DESCRIPTION:

When someone queries a major search engine using a keyword related to your site's products or services, does your page appear in the top 10 matches or is it your competition? If you're listed, but not within the first 10 to 20 matches, you lose, no matter how many engines you submitted your site to. Ranking well on the major search engines should be the keystone on which you build your Web Marketing Strategy, bringing an unlimited supply of free, targeted traffic to your Web site.

Introducing WebPosition Gold 'WebRank Genie', a suite of utilities aimed at removing the mystery from search engine submissions. WebRank Genie is the first and only product to combine all the following features designed to launch your Web site to the top of the search results.

PAGE GENERATOR: creates HTML "doorway" pages based on keywords and details you enter about your business. This gives you a head start in heading to the top of the search list. They also act as alternate entrances to your Web site, giving potential visitors more ways to find you.

PAGE CRITIC: supplies expert, custom-tailored 'PLAIN ENGLISH' advice and extensive help on how to optimize each of your new or existing Web pages. Utilizing our huge knowlege base built up over 7 years, Page Critic knows each search engine's unique personality and how to build TOP ranking pages for each without spamming or abusing the index.

UPLOAD MANAGER: remembers all the doorway Web pages you created, changed, or added in the quest for a TOP 10 position. It's a goof-proof way to make sure new chart-climbing pages get uploaded to your Web site.

SUBMITTER: will submit any pages you choose to the most important search engines. Resubmitting can sometimes provide an extra bump up the charts, so the Submitter can be scheduled to re-submit regularly. It even follows-up to verify a site was indexed by the expected date.

REPORTER... checks your site's positions in the major search engines. Find out in minutes, rather than hours, how you rank on every keyword or phrase that is important to you, on all the major engines. Six different management reports provide more valuable information than any other product.

TRAFFIC ANALYZER... tracks your visitors and where they came from automatically without the need to download server log files or buy extra software. Traffic Analyzer answers questions like: "What keywords are people searching for to find my site?" or "Which search engines send me the most traffic?" and more! Information gathered by the Traffic Analyzer can later be used with the Page Critic to create even more focused pages. This will help insure continued success while giving you measurable results for tracking the amount of free advertising you generated.

SCHEDULER... activates the Reporter daily, weekly, or monthly to automatically check your Web site's positions. You'll know immediately if a site stays on TOP, falls in rank, or falls out of the index altogether. This allows you to release a new doorway page or re-optimize an existing one before sales start dropping. Submitting can also be automated by the scheduler.

Version History:
December 15th, 2000 Version 1.50.7

Enhancements:

1.	Compatibility with submitting to Infoseek/Go has been restored. However, you'll now need to fill in the additional Web site title and phone number fields on the first tab of the submitter for all your existing missions.
2.	Infoseek/Go has been split into two engine options on the various WebPosition modules. We chose to do this since Go.com has two distinct search results: The Proven Picks results that are listed as the first set of matches on most searches. This is a reviewed directory of sites similar to Yahoo or Looksmart. The second set of displayed results (Web Results) are derived from the Infoseek engine. The rankings for these results are based on the content of your page and other factors. Monitoring and obtaining high rankings on both Proven Picks and Web Results is important.

Fixes:

1.	Support for Iwon's new Java format has been added.
2.	Compatibility with non-Socks proxy servers that require a user name and password to be entered before connecting has been restored. If you were able to connect in versions 1.50.1 or earlier but not in later versions, try double checking all your settings and then running this updated version. If you still experience any problems, please contact our support department or see the Troubleshooting section of the help file.
3.	Occasional mission lock ups caused from incomplete files being returned by the search engine has been fixed.

4.	Fixed a problem where the Page Critic Analysis table displayed inaccurate frequency and word counts for the body area when analyzing and averaging the Top X ranked pages for a given keyword. This problem did not affect the calculation of frequency and weight for Top Averages, single page analysis, or the plain-English advice sections of the product. If you optimized pages based on the numbers of the Top X page averages, then it's recommended you re-analyze the page and double check the numbers for the body area.

5.	Other miscellaneous issues have been addressed.

Many thanks to all our loyal customers who report these problems! We know your time is valuable, which is why it remains our primary goal to produce the most accurate and stable product possible.

November 14, 2000 Version 1.50.4

Enhancement:

1.	When using the Select button in the Submitter to add URLs to the list of URLs available for submission, you can now hold the shift can down and highlight multiple files at once in the selection dialog box. This makes it much more efficient to in adding multiple files to the selection list.

Fixes:

1.	This version restores the submitter selection method to the way it worked in 1.50.1 and earlier. Most people find the old method of selecting URLs easier.
2.	An intermittent bug in the Page Critic using the Top XX calculation caused the body text words and frequency statistics to be reported higher than they actually were. This has been corrected. If you frequently make use of the TOP XX averages for optimizing your pages, you may want to re-analyze your pages to make sure they are within recommended limits.

3.	A problem where the program would randomly unload has been corrected.
4.	Other reported issues have been resolved.

October 27, 2000 Version 1.50.3

Enhancements:

1.	Reporter searches are up to TWICE as fast as prior versions when using high speed connections (i.e., 128Kps or greater). Performance is about the same for 56Kps or slower connections. Connections may also be more reliable in general, resulting in fewer failed searches. You may also find Submitter mission performance to be better on high speed connections.
2.	The Submitter now has a new checkbox to allow you to limit submissions to only 1 URL per day per engine regardless of the limits of each search engine. Some search engine consultants believe that limiting submissions to one URL per day is safer and will actually get you listed faster than submitting the maximum recommended limits. You may check this box and then schedule a mission to run daily so that one URL will be submitted per day automatically. If you've had any trouble getting your site listed in the expected amount of time, try this feature!

3.	Socks 4 and Socks 5 proxy protocols are now supported on the Connections window. Select one of these if you are unable to connect using WebPosition and your network uses a Socks proxy.
4.	The log report now lists Reporter mission times in hours, minutes, and seconds rather than just in seconds for easier readability.
5.	The Upload Manager now has a checkbox to remove archived report links from the menu page which is useful for consultants who post results for viewing by their clients. Therefore, you can now automatically remove archived report links from the menu page before uploading them to your Web site for viewing by clients.

Upgrade Note: We still continue to focus the bulk of our development efforts on version 2 of WebPosition Gold. Therefore, most of the enhancements we've been working on you've not yet seen. This much anticipated upgrade will include support for dozens, if not hundreds of new requested features. We'll post additional news as it becomes available!

Fixes:

1.	Netscape compatibility in the Reporter has been restored.
2.	Nearly every reported bug over the last several months has been corrected in this version. There are too many items to list here. Suffice it to say, accuracy and reliability in all modules of the program have been improved. Most fixes were infrequent or obscure in nature. If you find a bug that has not been fixed, please e-mail us and let us know! We are very serious about maintaining a reliable and bug-free product.

July 12, 2000 Version 1.50.1

1.	URL Verification report now display Unknown for Snap submission dates since Snap is submitted manually and not by the software.
2.	Some minor accuracy issues in the Page Critic have been fixed including where the word count for the title or meta tags was sometimes off a little.
3.	Rare date related bug with the scheduler is fixed.
4.	Various other reported bugs have been fixed. Most of them are very rare scenarios.

June 17, 2000 Version 1.40.8 1.50.0

1.	A bug with certain date formats caused reports to be archived in June with an invalid year like 1905. This occurred on the links at the bottom of the menu.htm page of the Reporter results if you have archiving turned on. The results were accurately archived, but the report dates displayed on this page were sometimes incorrect. This should now be fixed.
2.	Version 1.40.8 had a bad template file for the Page Generator causing all default pages to be generated with a black background and magenta text. This has been corrected.

3.	The Alert report now has a new table to show positions that you had that later dropped completely out of the top 30 or top XX matches. In the past, the Alert report showed positions that dropped, but only if they remained in the top XX matches that were scanned.
4.	A problem with adding all pages (rather than just HTML pages) to the Submitter when using the Add by Date feature has been fixed.
5.	Various other rare problems have been corrected.

June 1, 2000 Version 1.40.6 1.40.7

1.	Occasional discrepancy between the Concise report and the Page & Keyword Report in regard to the Position Change column has been corrected in 1.40.7.
2.	Accuracy of the TOP XX analysis in Page Critic has been improved.
3.	Fixed a lock up running certain missions from the scheduler.
4.	Rare accuracy problems in the Page Critic have been fixed including calculating prominence in the body area.
5.	URL verification compatibility with new Lycos format is fixed.
6.	Rare problem with the Trend Report is fixed.

7.	Rare problem with Page Generator and generating meta tags is fixed.
8.	Other miscellaneous problems have been corrected.

April 27th Version 1.40.1 - 1.40.5

1.	Fixes a scheduler, submitter, and trend report bug introduced in 1.40.0.
2.	Enhances competitive analysis report to work properly regardless of whether the compared domains include the "www." or not.
3.	Correct submitter verification error occurring on a small percentage of servers.
4.	The Reporter no longer reports errors on adult keywords on Goto.com.
5.	Fixes an error when the output directory in Reporter is changed.
6.	Fixes an occasional problem of truncating portions of keywords when generating meta tags in the Page Generator.

April 9th, 2000 Version 1.40.0

1.	Open Directory compatibility has been restored in the Reporter.
2.	Over 30 reported issues have been addressed in this version. Most items were to fix errors that occurred under obscure conditions. A few enhancements were made to make the program more user-friendly. For example, if you listed duplicate keywords in the Reporter in previous versions, a message would appear asking you to remove the duplications. This new version will automatically remove the duplicates for you.

3.	Issues with the scheduler have been addressed to avoid problems with foreign date formats and to support longer path names.
4.	Accuracy of the last position column in the Reporter has been improved.
5.	The Page Generator default template has been revised to no longer generate pages with 'boiler-plate' phrases that are the same for all pages. This has been done to avoid possible discrimination on AltaVista and potentially other engines. It's recommended any existing pages you have that contain phrases on the following URL be revised:

http://www.webpositiongold.com/critichelp/avdoorway.htm

The Page Critic will also warn you for any pages it analyzes containing those phrases.

6.	The last submission date column in the URL verification report is now accurate for engines that "share" the same submission date such as Inktomi based engines like HotBot, AOL, and Goto.com.
7.	Support for longer URLs in all modules of the program has been added.
8.	Support for the creation of network paths like \\server\c\mydirectory\ has been added to all modules.
9.	Page Critic advice has been fine-tuned to work better in certain scenarios. In addition, prominence for the body area should now be calculated correctly in all cases.

As always, we're open to your feedback on how to improve the product. Our goal is to continually improve WebPosition Gold to meet your needs.

December 29, 1999 Version 1.30.9

1.	Reporter now multi-tasks more effectively so that it does not demand full use of the computer when entering the generating reports phase of a mission. In the past for very large missions, some people thought that the Reporter may have locked up when in fact it had not.
2.	Reporter speed has been improved substantially so that it is now comparable to version 1.30.7 and earlier.

December 21st, 1999 Version 1.30.8

1.	The search engines are being a real pain in the backside this month. This update corrects a compatibility issue with HotBot's latest format where they are outputting technically invalid HTML. Also fixes some compatibility issues on other engines. We apologize for the frequent updates in the last couple weeks.

December 14th, 1999 Version 1.30.7

1.	Fixed intermittent "printsearchmatches" error in Reporter.

December 10th, 1999 Version 1.30.6

1.	Fixed compatibility issue with Netscape search engine.
2.	Fixed display problem on submitter where last submit date did not display for HotBot.
3.	Support for NorthernLight.com has replaced PlanetSearch (now dead search engine).
4.	Fixed advice in Page Critic where the total frequency and word count range recommendation sometimes did not correspond to the sum of the individual areas.
5.	Many other minor issues addressed to improve reliability.

November 5, 1999 Version 1.30.5

Fixed:

1.	Several problems that escaped notice for quite some time with customizing reports on the 2nd tab of the Upload Manager have been fixed.
2.	Problems with certain customers being unable to access the new engines in version 1.30 in the Page Generator and Page Critic has been corrected.

November 1, 1999 Version 1.30.4

Fixes:

1.	Fixed accuracy issue with Goto.com in Reporter.
2.	Fixed error that occurred occasionally in the Scheduler.
3.	Fixed problem with Directory Submission button where it did not always load the browser after being clicked.
4.	Other miscellaneous problems corrected.

October 21, 1999 Version 1.30

Enhancements:

1. Support for 5 additional major search engines/directories:

Open Directory
Netscape
Google
GoTo.com
Yahoo "Web Pages" via Inktomi

Support for these engines has been added to all the appropriate modules such as Page Generator, Page Critic, Submitter, Reporter, and Traffic Analyzer. This brings the total engines supported to 18! Always keep in mind that it's the major engines you want to focus your positioning efforts on, and not the so called "hundreds" of link lists, no-name directories, and obscure search engines. We've tried to be selective in our additions to add more of the largest, highest traffic sites.

2. The Page Critic advice has been improved and fine-tuned for all engines. We now recommend changes to your page based on the analysis of the top 5 ranking Web pages rather than the top 10 pages to gain a stronger focus while still maintaining statistical integrity.

In addition, we now exclude pages from the Top Averages that obviously do not deserve the ranking achieved. If a page does not include any repetitions of the keyword/phrase in its content, then it is ignored. The assumption is made that the content of the page has changed since the engine last spidered it, IP stealthing/cloaking has been used, or something else has occurred outside the norm.

To further increase the accuracy of the Page Critic advice, pages that are ranked by purely external factors (versus page content) are excluded from the content averages. For example, pages ranked solely by DirectHit, or that appear because of a reviewed directory listing, are skipped.

These changes, and others, make the Page Critic an even smarter tool than before. We expect this to improve your odds even further of gaining those coveted top 10 positions. As always, let us know what you think!

3. Networks that require proxy user names and passwords to be entered before accessing the Web are now supported in WebPosition Gold.
4.	The Page Generator can now output completely customizable doorway pages. Finally, you can whip out doorway pages that look just as good as any other page on your site. The pages will still include the major elements needed to rank well, custom-tailored to the preferences of each search engine. On the new Template tab of the Page Generator, you can now customize the background color, font color, image, etc. You can customize every element of a "template" which can be based on the layout of your home page or any other page of your site. You can even create multiple templates, each tailored for a particular Web site or search engine.

5.	Help files now reference our new Keyword Generator service at:
http://www.webposition.com/keywordgenerator.htm

Hit F1 in the help and select Choosing the Right Keywords for complete instructions on using the generator to target the best keywords. If you target the wrong keywords, all your search engine marketing efforts will be in vain!

Fixes in this version:

1.	Scheduler no longer auto-selects all URLs before running a mission. Instead, it only auto-selects them IF all URLs in the mission are currently de-selected (i.e., completed) and you have the auto-select checkbox on. This feature is useful if you want to run the same mission every week or month. That way once it completes all submissions successfully, it will re-select them on the next "go around" and submit again.
2.	Many other problems reported over the last couple months have been corrected.

August 6th, 1999 Version 1.10.9

Enhancements:

1.	Replaced LinkStar (now a dead engine) with Snap.com. New guide on how to properly submit to Snap.com has been added in the Submitter Directory tab.
2.	Submitter can now auto-select all URLs in a mission on each run so that the same mission can be ran multiple times without re-highlighted URLs after each successful run.
3.	Downloading updates no longer requires downloading the file in your browser and then running it manually. This version will now automatically download a new update exe after prompting you and will then run the update setup after its been downloaded.

4.	New help links have been added to many of the reports.
5.	New engines will be added to the next planned release (version 1.30) in the near future as a FREE update! The exact engines included and have not been finalized. Keep checking WebPosition for new updates to receive these enhancements.

Fixes in this version:

1.	Many rare dialing and connection issues have been corrected to make both the dial up and dedicated connections to the Internet more stable and reliable. Past versions worked fine on all but a small percentage of installations. Support for proxy passwords is expected in version 1.30 as a free enhancement (expected in August or early September).
2.	Revised Lycos to correct recent accuracy issues.
3.	Bug with scheduling large batches of missions has been corrected where the missionlist.txt files were sometimes overwriting each other causing problems.

4.	Prominence was being calculated incorrectly for the body text area in Page Critic. This has been corrected.
5.	Many obscure or minor problems have been corrected.

June 10th, 1999 Version 1.10.6

Fixes in this version:

1.	Traffic Analyzer will now remove the traffic counting code from a page consistently.
2.	A bug was fixed where hitting the select text button on Reporter's URL tab would cause an error
3.	Engine links have been added to the trend report to be consistent with all the other reports.
4.	A bug was fixed in Page Critic where if the word "Description" appeared in the content area of either meta keywords or meta description tags, it would not find one or both of the tags.

June 7th, 1999 Version 1.10.5

Enhancements:

1. Upload Manager now has a checkbox to remove bulletin text from your reports before uploading. Normally these bulletins will report temporary problems with a search engine, so you'd want these to remain in your reports. However, if you do want them removed before displaying reports to your clients, you can do so with this check box.

Fixes in this version:

1.	Errors that occurred in Hotbot and Lycos in the Reporter have now been fixed. These were caused by recent changes made by those engines for which we had to compensate.
2.	Errors that occurred in the Page Critic when running the Hebrew version of Windows are now fixed.
3.	Problems with the Critic downloading the Top XX pages on Excite are now fixed.
4.	The Page Critic suggestions for the number of words to use in the body text and the page as a whole are now more accurate.

5.	Out of memory errors when opening pages larger than about 64K in the Page Editor have been fixed.

Note: LinkStar has reliability problems on their server that causes timeout errors to occur fairly often. This can significantly slow the average time it takes to complete your Reporter missions. We recommend you exclude LinkStar from the engines you run the Reporter against until they improve their reliability. If they don't ever improve their reliability, we're strongly considering removing them from the list and replacing them with a better engine.

May 21, 1999 Version 1.10.4

Enhancements:

1.	Several minor usability enhancements have been made to make the program easier to use. The Reporter button has been moved so that it's the first button since user feedback indicates that's a more logical place for it.
2.	URL Verification report has been enhanced to include two informational columns: First Date Found and Last Date Found. These relate to the first time the URL was found on the search engine, and the last time it was found. In the past, WebPosition was generally reporting Last Date Found, although it may have been inconsistent. Therefore, if "First Date Found"is unknown after installing this update, it will be filled in automatically with the current "last date found" information. As time goes on, the dates in these two columns will often be different, and they'll become more accurate.

3.	Prior versions of WebPosition were reporting matches for sites such as domain.com even though you may have entered machinename.domain.com and not wanted to get a match on just domain.com. Therefore, with this new version, to get a match for other prefixes for domain.com, you should list those in the domain box for the mission. Exception: All domains will be searched for with and without the "www."prefix by default since most people want to see matches whether they include www or not.

Fixes in this version:

1.	Excite changed its format recently causing WebPosition to report that you had no positions found even though your site may be showing up. This version corrects that.
2.	Lycos changed its format recently causing problems with WebPosition reporting inaccurate position numbers in the Reporter. This version fixes most of the problem, but as of May 21st, only the first two pages (20 matches) of a Lycos search are accurate in the Reporter module. After that, the results may not match exactly with what Lycos normally returns to users in the United States. We're working on a complete solution to this problem and will post a new update when it's ready.

3.	Scheduler has been fixed so that the system does not run out of memory opening ten or more missions on a single scheduled run.
4.	Other minor problems corrected.
