4.0 Troubleshooting
=====================================

If you experience difficulties while using Jotter, check to ensure your system conforms to the minimum System and Hardware requirements.

-------------------------------------
4.1 Known Problems
-------------------------------------

4.1.1 Form Filling issue:
-------------------------------------
Jotter not Completely Filling in a Form
When you use Jotter to fill in a form on a Web page, Jotter tries to recognize that page. If the Web site you are visiting has not been Jotter enabled, Jotter will various strategies to fill in that form. If Jotter does not fill in a form, the Drag and Drop list will appear to assist you with manually filling it in.

4.1.2 Ticker issues:
-------------------------------------
When not connected to the Internet, Ticker headlines not updated
When you are not connected to the Internet, the Ticker will be unable to Update itself. The Ticker headlines are received from the Internet while you use Jotter.

Font cut off in ticker display
Customizing your ticker using a large font may result in some of the characters to be cut off. This does not affect the functioning of the ticker. The maximum font size that can be used in the ticker is 12 point. Points are relative units of measurement. Some fonts are larger at 12 points than others.

4.1.3 Netscape issues:
-------------------------------------
Drag and Drop list
The Drag and drop list does not work with Netscape

Netscape Preferences
Javascript must be enabled for Jotter to work properly. Select Preferences from the Edit menu. Select advanced and click Enable Java and Enable Java script.

Filling in Forms
On some Web pages (using "frames") Jotter will not immediatly fill in your form. To fill in the form, click on the form you wish to fill in, and select Open in new window. Try to fill in the form with Jotter again.

Conflicts with other program
NeoPlanet inhibits Jotter from filling in forms for Netscape users.

Proxy Servers and Filling in Forms
If your Netscape Communucator is set to work with a Proxy (Automatic proxy configuration or Manual proxy configuration), you must configure it in order for Jotter to fill in forms. To edit your proxy configuration 1) From the Edit menu, choose Preferences. 2) Click the Advanced category and choose Proxies. 3) Jotter requires that you add the exception 127.0.0.1 (your own computer) to your proxy settings. If you have Manual proxy configuration selected, add 127.0.0.1 in the Exception box (use commas to seperate multiple hostnames). If you have Automatic proxy configuration selected, your Systems Adminitrator will need to add the exception 127.0.0.1 for you.

4.1.4 Updater Limitations
------------------------------------
If you are using Windows 95, Jotter needs to have Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher to be able to automatically update. Anything below Internet Explorer 4.01, the updater will not be able to provide the additional upgrades. To remedy this, download the latest version of Internet Explorer at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/default.asp or else visit the website at http://www.jotter.com/download/download.html to download new releases of Jotter.

4.1.5 Java virtual machine Error=8000ffff
------------------------------------
An error (Couldn't execute Java virtual machine Error=8000ffff)results from problems which have occured in the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, to correct this, you must reinstall the JVM. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and "Microsoft Virtual Machine" should be listed under Critical Updates, if not, click on the "Show Installed Updates" button. Click the checkbox beside Microsoft Virtual Machine, and then click on the Download button.

4.1.6 "Fatal exception error in VXD ZM97V10(01) + 00007C77".
------------------------------------
This error stems from a known software conflict between Jotter 2000 and
ZipMagic 98 from Mijemix Corp., a zip utility that runs in the background. The workaround at present is to unload ZipMagic and Jotter will then run properly. We are looking into a fix for this bug.

4.1.7 Miscellaneous issues:
-------------------------------------

Help
Jotter's help system requires you to have Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher) installed on your computer. You can however, view the same help system, on our Web site.

4.3 Frequently Asked Questions
-------------------------------------
#1 - Q. I use Netscape for my internet browser, am connected to the internet
through @HOME, a firewall or proxy server, and my ticker won't update.

A. If only Netscape is configured to access the firewall / proxy server,
the internet address of the proxy server must also be entered in your Internet
Options settings. To get there go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet (Options)
and click on the Connections tab. If you have Internet Explorer 4, click on "connect to
the internet through a proxy server" and then type in the internet address of the
firewall / proxy server. If you have Internet Explorer 5, click on LAN Settings, then
enter your Proxy server internet address into the correct area. If you are on an office
network, and are unsure of anything, ask your systems administrator for assistance.

#2 - Q. I tried to start Jotter and got an error message saying: Couldn't execute
Java virtual machine Error=8000ffff.

A. This error results from problems which have occurred in the Microsoft Java
Virtual Machine, to correct this, you must reinstall the JVM. Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and "Microsoft Virtual Machine" should
be listed under Critical Updates, if not, click on the "Show Installed
Updates" button. Click the checkbox beside Microsoft Virtual Machine, and
then click on the Download button.

#3 - Q. Norton AntiVirus Auto Detect incorrectly detects a macro virus during
install of the Java Virtual Machine upgrade. What is happening and what should I do?

A. Auto Detect senses the WM NiceDay macro virus, but of 0 bytes in size.
This will not cause any problems, as long as Norton Antivirus is told to
ignore the file and the install continues.

#4 - Q. I get the following error when starting Jotter: "com.jotter.platform.MQException:
Some of the jotter files are missing or corrupt. at com/jotter/platform/Platform.loadState
at com/jotter/platform/Platform.initialize at Jotter.main" and every time I start Jotter
I have to create a new profile.

A. This error is the result of Jotter not being able to access encryption
on your computer. One cause of this is the Windows available from some
countries (i.e. France) does not contain the ability to encrypt files on your
computer. We are working on a solution to this problem, and should have a fix soon.

#5 - Q. When I try to start up Jotter I get this message: Jotjview caused an invalid
page fault in module kernel32.dll. What do I do?

A. Do you have McAfee Uninstaller installed on you computer? There is currently
a conflict with Jotter and a program that installs along with McAfee Uninstaller
called CyberMedia Agent. This program runs in your system tray and monitors programs
installing. The solution is to close the CyberMedia Agent before starting Jotter. We are
working on a solution to this problem, and should have a fix soon.
