  DeskMate 3.0 or Higher Data File Recovery Program

The DBREPAIR.PDM file enables the user to recover data in a majority
of the cases from Internal Database Errors, DB_REC_NUM Errors, and
other errors which occur due to damage to the data. This recovery
program can salvage data only from DeskMate versions 3.0 or higher.
The DeskMate and Home Organizer files which the DBREPAIR.PDM file
can access are as follows--

   PERSONAL.ADR--ADDRESS data file

   PERSONAL.CAL or PERSONAL.CLN--CALENDAR data file

   *.FIL--FILER data file, where * is any file name given by the
          user

   *.COL--COLLECTIONS data file, where * is any file name given by
          the user

   *.DRY--DIARY data file, where * is any file name given by the
          user

   HOME.DB--HOME INVENTORY and ITEMIZED LIST data file

   TRAVEL.DB--TRAVEL PLANNER data file

   INFOCNTR.DB--INFORMATION CENTER data file

   KITCHEN.DB--COOKBOOK, GROCERY LIST, and MEAL PLANNER data file

   ACCOUNTS.DB--ACCOUNT INFORMATION, CHECKBOOK REGISTER,
                CHECKBOOK BALANCER, and EXPENSE ITEMIZER data file

   NOTEBOOK.DB--FINANCIAL NOTEBOOK data file

The last nine of the above-mentioned files are Home Organizer files.


This disk contains the following files--

   DBREPAIR.PDM
   README.TXT


In order to obtain a printout of this README.TXT file, insert this
disk in Drive A, make sure your printer is switched on, is on line,
and at the C:\> prompt, type in the following command--

   PRINT A:README.TXT

and press <Enter>.


INSTALLATION

1.  Start up your computer.

2.  Insert this diskette in Drive A.

3.  At the C:\> prompt, type in

       CD \DESKMATE

    and press <Enter>.

NOTE: In the above CD command, DESKMATE is the name of the DeskMate
      directory on your system. If the name of the DeskMate
      directory is not DESKMATE, substitute the appropriate name in
      the place of DESKMATE in this CD command line.

4.  Type in
       COPY A:DBREPAIR.PDM

    and press <Enter>. This command copies the recovery program to
    the DeskMate directory on your hard drive.

5.  Startup DeskMate at the C:\> prompt by typing in--

       DESK

    and pressing <Enter>. If you have a computer which has
    the DeskMate program on ROM, press <F12> to access
    DeskMate.

6.  At the Desktop, press the <Tab> key until the cursor is moved to
    the PROGRAMS List box.

7.  Press the <D> key until DBREPAIR.PDM is highlighted and press
    <Enter>.

8.  Press <F2>.

9.  Press the <R> key to highlight the Repair Database option and
    press <Enter>. The Open File dialog box is displayed.

10. Press the <Tab> key, type in the name of the data file you wish
    to recover, and press <Enter>. This starts the recovery program.
    After the recovery is complete, the Database Results dialog box
    is displayed. A message indicating whether the data was
    recovered successfully or not is displayed.

11. Press <Enter>.

12. Press the <Esc> key to return to the Desktop.

13. If the recovery was indicated as successful in the Database
    Results dialog box (in Step 10 above), confirm this fact by
    going into DeskMate and accessing the data file which was run
    through the recovery procedure.

NOTE: There are times when the recovery may salvage only a portion of
      the data or none at all.  The extent to which the recovery is
      successful depends upon the severity of the damage to the data
      file. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain a backup copy
      of your data file.
