Veritel Screen Saver User Guide
Release Version 1.0 (January 20, 1999)

Product Introduction

The Veritel Screen Saver is a voice identity protected
screen saver program for the Windows 95 and 98 operating
systems. Unlike regular password protected screen savers,
this screen saver will ask the user to answer some
challenging questions, and match the user's voice with
a pre-recorded voice sample for identity verification,
before the normal screen will resume.

Voice verification provides a more secure alternative
to conventional passwords, which can be stolen, lost
or forgotten.

The user can configure alternative security options,
like user profile questions, one time passwords, etc,
so that the legitimate user can safely return to the
normal screen if the user is unable to voice verify
due to laryngitis or some other unforeseen occurrence.

How to Install the Veritel Screen Saver:

If your copy of the Veritel Screen Saver is on a
CD-ROM, follow these instructions to install on
Windows 95 on 98 operation systems:

Insert the Veritel Screen Saver CD into the CD-ROM
drive. It should automatically start the setup. If
not, click on the Windows "Start" button located in
the Windows taskbar. Select Run. Type "d:\setup"
where "d" is your CD-ROM drive, and Press Enter.
Follow the Veritel Screen Saver Setup Program
installation instructions.

If your copy of the Veritel Screen Saver is in a
self-extracting ZIP file (for example, SCREEN.EXE),
you can install it as follows: Click on the Windows
"Start" button located in the Windows taskbar and
select Run. Type the file location and full file
name (for example, C:\DNLOAD\SCREEN.EXE). Press
the Enter key, and follow the prompts.

Once the screen saver installation is finished, the
screen saver configuration screen runs automatically,
allowing you to do initial setup of the screen saver.
At any time, you can always come back to the same
configuration screen by right clicking the mouse on
an empty location of the screen, and select:
	->Properties->Screen Saver->Settings

Audio configuration:

There is an "Audio Configuration" button in the
screen saver configuration dialog box. You need
to go through the audio configuration procedure
before doing other configurations. This procedure
determines that your audio recording and playback
devices are working properly, and helps you to
set the microphone volume level properly. Once
you have done the audio configuration, the proper
audio settings will be remembered and you do not
need to repeat it in the future.

Enrolling your voice:

You have to enroll your voice samples before the voice
protection function of the Veritel Screen Saver can be used.
Click on the "Add User" button, entering a new user name
(Please note: User names must contain letters and numbers
only). Click on the "Start Enrolling" button to begin the
voice enrollment process.

The voice enrollment process may take a few minutes and you
will be asked a total of 20 questions. Try to answer all
questions in a regular and consistent manner.

After the voice enrollment process is concluded, the
system automatically leads user to the User Security
Settings dialog box. You can also come back to the same
dialog box by clicking on the button "User Security
Settings". Please note that every time when you attempt
to enter the User Security Settings dialog box, it will
ask you to verify your identity first.

User Security Settings:

The User Security Settings dialog box allows you to change
the voice verification threshold and test your voice against
the threshold. It will also allow you to set up alternative
ways to pass the identity verification process, including
the User Profile Questions, in case you are unable to verify
using your voice. It is recommended that you configure a few
User Profile Questions and provide answers, so that you will
not end up being locked out of your computer.

The User Security Settings contains two pages: the User
Authentication Settings and the Alternative Settings.
They are explained below.

Voice Authentication Settings:

After voice enrollment, you may press the "Test Voice" button
to do a voice verification test. You may adjust the security
threshold accordingly if you pass the test with a score much
higher than the threshold, or if you fail the test by scoring
below the threshold. Recommended setting of the threshold is
60, the "Default Threshold".

You may also set the number of "Valid Inputs" needed to pass
the voice verification process. The minimum number is 1 and
the maximum is 4, which means you will have to successfully
answer the specified number of questions to voice verify.

Alternate Settings:

There are three checkboxes you will need to set in the Alternate
Authentication Settings of the Veritel Screen Saver. You must
click on the OK button after you finish to save the changes.
If you click on the cancel button, the setup screen exits
without saving the changes.

The three checkboxes are described below:

Enable Use of User Profile Questions - Allows you to provide
manually entered answers to at least four questions using the
"User Profile" window. These questions will provide the
secondary means of accessing your computer in the case voice
verification cannot be used. Steps to complete "User Profile":

1) Put a check in the box next to the question you want to answer.

2) Enter the answer to each question as it is displayed. You
can enter up to 15 characters for each answer.

3) To go back and change an answer after you have entered it,
click the "Edit" button.

4) To create your own User Profile Questions, click the "New"
button.

Enable One Time Password - Use password in addition to voice
verification - By checking the "Enable One Time Password"
button, the Veritel Screen Saver will create a one time
password, which is good for only one use. Once you login
with this password, another password must be issued to login
with a one time password again. This is intended only as a
backup to the voice verification method.

Security Options:

Lock out Account - Allows you to lock up your computer (you
can specify the lock out time period) if a user fails to
voice verify after a predetermined number of attempts (you
can specify the number of attempts).

Hide-User ID - Allows you to hide the user name that is
entered into the User Administration box.

Voiceprint Management:

This feature allows you to re-enroll and/or update your voiceprint
and can be activated by clicking on the Voiceprint Management
button on the configuration dialog box.

You may choose to re-enroll if you wish to change your answers
to any of the questions. You may choose to update your voiceprint
if you feel that your verification success rate has dropped
significantly. As opposed to re-enrolling, you will be asked each
of the five questions only once.

Enable Voice Protection:

Before saving the settings and exit from the Configuration
of the screen saver, be sure to check this checkbox for the
voice protection to be activated. Uncheck it if you want to
deactivate the protection.

After completing the voice enrollment process, you have
successfully installed the Veritel Screen Saver onto your
computer.

Please note: this version allows multiple users to enroll
their voice samples using different usernames.

Activation of Veritel Screen Saver:

The Veritel Screen Saver can be activated under two separate
circumstances. It can be activated by simply double clicking on
the Veritel Screen Saver shortcut that is placed on your desktop.
It can also be activated by setting it as the default screen saver
and allowing for the user-designated idle time to pass.

Pass the Veritel Screen Saver protection:

If you attempt to deactivate the Veritel Screen Saver by
mouse or keyboard activity, a voice verification screen will
pop up and the legitimate user will have to voice verify to
get back to the regular screen.

The Veritel Screen Saver will begin voice verification
immediately, using the same username as last used. If the
voice verification is successful, the regular screen resumes.
If voice verification fails, a "Use Password" button shows up,
allowing you the option of either attempting voice verification
again, or if you checked the "Allow Password" checkbox during
set up, you may use the manually entered password.
