Before Installing SourceWatch

SourceWatch must be installed either on the computer hosting your SourceSafe
database, or on a computer with a permanent drive mapped to the VSS database.
There are two steps you must do prior to installing SourceWatch. Please
follow the below instructions.

Step 1: Enable SourceSafe Journaling

Before installing SourceWatch, you must enable journaling. This can be done
from the SourceSafe Admin. Start the SourceSafe Admin, and from the Tools
menu, click Options, then select Log All Actions In Journal File from the
General tab. Click Browse to select the directory and file name in which
your journal is to be written. As a general convention, it is a good
practice to locate journal files in their own directory (e.g. C:\VSS\journal)
- but it is not necessary to using SourceWatch. For additional details on
journals, please refer to the SourceSafe documentation.

Step 2: Download & Install Microsoft .Net Framework

SourceWatch requires that the target machine be running the Microsoft .Net
Framework. If you are unsure whether or not your system is running .Net,
just go to the Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs. If the
Microsoft .Net Framework is installed, you will see it in your list of
programs. If you need to install it, follow the below link to download
the latest version of the .Net Framework:

Step 3: Install SourceWatch

Since SourceWatch will install a Windows service that we automatically be
run on startup, you should be logged in as a user who is a member of the
Administrator group.

To install, double-click on Source Watch install (SourceWatch.msi). The
install wizard will allow you to specify the default directory and whether
to install it for all users or just the current user. You can optionally
accept the defaults.

To complete the install, click on Start, Program Files, SourceWatch, and
select Source Watch Help. Go to the section titled Completing the
Install.
