glint.exe Windows NT/2000/XP Computer Activity Monitor
  Version 1.04

Glint.exe reveals system activity by changing indicators brightness
according to the values of corresponding system performance counters.
Recent values can be also shown as graphs. It also displays the most active
processes in system in descending CPU activity order.
The names of displayed counters are shown in tool tips or in settings dialog.
The program does not require an installation.

NOTE: In Windows NT 4.0 the counters selection page in Settings dialog
may not work properly on some systems.

	                Controls

Mouse commands:
------------------
Left Mouse Button is used to drag program window around the screen.
Left Button Double Click toggles normal/mini-bar view mode.
Shift-F10 or Mouse Right Click shows the program commands menu.

Keyboard commands:
------------------
'M' or Double Click - toggle normal/mini-bar view mode.
  'G' - toggle normal/large panel.
'A' - toggle showing of recent counter values graphs.

  Down - make indicators darker.
'R' - reset the speed and brightness to default values.

'I' - toggle display of tool tips on mouse hovering presenting counter title
and the last average value per second.

System tray icon mouse commands
-------------------------------
- Left Click - temporarily switch mini-bar to normal view.
- Double Click - exit the program.
- Right Click - shows program menu.

Indicators tool tips format
---------------------------
For normal glinting indicators view mode each tool tip has the format:
'Category-name: Counter-name (Instance-name) = value'

For graphs view mode tool tips have the format:
'Category-name: Counter-name (Instance-name) = value {graph-min , graph-max}'

Where	'graph-min' and 'graph-max' show the minimum and maximum
values displayed by the corresponding graph (the program automatically
adjusts the scale of each graph to show it more precisely).

'Instance-name' represents specific object of a given category in system
that counter refers to, i.e. device, process, system queue etc.
By default 'Instance-name' equals '_Total', i.e. the sum of values
for all objects of a given category.

                 Program Options

-------------------------------
   General Settings dialog
-------------------------------

'Indicators update interval (msec)'
    Range: [150,2000], default is 250.
The main time interval for getting counter values and
    updating indicators brightness.
This parameter can be also changed with Left and Right arrows keys.

'Processes update interval (msec)'
    Range: [500, 5000], default is 1000.
The time interval for showing the most active processes in system.

'Values update interval (msec)'
    Range: [500, 5000], default is 1200.
The time interval for calculating the average counter value per second.
The average value per second is shown inside indicator, if 'Show values' mode is on.
This interval is also used to update recent values graphs.

'Indicators in row'
    Range: [3, 25], default is 5.
Has an effect only in normal view mode, i.e. not in mini-bar mode.

'Brightness coefficient'
    Range: [0.25 , 4.0], default is 1.0
The coefficient multiplies with each calculated indicator brightness.
The bigger is the coefficient, the brighter are indicators.
This parameter can be also changed with Up and Down arrows keys.

'Full set view' mode can be used to define a subset of indicators and quickly
toggle between full/short view by 'F' key.
This mode allows to switch temporarily off costly or unnecessary counters.
'Full View' mode has some performance penalty in default schema on Windows 2000 system.

'Show Tool Tips' mode toggles display of tool tips with a counter name and the last
average value per second.

   Schemas:
   --------
Schemas are used to store the whole program set of options and indicators.
'Load' command restores the previously stored settings with the selected schema name in
the stored schemas list.
'Save As' command stores the current settings by any user defined name.
There are several predefined schemas, which are generated automatically during the first
run of the program.
'Restore Default Schemas' button reinitializes the predefined schemas, if they have
been changed by the user. The operation does not affect other schemas saved by the user.

-------------------------------
   Counters selection dialog
-------------------------------

'Available Counters' tree control shows all counters currently available in the system
and allows to select and add them to displayed counters list.

'Selected Counters' list shows counters selected for indication.
This list does not show instances of the counters.

User can Add or Remove counters from the 'Selected Counters' list.

   NOTE:
When counter is first added to the selected list, its instance name is empty.
If a counter have instances in the system (e.g. Disk or Process groups) and instance
name parameter is empty, then during its start the program searches for the '_Total'
instance name in the system. If it does not exist, then the first instance will be used.

-------------------------------
   Indicator Options dialog
-------------------------------
This dialog describes in detail how to display each counter.

'Counters' list shows all counters used for indication with their instance names. You
should first select specific counter from this list to see/change its options.
A counter title has following format:
       Object-name: Counter-name
   or
       Object-name: Counter-name (Instance-name)
The counters listed in the order they are shown in the program panel.
The display order of indicators can be changed with 'Move Up' and 'Move Down' buttons.

'Available instances' list provides a currently active instances in system for the
selected counter. You can create a new copy of counter with any selected instance name.
'Set Instance' button - sets/changes the instance of the selected counter.
'Add Instance' button - adds a copy of the counter with selected instance name.
'Remove' button - remove the selected counter.
After all instances of a counter are removed, you should add it 'Counters selection'
dialog before using it again.

    Indicator Properties
    --------------------

'Color' - defines an indicator color for its maximum brightness.

'Initial max value' - sets initial value, that will be used to calculate the current
counter brightness. If real maximum exceeds that value, then the new, larger value will
be used for the current run.

'Label' - up to 6 characters string, that will be shown above the indicator.

'Visible'. If this checkbox is off, then indicator is not shown by the program. This
option can be used to preserve indicator settings for the future possible use.

'Full mode only'. If this checkbox is on, the indicator is displayed only in full show
mode. Check this button, if you don't want counter to be seen in short view mode.

'Visible in mini-bar'. If this checkbox is off, then indicator is displayed only in
normal display mode. Check this button to show it also in mini-bar mode.

'Use average value (maximum ignored)'. If this checkbox is on, the brightness of the
indicator is calculated only by its mean value, ignoring the absolute maximum. This
option is useful when counter value has a few high peaks, but most often its values are
not far from the mean.

'Show local variations'. If this checkbox is on, the mean and maximum values for the
counter are periodically cleaned up to follow current trends. This option is useful for
the counters with only periodical activity (e.g. network activity counters) or if a
counter mean value has some global trends.
