ShutdownService 2.0.1 - Frequently asked questions

Q: I have updated from ShutdownService 2.0. Can I
save my old settings and use them in Version 2.0.1?
A: Yes. Make a backup copy of the file "sdtse.sdt" in
the ShutdownService 2.0 program folder. Copy it to
the 2.0.1 program folder while the graphical user
interface is not running. Restart the service if
   necessary.

Q: I have uninstalled ShutdownService 2.0, but
"SDT Service 2.0" is still displayed in the
   Service Control Manager.
A: The service has not been removed before unin-
stalling as mentioned in the online help.
Start the MSDOS Command window. Change to the
   installation directory of ShutdownService 2.0.
   Enter "SDTServ20.exe /R". If SDTServ20.exe is
still in the folder, this command should remove
the service from the Service Control Manager.
Otherwise you'll have to install ShutdownService
2.0 again, uninstall the service from the graphical
user interface, and uninstall ShutdownService 2.0
   again.

Q: Why can't ShutdownService power off the computer
   after a shutdown?
A: ShutdownService is using the only secure method of
an unattended reboot or shutdown for Windows NT and
2000. All other methods will let the system in an
unusable state if the workstation is locked, no user
is logged on or the screensaver is active. The method
ShutdownService is using is a function of the under-
lying operating system. Power off is not supported
with this function by Windows NT/2000/XP at the moment
   (and probably never will).

Q: Will ShutdownService support a power-off feature
   in the future?
A: As explained above - I am sorry, but I am afraid the
   answer is no.

Q: I hear a beep every second. Why is that?
A: The trial period is over. This can be because
21 days are over since the first launch or maybe
a second installation has been done.

Q: Where is all the information stored?
A: All information (shutdown programs and software
registration) is stored in the file sdtse.sdt.

Q: When will sdtse.sdt be saved by the graphical user
   interface?
A: 1. When you start the service from the GUI
   2. When you close the graphical user interface.

Q: When does the service read the information?
A: When it starts. Therefore you have to restart
the service to let changed settings take effect.

Q: What does "forced mode" really mean?
A: This means that the programs running on the desktop
will not get a message. They will just be terminated
and will have no chance to react or save any data.
Use this mode only in special situations if you have
no other choice! Use it at your own risk!

Q: Every time I reboot, I see the following error in the
event log viewer: Event ID 5001
A: This is a reboot/shutdown problem with the drivers of some
ethernet cards and has nothing to do with ShutdownService
   itself.
