsequently to access ePAL's
Administration screen. These can be changed in the Administration screen. The
primary purpose for this is to provide system or network administrators a
means of "locking" the connection information to preclude users from modifying
them. The FutureWare KeyRing product can be used to generate and securely
store these logon credentials.

Additionally, the Administration screen will appear where the connection
information can be set.

REFERENCE DOCUMENT
The EMail POP3 Alerter application's operation and administration is described
in the integrated Help subsystem files, located in the same folder as the
executable. This is opened when the application's Help menu item is selected.

LICENSE PURCHASE AND REGISTRATION
A License for the EMail POP3 Alerter (ePAL) application program must be
obtained and registered before the evaluation period expires, afterwhich the
application program's administration and usage will be restricted until it is
subsequently registered. This unlicensed state can be removed at any time by
entering valid "NameKey" "RegistrationKey" values obtained from FutureWare,
either on its secure eCommerce site (which requires a valid credit card), or
by filling out the included form (e.g., with NotePad) in the
FWEPAL_REMITTANCE.TXT file and mailing it with payment to the address
indicated. The procedure for on-line License purchase and registration is
described in detail in the Help subsystem under the headings
"GetFutureWareLicense" and "ApplyFutureWareLicense".

UN-INSTALLING THE EMAIL POP3 ALERTER APPLICATION PROGRAM
The distribution includes an Un-Install facility. To be doubly safe, we
strongly recommend that the EMail POP3 Alerter application is first closed
and not in the system's Tray Icon area before using the system's standard
un-install utility (e.g., the ControlPanel's Add|RemoveProgram item).

If the Windows removal utility warns that there are some components that
haven't been removed, then delete the ePAL folder (e.g., located by default at
C:\Program Files\FutureWare\ePAL.
