Hello!

Thank you for trying Students QuickField - finite-element analysis package
for electrostatics, AC and DC magnetics, current flow, heat transfer and stress
analysis.

You've probably had a chance to use some field analysis packages, and maybe
you asked yourself, why too many of them are so inconvenient, why they
always try to flood your poor HD, why you must browse thousands and
thousands of pages in manuals before analyzing quite a simple problem. We
asked ourselves too. And we decided to prove that a rather complicated
problem could be described in ten minutes and solved in ten seconds, that one
can obtain exactly what he needs from the field picture by pressing several
buttons, that finite element stuff could be handled as easy as a pocket
calculator.

QuickField 4.2 is a native Windows application designed to run on Windows
95/98/NT. To install it you have to run setup.exe and then follow instructions
displayed on screen.

Student's QuickField 4.2 is free software. Distribution limitations are
described in the License Agreement, which is displayed at the installation
procedure.

In this new version you will find many improvements. New ways to define a
problem, new ways to present results - QuickField has become even more
friendly and convenient tool. We hope you will enjoy using it!

In case you already have the experience of QuickField use - here is the short
list of main changes in QuickField 4.2 comparing to the previous version 4.1:

? Total Current (DC magnetics)

It is now possible to define the total current in the conductor as well as the
current density. For plane-parallel problems uniform current density over the
blocks is assumed. When total current is specified for an axisymmetric
problem, you can also specify that the current density is distributed inversely
to the radius. The last option is useful for modeling massive spiral coils,
where inner and outer radii are significantly different.

? Conductors Connected in Series (AC and DC magnetics)

Now you can define several conductors connected in series by applying
common label with special flag to the whole group of blocks. In this case each
block is considered as a separate conductor carrying the same current. This
option is available if you have specified the total current or the applied
voltage.

? Export to DXF File (Model Editor)

The entire model or its selected part can be saved to DXF file. QuickField as
well as many CAD programs can read that file later. This feature gives you
the ability to complete the life cycle of your project: from preliminary sketch
through modeling and refining to the final version.

? Creating a new problem from the existing one (New Problem wizard)

It is possible now to create new problem from the existing one. This means
that all files comprising the model will be copied, and all the options will be
set to the same pattern. Then you may change necessary parameters. This
feature may be useful for the problems there the limited number of parameters
has to be changed systematically (e.g. parametric design).

? Calculator Window (Postprocessor)

Local and integral values are now shown in a single Calculator Window that
is normally docked to the left side of field view. The Calculator Window
gives more consistent way to operate with various postprocessors data. It
supports multiple selection and drag-and-drop capability with new visual
feedback. Look-and-feel is also improved (lines, +signs and bold fonts)
Some local values (vectors, complex quantities) are shown in more detail.
Integral values are automatically recalculated when you change contour of
integration.

? Family of wizards to automate integral calculations (Postprocessor)
New QuickField introduces wizards for calculation of inductance, capacitance
and impedance. They simplify obtaining of most commonly used results, and
in some cases allow avoiding manual creation of integration contour. All the
quantities calculated by wizard are stored in Calculator Window. You can
restart wizard from any stage by double clicking corresponded item in values
tree. If possible, wizard gives you several ways to calculate the desired
parameter.

? Splittable View (Model View and Field View)

Each model view and field view now can be split in up to four panes. This
option is especially useful while defining small geometric part, or analyzing
the field picture in detail.

Please, refer to QuickField Help for detailed explanation of these new features
or changes comparing to versions older than 4.1.

If your problem requires finer mesh - just contact us! We have developed a
much more powerful version of our software. It is able to solve problems with
hundreds of thousands degrees of freedom on any PC within minutes! The
preconditioner based on our original Geometric Decomposition(TM)
technique guarantees very high speed and very weak correlation between the
number of nodes and the required solution time.
