VERSION 3.5

NEW

In version 3.5 mainly playing and recording pronunciations has changed. The
pronunciations are stored in MP3 format now. This means that the wordlists take
a lot less space on your hard disk, while the sound quality is improved as well.

Now you can record series of pronunciations at once. Make sure that there's a
silence of at least one second between two words and Babylonia will
automatically detect where the words are pronounced in a recording. Then you can
easily insert them into your wordlist. For this new function you choose Wordlist
| Record pronunciations....

Because the pronunciations are stored in MP3 now, you can also insert MP3 files
now in addition to the Wav files.

There are three extra wordlists (French, German and Italian) that you can use as
examples.

FIXES

On some computers it was not possible to print wordlists. This problem should be
solved now.

There could be problems with importing or pasting words with pronunciations and
with copying and pasting a large number of words. This problem has been solved
too.

VERSION 3.2

NEW

The find function has been improved and a replace function has been added.
Finding and replacing is done in the find area that is fixed when you open the
find and replace window. If you have selected words, the find area consists of
the selected words. If nothing is selected, the find area consists of the entire
wordlist. Otherwise the find area runs from the current word to the end of the
wordlist.

In the new version you can set an exercise time in Edit | Options... on the
Exercises tab (the options window consists of two tabs now). During an exercise
a clock is ticking along then. At the left bottom of the exercise window you see
how many minutes are left. When the time has passed, you are asked if you want
to stop the exercise. By default a time of 30 minutes is set. That way you could
practise half an hour every day for example.

During an exam you see how many words are left at the left bottom of the window.
When you abort an exam, you are asked for a confirmation, because you can't
continue later where you left off in an exam.

The keyboard layout that you set for the foreign language and your own language,
are automatically selected in fields of the find window, the exercise window and
the exam window, depending on the language in which you can enter text. So after
starting Babylonia you only need to set the keyboard layouts for the foreign
language and possibly for your own language once.

Now you can use a few more keys in the wordlist screen. If you keep Shift
pressed when you press Page Up, Page Down or the cursor keys up or down, you
select entire rows now. With the same keys you can also extend or reduce a
selection. By using Page Up and Page Down you can also go to the first resp.
last word in the list.

The settings in the window where you can set words for a test, are not reset to
the default values anymore each time you open it.

Certain windows have become easier to use with your keyboard.

FIXES

The prints of keyboard layouts have been improved for characters that stick out
to the left. Such characters are moved to the right now, so that they are
printed completely.

The command Edit | Select all didn't work well when a cell in the last, empty
row was selected. Now this command works right.

The number of right and wrong answers in an exam doesn't appear jagged anymore
because of a wrong font.

================================================================================
VERSION 3.1

NEW

The usability has been improved with keys you can use in the wordlist screen.
Now you can use the following keys:
* Cursor keys: with the cursor keys up and down you select the cell above or
below the cell that you have selected now.
* Enter: the function of this key depends on the setting in Edit | Options....
If you have used an older version of Babylonia before, then the Enter key is
the same as before: you go one line down. But you may also set that you go to
the start of the next line when you press Enter. If you keep Shift pressed,
Enter works in the opposite way as set in the options window.
* Tab: with this you go to the next column in the grid where you can enter
  something with your keyboard.
* Shift+Tab: if you keep the Shift key pressed while you press Tab, you go to
the previous column where you can enter something with your keyboard.
* PageUp, PageDown: with these keys you go up or down a whole screen in the
  wordlist.

The command Edit | Select all is functioning a bit differently now. The command
will always have effect as long as not all words are selected. If you're editing
text, then all text in the cell you are editing is selected. But if all text is
already selected, then all words in the list will be selected.

An English-to-English wordlist can be downloaded from the Hofsoft website for
people who prefer to use an example in a language they know.

================================================================================
VERSION 3.0

NEW

In version 3.0 you can print your wordlists. Before a wordlist is printed, you
see a print preview in which you can set which columns you want to print, in
what order, and how wide the columns must be. You can choose from the column
with foreign words, the column with translations in your own language, the
context column and the lesson column.

More support has been added for typing foreign characters. While entering words
you can now press F2 and you will see an overview of the keyboard layout you're
using. By double-clicking the keys you can insert characters. It's also possible
to print an overview of the keyboard layout on paper.

Babylonia has become more user friendly with extra key shortcuts and context
menus. If you want to set words for a test, you can now press Ctrl+T after you
have selected the words. During a test you can use the keys from F5 to F8
instead of the four buttons at the top of the window.

================================================================================
VERSION 2.0

NEW

What has changed most are the tests. At first Babylonia now uses scores in
addition to progresses. The progress is now shown in the wordlist screen by a
black line, while the progress bar itself has been replaced by a score bar. The
score actually indicates the number of correct answers among the last five
answers of a word. If the score bar is green, the score is sufficient. If you
have set a word for testing in both directions, you see two bars in the score
column now. The upper bar indicates the score from the foreign language to your
own language, and the lower bar the score from your own language to the foreign
language.

Version 2.0 has more different ways of testing words. In addition to the
exercise method (that version 1.x used) you can now have Babylonia take an exam.
In an exam a certain number of words is asked and in the end you get a mark
between 1 and 10. A mark under 6 is not sufficient.

In a test window you get more information than in the old version. In the case
of an exercise you can see what score you've got for the word on your screen,
and how far the exercise has progressed in total. During an exam you see the
number of right and wrong answers. There's also an extra field in which you can
type the answer yourself, so that you can compare it with the right answer
better.

You can now add a context in the foreign language for every word. You can also
show the context in a test, possibly as extra help. Contexts can also be read
together with the words and lessons from a text file and they can be exported to
a text file. The text files are composed a bit differently for that purpose.

You can record the pronunciation for every word in the foreign language. Just
like the context you can use the pronunciation in an exercise. There are two
special tests: the listen test and the dictation. In a listen test Babylonia
pronounces the word and you have to give the translation in your own language.
In a dictation you have to think of what word has been pronounced (and how you
spell it).

The menu command Wordlist | Sort... has disappeared, but you can still sort a
wordlist. Now you can sort on every column, simply by clicking in the column
heading. Although sorting can be undone now, you are still asked for a
confirmation.

You can move the columns and change their sizes. But the columns with the words
in the foreign language and in your own language have to stay the first two
columns. And you can only change the size of columns where you can enter a text.

Now you can easier browse through the wordlist with your keyboard. With Page Up
and Page Down and the up and down cursor keys, you can browse up and down now.

================================================================================
VERSION 1.1

NEW

Version 1.1 has got a new setup program and a new uninstall program. Because of
this installing and removing Babylonia has been improved and you can enter your
registration code already at setup.

FIXES

In version 1.0 the random choices made in exercises were not always very random.
For example it could occur that you alternately had to translate a series of
words from the foreign language to your own language and then a series of words
from your own language to the foreign language. In version 1.1 more random
choices are made in exercises.

If you open a wordlist of which a font is not installed or a font does not
support the desired character set, Babylonia asks you if you want to change the
font and/or the character set.
In the window where you can do this, version 1.0 always filled in the default
character set and if you changed the character set, it was not changed in the
wordlist.
In version 1.1 the character set that's stored in the wordlist is filled in and
if you change the character set, it's also changed in the wordlist.

In version 1.1 there's no effect anymore when you click in the last row in the
wordlist screen while that row is only partly visible. In version 1.0 clicking
in a partly visible last row could have unintentional effects.

When in version 1.0 a wordlist was opened from Windows, for example by double-
clicking a wordlist file, the title bar of Babylonia showed the short filename
of at most 8 characters (sometimes abbreviated with ~1). In version 1.1 the long
filename is shown in the title bar.

In version 1.0 selecting a file type in the Import dialogue could influence the
selected file type in the Open dialogue. In version 1.1 this doesn't happen
anymore.
