Description: Q&A Write cardfile of Internet country suffixes (found on
many emails), & instructions on how to print it, as well
as many other cardfiles & 'Address' & 'Filer' databases,
             compressed into multiple columns.

Required: Tandy Deskmate 3.x, and Symantec Deskmate Q&A Write.
(Cntrycod.crd is also readable by other versions of Q&A).

Files in this package: Readme.txt (this file), Cntrycod.crd,
                       Cntrycod.txt

When reading email and usenet, I often see email addresses (and a few
other URL's, as well) with an internet country suffix, i.e.
'someone@anywhere.net.nl'. The last 2 characters ('nl', in this
case), represent the sender's country. I wanted a way to immediately
look up the suffix, so I would know what country the sender (or URL)
is from. Someone sent me a long text file listing all the country
codes, giving me the idea to import it into a database so I could add
new records when necessary, and sort/print it any way I wanted to.
After printing it, I could hang it above my desk for quick reference
when browsing usenet and email. So, I decided to import it into a Q&A
Write cardfile. The cardfile, cntrycod.crd, is included in this
package.

The only way to print a cardfile in Deskmate Q&A Write, is to
define a merge document, and then merge it with the cardfile. The Q&A
Write manual tells how to do this. I wanted to do something a little
different, though, namely, to print all the records from the cardfile
in multiple columns, in condensed print on paper. That way,
hopefully, I could compress all the records onto one page. I have
done this with other files, including Deskmate 'Address' & 'Filer'
databases (after importing to cardfiles). The way this is done is to,
instead of creating a merge document, create a 'label' format instead.
Then, you can define the label format as anything from 1 to 8 labels
across. You can define the label height as little as 1 line high.
That way, when you print the cardfile, it can print multiple records
on each line, 1 line at a time, on plain paper (instead of actual
labels), and looks just like any other report. The difference is that
you cannot define headers or footers, and some other special
formatting instructions.

Unfortunately, Deskmate Q&A Write stores all label formats that came
originally with the package, along with any new ones you create, in
one file, QWD.LBL. Therefore, instead of including *that* file with
this package, I'll lay out the steps to create the label format. As
implied above, this technique can be used to print condensed,
multi-column reports of most other cardfiles, as well as Deskmate
'Address' and 'Filer' databases.

1) After entering Q&A Write, pick the 'Card File' pulldown (F7).
2) Pick 'Mailing Labels'.
3) Tab to the 'Label name', and input 'Internet countries by suffix'.
4) Press Enter.
5) You should now be returned to Q&A with an empty label, 38
characters wide by 6 tall. You need to change it to work with the
cardfile.
6) Pick 'Page Setup' from the 'File' menu.
7) On the 'Define Label' screen, change the 'Width' to 34, Height to
1, all other margins to 0, CPI to 17, and press Enter.
8) When you are back at the empty label again, you need to input the
merge fields. Input '*Suffix* *Country*' without the apostrophes.
9) Now, you're ready to print. Pick the 'Print...' option from the
'File' menu.
10) On the 'Mailing Label Print Options' screen, fill in the fields,
from top to bottom: 0, Printer, Continuous, 4-Across, 0, 66, 0, 0,
cntrycod.crd.
11) Press Enter.
12) The card file will now be displayed. Press Alt-S, if necessary to
sort it, and then Enter, and the report should print on your printer.
It should look like the included file 'cntrycod.txt'.
13) After pressing Escape (to exit Labels, and return to Q&A Write),
be sure to answer 'Yes' to the question of whether you want to save
the new label format.

Cntrycod.crd is already set up to sort by suffix. It is also already
pre-sorted. Be aware, though, that if you add new countries, you will
always have to re-sort it (Alt-S) before printing.

If you would rather sort by country, rather than suffix, consult the
manual for instructions. In the latter case, you might want to define
a new label format with the merge fields reversed.

Experiment with your own print formats, and have fun!
