1. Introduction

Solar System screensaver is an exciting addition to your Windows system and will
provide hours of entertainment, in addition to protecting your monitor against
burn-out. Solar System screensaver includes stunningly rendered images of the
planets and Moon together with smooth animation of the different phases and is
fully configurable, including colour (ability to apply a colour filter), size,
and starting phase.

Solar System screensaver may be used free of charge for 30 days, during which an
Unregistered message will occasionally appear on screen. If you wish to use
Solar System screensaver for more than 30 days then you must register this
software.

The cost of registration is $19.99 and payable by credit card, bank transfer, or
cash. Further details are given in the registration section of this help file
and also at the Solar System screensaver homepage at
http://www.KyoSoft.com/screen/index.htm

NOTE: The current version of Solar System screensaver has been tested on Windows
95/98/NT/2000 systems prior to release.

2. Installation

The main programme files for Solar System screensaver can be installed by
running the installation programme on your system. This will install the
screensaver in your Windows directory and also place a link to the screensaver
help file on your desktop.

NOTE: Additional support files also need to be installed on your computer before
Solar System screensaver can run properly. Most people already have these
support files installed on their computer. The names of the support files are
msvbvm60.dll and mfc40.dll and they should be in the System folder of your
Windows directory.

To check whether msvbvm60.dll and mfc40.dll are already installed on your
computer, do the following:

(i) Click on the Start button on your Windows desktop.
(ii) Select the Find option in the pop-up menu.
(iii) Select the Files or Folders... option from the submenu.
(iv) Type "msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes) in the Named box and click on the
Find Now button.
(v) If the file is shown in the Results box then it means that msvbvm60.dll is
already installed on your computer.
(vi) Repeats step (iv) and (v) for the case of mfc40.dll.

If you find that msvbvm60.dll is not installed on your computer then please
download and install any ONE of the following files using your normal Internet
browser:

screensaver can be activated in the following way:

(i) Click on the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop.
(ii) Click on the Control Panel icon in your My Computer folder.
(iii) Click on the Display icon in your Control Panel folder.
(iv) Choose the Screen Saver option from choices available in the Display
settings.
(v) Choose Solar System from the pull-down list of available screensavers.
(vi) Solar System screensaver is now activated for your system.

Although Solar System screensaver works fine with the default options, you may
wish to configure the screensaver to your own preferences. Configuration of
Solar System screensaver is detailed in the next section.

4. Customising the screensaver

In order to configure Solar System screensaver you will need to open the
configuration screen by following these steps:

(i) Click on the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop.
(ii) Click on the Control Panel icon in your My Computer folder.
(iii) Click on the Display icon in your Control Panel folder.
(iv) Choose the Screen Saver option from choices available in the Display
settings.
(v) Click on the Settings... button in the Display option screen.
(vi) You will be presented with the Solar System screensaver configuration
screen.

The configuration screen contains a number of options that can be tailored to
personalise your copy of Solar System screensaver. These are as follows:

4.1. Randomise starting phase
Selecting this option will choose a random starting phase each time that Solar
System screensaver is initialised.

4.2. Starting phase
This option allows the user to select a phase that is used each time Solar
System screensaver is activated. Note that this option is not available if the
Randomise Starting Phase option is selected.

4.3. Image size
Selecting this option changes the size of the moon image shown on your monitor.
This value can vary between 10 (smallest) and 100 (largest) and can be changed
by either holding and dragging the slider with your mouse, clicking either side
of the slider, or using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. Note
that values close to 100 may result in slow animation speed of the planet
depending on your computer specifications.

4.4. Phase cycle time
This option allows the time to be set in minutes for one complete cycle of the
Solar System screensaver phases, i.e., from "New Moon" to "Full Moon" and back
again to "New Moon". The value of Phase cycle time may be varied between 1 and
120 minutes and can be changed by either holding and dragging the slider with
your mouse, clicking either side of the slider, or using the left and right
arrow keys on your keyboard.

4.5. Shadow brightness
Selecting this option allows the areas in shadow to be set. Values range from 0
(darkest) to 100 (brightest) and can be changed by either holding and dragging
the slider with your mouse, clicking either side of the slider, or using the
left and right arrow keys on your keyboard.

4.6. Apply colour filter
This option allows a user-defined colour filter to be applied to the image. The
colour filter currently selected is shown in the rectangle below the slider
controls. You can change the currently selected filter colour by moving the
slider controls for the red, green, and blue filter components. For example, the
default option applies a pastel pink to the image. In general, light pastel
colours work best for the colour filter.

4.7. Randomise colour filter
If this option is selected then a different colour filter is applied to the
image each time that the screensaver is started. Note that this option is not
available unless Apply colour filter is selected.
