                        APT Client Controller
                            README.TXT

This version of APT APT Client Controller system is a fully functional 60 day evaluation copy of two programs (a "master" and a "client") that work together to allow you to control access to computers used by many different people. This is especially useful to control public access computers such as those in libraries, schools, and Internet cafes.

There is a single "master" or "server" computer running the master software controlling as many clients as desired. All computers must be running some version of 32 bit Windows (i.e. Windows 95 or later) and connected to the same Local Area Network (LAN). However, no other facilities, such as drives or printers, need be shared. All of the computers must have the TCP/IP protocol installed (note - this is normally installed by default on any Windows system since it is used to connect to the Internet). The Master program does NOT have to be installed on a network server, only on a computer on the same network as the clients you wish to control.

The Master computer controls access to the clients by generating passwords for specific clients that can then be entered by a user at that client to gain access to it. These are not Windows logon passwords, but only passwords that allow access "through" the APT Client program running on that machine. When started, the APT Client program opens a window that covers the entire screen of the client computer. The password that is generated by the Master is required to get past this screen to gain access to the desktop. The Master program only controls access to those computers on the network that have the Client program started. Conversely, access to a client computer is only possible with the password generated by the Master, or with the "maintenance" password which allows access to a maintenance menu for the Client. When installed the default for the maintenance password in the APT Client program is "123456".

When a Client program starts for the first time, you must enter the network name of the Master that will be controlling access to this Client. This name appears on the main screen of the Master program after it is started.

For additional information about other program functions, including logging and user information, please see the program documentation. Program documentation may be found in the "Documentation" subdirectory of the installation directory. The user's manual is in PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. If this is not already on your system you may download a free version from the Adobe web site (www.adobe.com).

The files in this package may be freely copied and distributed as long as all files (including all README.TXT files) are distributed together. Note, however, that this program is an evaluation version of a commercial program and has been copyrighted. If you find this program useful and continue using it, you must purchase it either from our Web site or by completing the REGISTER.TXT form and sending it to APT Computer Solutions, Inc. at the address on the form. More information about purchasing is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
