Perfect Pitch Version 1.4 01/10/2000

INTRODUCTION

Thank you for trying Perfect Pitch. This product is designed to help you to remember the pitches
of the notes in the equally-tempered Western Music scale, as used on keyboard instruments. If
successful, you will be able to name any note played, an ability known as Perfect or Absolute
Pitch.

USING THE PERFECT PITCH APPLICATION

When you start the application, you are presented with a window that comprises a one-octave
piano keyboard and various controls.

Playing a Note

To play a note on the piano keyboard, simply click with the mouse. The name of the note is
displayed in the panel below the keyboard.

Changing the Instrument

To change the instrument on which notes are played, select another number in the Voice box.

Changing the Volume

To change the volume, move the Volume slider to the desired position.

Learning a Note

To learn the sound of a note:

1. On the piano keyboard, click the note you want to learn.

2. Select the Listen option button, which appears beneath the Start and Stop buttons under the
    piano.

3. Click the Start button.

A random (12-tone) sequence of notes is played continuously. Each time the note you selected
is played, its corresponding key is highlighted on the piano, and its name appears in the
panel below the piano. This helps you to reinforce the association between the sound of the
    note and its name.

4. To change the speed at which the notes are played, move the Speed slider in the bottom-right
    of the window.

5. To stop playing at any time, click the Stop button.

6. When you feel that you can remember the note, click the Test option button to begin the test.

Taking the Test

1. To begin the test, click the Test option button. If you have stopped note playing, click
the Start button to start the test.

2. Whenever you hear the selected note played, quickly click its corresponding note on the
    piano keyboard.

    - If you correctly identified the note, the test continues.

    - If you failed to click a key when the note was played, the message Missed appears over the
piano keyboard, and the test stops.

    - If you failed to click the correct key when the note was played, the message Wrong appears
over the piano keyboard, and the test stops.

3. When the test stops because you have made a mistake, you can either:

    - Click the Start button to re-start the test.

    - Click the Stop button to completely exit the test and clear the Missed or Wrong message.

4. When you want to stop, click the Stop button to end the test.
