2	b	bit	1	0	1	Single basic unit of information that can take on one of two values, such as true and false or 0 and 1. A bit is said to be 'set' if its value is true or 1, and 'reset' or 'clear' if its value is false or 0. To toggle or 'invert' a bit is to change it, either from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0.
2	B	byte 8b	8	0	1	/bi:t/ n. A unit of computer memory or data equal to the amount used to represent one character. The term was coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956 during the early design phase for the IBM Stretch computer; originally it was described as 1 to 6 bits (typical I/O equipment of the period used 6-bit chunks of information). The move to an 8-bit byte happened in late 1956, and this size was later adopted and promulgated as a standard by the System/360. The word was coined by mutating the word 'bite' so it would not be accidentally misspelled as bit. Syn. octet.
2	chawmp	chawmp 16b	16	0	1	[University of Florida] 16 bits on a 32-bit machine (half of a machine word). This term was used by FORTH hackers during the late 1970s/early 1980s; it is said to have been archaic then, and may now be obsolete. It was coined in revolt against the promiscuous use of 'word' for anything between 16 and 32 bits; 'word' has an additional special meaning for FORTH hacks that made the overloading intolerable.
2	chawmp	chawmp 18b	18	0	1	n. [University of Florida] 18 bits on a 36-bit machine (half of a machine word).
2	crumb	crumb 2b	2	0	1	Two binary digits. Syn. quad, quarter, tayste, tydbit
2	deckle	deckle 10b	10	0	1	/dek'l/ [from dec- and nybble; the original spelling seems to have been 'decle'] Two nickles; 10 bits. Reported among developers for Mattel's GI 1600 (the Intellivision games processor), a chip with 16-bit-wide RAM but 10-bit-wide ROM.
2	double word	double word 64b	64	0	1	double word on a 32-bit machine; word is the natural data size of a computer, depending on the CPU.
2	dynner	dynner 32b	32	0	1	dynner
2	gawble	gawble 32b	32	0	1	/gaw'bl/ n. [University of Florida] (spelled 'gawble' or possibly 'gawbul') was in use as a term for 32 or 48 bits (presumably a full machine word).
2	gawble	gawble 48b	48	0	1	/gaw'bl/ n. [University of Florida] (spelled 'gawble' or possibly 'gawbul') was in use as a term for 32 or 48 bits (presumably a full machine word).
2	half-word	half-word 16b	16	0	1	half-word on a 32-bit machine; word is the natural data size of a computer, depending on the CPU.
2	half-word	half-word 18b	18	0	1	half-word on a 36-bit machine; word is the natural data size of a computer, depending on the CPU.
2	longword	longword 32b	32	0	1	longword (on a 16-bit machine)
2	nickle	nickle 5b	5	0	1	/ni'kl/ [from 'nickel', common name for the U.S. 5-cent coin] A nybble + 1; 5 bits. Reported among developers for Mattel's GI 1600 (the Intellivision games processor), a chip with 16-bit-wide RAM but 10-bit-wide ROM.
2	nybble	nybble 4b	4	0	1	/nib'l/ (alt. 'nibble') [from v. 'nibble' by analogy with 'bite' => 'byte'] Four bits; one hex digit; a half-byte.
2	playte	playte 16b	16	0	1	playte
2	quad	quad 2b	2	0	1	n. Two binary digits. Syn. crumb, quarter, tayste, tydbit
2	quarter	quarter 2b	2	0	1	Two binary digits. This in turn comes from the 'pieces of eight' famed in pirate movies. Syn. crumb, quad, tayste, tydbit
2	tayste	tayste 2b	2	0	1	/tayst/ Two binary digits; also as taste. Syn. crumb, quad, quarter, tydbit
2	tydbit	tydbit 2b	2	0	1	n. Two binary digits. Syn. crumb, quad, quarter, tayste

27	C	Celsius	1	273.15	1	The Celsius temperature scale is still sometimes referred to as the 'centigrade' scale. Centigrade means 'consisting of or divided into 100 degrees' the Celsius scale, devised by Swedish Astronomer Andres Celsius (1701-1744) for scientific purposes, has 100 degrees between the freezing point of 0 degrees and boiling point of 100 degrees of pure water at sea level and standard air pressure (1 atmosphere = 29.92 inches of mercury). The term Celsius was adopted in 1948 by an international conference on weights and measures. This is the most widely used scale in the world.
27	F	Fahrenheit	5/9	2298.35/9	1	On the Fahrenheit scale, used primarily in the United States, the freezing point of water is 32 degrees and the boiling point is 212 degrees while measured at standard pressure. Zero degrees Fahrenheit was the coldest temperature that the German born scientist Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit could create with a mixture of ice and ordinary salt. He is credited with the invention of the mercury thermometer and introduced it and his scale in 1714 in Holland, where he lived most of his life. His thermometer was based on the original design papers by Galileo for a temperature and pressure measuring device.
27	K	Kelvin	1	0	1	The kelvin, unit of thermodynamic temperature, is the fraction 1/273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water. The Kelvin scale (or absolute scale) was invented by William Thomson, also know as Lord Kelvin, a British scientist who made important discoveries about heat in the 1800's. Scientists have determined that the coldest it can get, in theory, is minus 273.15 degrees Celsius. This temperature has never actually been reached, though scientists have come close. The value, minus 273.15 C, is called absolute zero. At this temperature scientists believe that molecular motion would stop. You can't get any colder than that. The Kelvin scale uses this number as zero.
27	Re	Raumure	5/4	273.15	1	The Ramur scale (now obsolete) was created by R. A. F. de Ramur (1683-1757) a French scientist. He knew nothing of Fahrenheit's work and did not use mercury, but did produce a good working thermometer. He used the freezing point of water as his zero mark, and put the boiling point at 80 degrees. This scale was widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in France, in scientific communities. He has a greater claim to fame for much of the other scientific work he did.
27	Rr	Rankine	5/9	0	1	The Rankine scale was created by W. J. M. Rankine (1820-1872), a Scottish engineer. This scale was merely the Kelvin scale using the Fahrenheit degree instead of the Celsius. It has also had some wide use in scientific communities but is of no practical use in other areas of measurement.
