Yeah, but see, I can use my RamDisk for storage of all of the other goodies I
want to use -- besides boot and copy of the files to RAM and then the SYSTEM
(SYSTEM=2) command takes forever unless you are running Duane Saylor's public
domain "goodie" to block load the whole shooting match. I have that for both
LDOS and TRSDOS and it certainly enhances the load time. Matter of fact, I
liked it so well, I wrote my own to block load the ram disk under CP/M -- much
faster.

I would have used Duane's goody, but unfortunately, my megabyte is one I was
given free by Ross Wiant of RAI. It is NOT compatible with the Alpha Tech
megabyte, as it has no input port, and as such, the Roy Soltoff patches don't
work. So I have to load the RAMDrive the slow way. And because of that, I
generally just leave the whole thing going all the time, and only reboot when
something glitches (about every four hours, seems like). But MOVE6/CMD still
works, at least. Since I never bought the HD driver for CP/M, (diffident about
that, as I'd have to buy the CP/M, first, too), I'm restricted to what I can get
online with four floppies. I really wish someone had marketed one of the
upgrades to CP/M 2.2 (like ZCPR) FOR MM CP/M. A local CP/M guru, Dave Holmes,
tried to install ZCPR in it, and gave it up as a bad deal. Like I said, I can't
wait until I can afford an Amiga. Well, I didn't say it, before, but I
*thought* it.

MM's CP/M is really nice -- unfortunately, it has a most non-standard BIOS as
"Jesse Bob" wrote the whole thing in hand-tailored Z-80 code as opposed to the
more standard 8080 code. Worked real hard to keep the thing on one track of the
floppy disk.

I have both versions of the CP/M -- MM's and Tandy's -- there is really quite a
difference. Tandy's just was never fully completed and is full of little
critters. The nicest part of Tandy's package was the overwhelming bunch of
goodies such as RMAC and DRI's advanced debugger and many other little goodies.

That makes it worth the cost of the entire package.

The story with the Tandy 2000's is that if a store has them they can sell them.
The two drive version is selling out at $155 or thereabouts. They are not an
item the store can order though, so its a hit or a miss. If you are really
interested ask a salesman or the manager of a store to call around at other
shaks for you. I'm sure they'll find one in the area that way if they exist.
Check out the Computer Center's to see if they have any of the option boards
remaining. That will be important in the future as well as monitors.

store we have a 2 Drive T2000 there. This is not the store system though it was
a display model )

You should not be needing the mono command yet. On the back of the computer you
should look for RCA output jacks labled VIDEO and AUDIO. The Video jack is a
pure video signal that a monitor ( ie VCR type Monitor ) can hook up to. The
audio jack is a low level output signal line very similiar to the outputs of a
CD player or a tape deck. The Video output can be used with some of the newer
High Resolution Monitor/TV's on the market. The picture will not be as sharp as
that on the CGA Tandy monitor. ( Pardon me if I assume Color ). Tandy also
sells a little video monitor for $129. Green letters on a black backgroundnot
really good for graphics, great for text. If you have a TV with the afor-
mentioned VIDEO input jacks, that could give you an alternative. If this does
not help the situation, please leave more info and I'll try to help later.

Bob,
As others have mentioned the controller built into the 1000 line was not
designed to work with the 1.2Meg format. Thats something the Tandy 3000HD and
above have built in ( the controller's ability I mean ). But all is not lost.
The controller can work with a 3.5" 720K Floppy Drive. This does offer you and
alternative without having to buy a new controller and occupy another slot. If
you already have 2 Drives then we have a problem. If not, then the 3.5" Drives
are on sale at the Shack's until April 25th for $129.95, you will also need the
installation kit ( its actually a support bracket ) to put the drive in the bay.
Its really easy to do. Hope this helps.

In your search for a controller make certain you tell the people from whom
you buy that the machine is an IBM AT clone. Why, because you want a 16 Bit
controller, not a slower 8 bit controller. There is a speed difference between
the two. Tandy's primary source for 20Meg drives is SEAGATE ST225's this would
be a logical choice to look for. Good luck in the hunt.

There is a power supply problem that I am told exists with the 1400LT. The
external connector can not supply enough power for an external 5.25" drive. You
would therefore have to use an external supply. If you are comfortable with
doing this type of a job have your local Radio Shack order the Service manual
for the 1400LT . This will give the the proper diagrams comming out of the
external drive port.
Keep the Ramdisk driver in the config.sys file. When the 1400LT boots MS
DOS it loads the 128K Ram Disk into the extra 128K memory space that it comes
with. This is actually AT Extended memory. You could also use this memory as a
CACHE resevoir to speed up the dual floppies. If you get to a point where you
are unshure get the phone number of either the nearest Tandy Computer Repair
Center or Tandy Customer Support lines for the portable computers. If you get
the Service center ask to speak to one of the Technitions about adding a drive
to the laptop 1400Lt. Take it from there and good luck.

RE: TANDY 3000HD HARD DRIVE (Re: Msg 12277)
     From: TFGEARY To: HAVCO

The problem you may possibly run into is the capacity of the power supply. Its
sounds as if you are close. The 3000HD can physically support the drive and
does have the capability of using it. If you do it yourself you should remove
the EMS board just to be sure. IF you have it installed, then its there
problem. If you shop around you may notice that the difference in price between
30Meg and 40Meg is really not that much. Also beware to RLL 30Meg Drives. The
controller for the 3000HD is a MFM controller and you can't just use one on the
other. If you do mail order make sure it will work with an MFM controller. You
may want to look a SEAGATE drive's. Tandy use's them very frequently ( primary
supplier for the 20Meg drives ). Yours is probably a ST225. Good luck

The character you see is symptomatic of telephone line noise. It may or may
not be your modems fault. Since the phone lines were designed for human voice
quality that was ( is ) actually lower quality than what a modem needs (wants).
Possible soloutions are:
    1) Upgrade to a 2400 Baud modem ( Better filtering ) most of the good 2400's
have adaptive equalization to allow for poor line quality.
    2) Try another phone jack, it could be poor wiring in the house and you are
experiancing inductinve pickup from nearby AC wiring.
    3) Try it in a friends computer.

I have avoided Personal Deskmate and stuck with Deskmate. Now using Deskmate
II on a 2000 both at work and at home. At work, it prints on an Epson and at
home on an Okidata. I have had no problems.

Perhaps there is a problem that someone else can help with, but I'd tend to
think you need to play with your printer's DIP switches.

I'd also take a look at the printer settings you have selected in Personal
Deskmate. It may well be different on Personal Deskmate, but on Deskmate II,
you use <ALT>-<F6> to examine or change printer settings.

Anyway, you are doing quite well in Forum. Welcome !

The add-on drive for the 1400 LT is strictly an external type. This contains the
housing and power supply for the drive. Tandy has never stated that the add-on
drive would use the LT's power supply, so there really is no problem with the
LT's power supply. It is quite adequate for what it was intended.

If LOST1 were to call Tandy's techs at this time, he would find out little about
adding a drive. They are not yet ready to make the announcement, as the drive is
not commercially avaialable, YET.

You are quite correct in your statement that there is "a way" to hook up almost
any external drive to the LT. It is all in the cable connections. You see, there
are two extra connections to Tandy's port.

2.4.2 works fine, but PCPlus just sits there. I've changed the Initialization
codes several times, trying different ideas to no avail. Also, PCPlus does not
seem to send any codes out to the modem when the program is loaded, as ProComm
does. I can initiate a call from the main (blank) screen.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mike

After you get into PcPlus, send 3 plus keys and then AT &C1 &D2 &W. Pcplus has a
problem seeing the init string. I didn't type the plus' as my modem would have
disconnected. If your modem is external, change the DTR switch and set the CD

When I was playing with menu-4 I found that I needed to switch to several files.
For instance when I leave GT powercomm (where I use Mkey to define keys) I must
clear out those key definitions before I jump to Word Perfect 4.2. But As in you
example I only see a path to an executable file wp.exe. So how would I clear
(rkey) out the key definitions? Also I tried to do MENU DEMO.MNU and I got the
two intro lines and my screen went black. I waited for about 20 or more seconds
and warm booted and tried again. Same thing. I like the menu program thus far--I
am playing with it on a floppy first before I go to a hard disk. Also my floppy
is not a system disk but has command com on it--should I also put Ansi.sys and
config.sys on the floppy--maybe that was the problem?

Hello John! Sorry about the delay to reply. I hope you still remember me because
I don't communicate during the week, only in weekends. We were talking about
QuickC and TurboC. One thing that I must know, is TurboC like TurboBASIC (wich I
know very well) and TurboPascal? fast compilation, no linking, simple to create
a fimal EXEC file. One thing I know with QuickC, as soon as you use an external
function in the external library WXYZ.LIB, compiling is no longer done in memory
but use temporary files on disk. This slows down the compilation (a lot!!!).

However these "temporary" files become permanent. Is TurboC the same or a bit
better?

Turbo BASIC ?!? I've never used it! Turbo Pascal -- fast as hell! Turbo C --
not quite so fast. Quick C -- not so quick at all. Microsoft C 5.0 -- slow!

Microsoft C 5.0 -- good code; Turbo C -- almost as good; Turbo Pascal not quite
as good as TC; Quick C -- yeeech!.

Turbo C is quite a product and well worth the $99 -- it is almost into the
"industrial strength" category for this miniscule price as compared to Microsoft
C V5.0's almost $500 price. You do not have a debugger yet for TC or TP but the
compilers are very good and you can use SYMDEB to symbolically debug the code.

Ronald,
As long as you are not going to use a program you compile on another (non-1000
keyboard) keyboard, those patches are ok. If you ever plan on transporting it
over to another computer, forget it. Over in the big network, where I help man
the Turbo Basic sig for Borland, I stress this for those patches, since the
patch does get carried to the run file. We do have the patch available over
there in our forum in DL9, and the author also has it on Genie.
BTW, What happend to your text with a CTRL-BREAK on the T1k.... I just tried
this (because I was sure I had before) and NOTHING bizzare happened. The text
kept on printing. No problem at all. This was with TB 1.1 . I will try it with
all previous versions to make sure, but I do not have this as a problem in my
book. And I do tons of things in TB each and every day for about 8 hours each
day. And I do it on both a Tandy TX and a IBM AT, so I get the keys mixed up
lots, and I go thru a box of paper each week and do abort printing lots.
BTW... only in that sig is what I say official. Anywhere else, including here,
it is strickly my own opinion and not necessarily Borlands opinion.

Turbo Basics windows, or editor, is almost exactly like TP 4.0's Integrated

.tbc (chain... no run library), or memory... no makes or builds. Otherwise it is
one in the same. I have to remind myself which one I am in because they look

     RE: format (Re: Msg 12473)
     From: JIMREED To: URL

  Earl,

You can upload your messages . . .

. . . to your workspace here on Delphi and then use the command ADD FILENAME
where file name is the name, plus extention, appearing in your workspace.

To make the carriage returns appear exactly where you put them originally,
begin your messages with .LT at the beginning of the first line. That
tells Delphi to do it literally the same way you typed it in.

That is not always a good idea, though, since many people have different
screen widths and forcing a person with a 32-column screen to read your 80-
column message the way you wrote it may make a mess for him. Those 80-column
graphics look totally goofy on, say, a 40-column screen.

Anyway, there are "dot commands" for formatting your messages here.

Want to read about them? (Y/N)

  Here's a hint . . .

. . . for those of you who are writing those long messages. If you think some
folks would just as soon skip the nitty gritty details, you might wish to
embed a More? prompt in your message. It is easy to do.

Let's say I want to give you a chance to exit this message right after this
paragraph without having to read further. All I need to do is when I compose
the message -- or edit it later -- is to put .page on a line all by
itself to produce the More? prompt. Like this:
(Use Y or YES or <enter> to continue)
(Answer N or NO to quit here)

See, that's all there is to it. Since Control-O is so slow in responding, it
would be helpful to use the .page command on longer messages. Be sure
and put the .page right at the beginning and on a line all by itself.
Also, these so-called "dot commands" must not be preceeded by a space.

Now, this is just one of the several "dot formatting" commands you might like
to try using. If you like, I'll give you a list.

By the way, the .page command can be followed on same line with a few
words of helpful text, such as ".page Keep reading?" which would cause
the More? prompt to be replaced with whatever text you placed there, in this
case the words: Keep reading? and it would look like this when seen by
  someone else:

  DOT TEXT FORMATTING COMMANDS
  ----------------------------

   .b n
     will leave n blank lines
   .i n
     indent n spaces
   .p
     denote start of a new
     paragraph
   .br
force next line to start in
     column 1
   .page
     embeds a More? prompt,
     a Y or <enter> let's one continue
a N or No returns you to prompt.
   .lm n
hereon the Left Margin is n
also sets .WM to same value
   .WM n
     sets wrap margin (wrap column)
   .lw n
hereon the Line Wrap is n
   .lt (literal mode)
     hereon text will appear as
     entered (Text Formatting
     turned off)
.el (end literal) turns OFF the
     literal mode
   .!
     comment line, will not show
     during text display
  ------------------------------

These dot commands do not work in Mail, so don't bother messing up your mail
  messages with them.

A few of these commands are listed in the Delphi Handbook.

     From: ATTRON To: RTHOMAS

The restrictions you will have to put up with if you opt for the expansion
boardyou're talking about will be the Half-cards, as even the 10" cards made for
the Tandy's are suppose to be to heavy for the board to support. If you add
extra memeory boards, as in expanded memory, you will have to condsider the
small power supply of the Tandy 1000's.

There are two things you can do, (actually three) either get a new computer that
has more slots, or go with the expansion box (Master/Chassis) offered by MEI
(which runs around $600) and still stay with your Tand y 1000. I opted for the
expansion box, and have had great luck with it. But for the same money, I could
of gone with a new computer.

I haven't even talked to any body who has used one of the internal expansion
devices, but you never know, it just might be the best thing you've ever done.

What I do in this situation is use a macro to start WordPerfect. The MENU
changes to C:\WP to run WP.EXE and the command line parameter I pass to
WordPerfect is "/m-setup" which instructs it to run the macro named SETUP.MAC on
startup. One of the things that SETUP performs is a directory change to where

Walk, do not run, from your Radio Shack Computer Center to the nearest phone and
call Dave Neckodom at Envision Designs (address follows):

Envision Designs
1539 W. Pearl Street
Pasco, WA 99301
(509) 547-1139

Dave makes an excellent hard disk controller and sells either Seagate or Okidata
"bubbles" in 20 and 30 MB sizes for the Tandy 2000. My prices as of 04/27/87
were:

1 Okidata 20MB drive kit$945.00
1 Seagate 20 MB drive kit$975.00
1 Okidata 30 MB drive kit$1085.00
2 Okidata 20 MB drive kit$1365.00
2 Seagate 20 MB drive kit$1425.00
Bare Okidata 20 MB drive $430.00
Bare Seagate 20 MB drive $460.00

kits include all cables and mounting hardware -- drive is pre-formatted.

Ask about FAZE/4 and FORMAT/4 for increasing the speed of your hard disk to that
of an IBM-PC AT in data transfer rate. $35 -- cheap at the price.

     No such user message
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

Sometimes, the ENT command seems not to work right. That may be because of the
"linkage" of certain SIG conferences, among these the Tandy and PC SIGs are
"paired up" as are the CoCo and OS-9 SIGs.

If you ever get a "No such user" message when you do a ENT USERNAME, even though
the WHO command shows the person is there, you may be bewildered.

Want to read why that happens? (Y/N)

First, let's make sure . . .

. . . that you are correctly using the ENT command. At the Sig> prompt, if you
type ENT YOURUSERNAME the system will display your name and the last time you
were on (in this case, the present session).

If you are in Forum or Conference, you must put a slash in front of the command,
so you would type /ENT USERNAME <enter>

Similarly, typing ENT 6809ER would cause system to tell you the last time Steve
Bjork (username 6809ER) was on the system.

There is a peculiarity in that the CoCo and OS-9 SIGs are closely related, yet
separate SIGs. We have linked the conferences in these two SIGs so that people
in one SIG can "see" those who are logged into the other as well. So, when you
do a WHO command, you will see people who are in BOTH the CoCo and OS-9 SIGs at
that moment. This same linking up has been done with the Tandy and PC SIGs.

This is done in order to permit people in one of the paired SIGs to be able to
join a conference group which includes people who are logged in the paired-up
SIG. So, when you do a WHO command in either SIG, you see who is logged into
BOTH SIGs.

That causes an odd situation at times. Let's say you do a WHO command while you
are in the CoCo SIG and among the names listed is OS9FANATIC. You decide to SEND
a message to him or her, you are OK, and if you elect to PAGE OS9FANATIC, you
are OK. He or she will get the message or page.

And, that person can join a group with you, even though you are really in
different SIGs.

BUT, if OS9FANATIC has never, ever been in the CoCo SIG and joined that SIG,
then when you try ENT OS9FANATIC you will get a message: "No such user," even
though you can "see" the person's username right in front of you. By the same
token, if someone in OS9 Online were to do ENT YOURUSERNAME and you had never
joined the OS-9 SIG, that person would get a "No such user" message because the
ENT command checks the ENTRY LOG of that one, individual SIG only.

If you go into the OS9 Online SIG and type ENT USERNAME you may see that person
was last on the night before, yet if you go into another SIG, you may find he
has not been there in months, or even get a "No such user" if he or she has not
joined that particular SIG.

The only time this causes confusion is in the linked SIGs. CoCo and OS9 SIGs are
linked, and so are Tandy and PC SIGs.

Hope this helps.

Tandy announces 5000 MC, PS/2 compatible
     From: EDITORS To: ALL

By LONNIE FALK PCM Editor and Publisher

NEW YORK CITY --Tandy Corporation introduced a new computer today, the 5000 MC,
an 80386-based MS-DOS machine compatible with IBM's Micro Channel Architecture
that will run the OS/2 operating system.

Tandy also announced a number of options for the new 5000, including ultra-high
density hard disk drives, VGA on the motherboard and all running at 20 MHz. The
system, chairman John Roach said, will not violate any copyrights or licenses of
other computer manufacturers "that we are aware of." The implication was that
Tandy and IBM had agreed on licensing fees for the Tandy product.

The 5000 will retail for $4999 in its base configuration with a version with an
84 megabyte hard drive available for $6999. Numerous other configurations will
be available -- including those with hard drives with capacities up to 344
megabytes.

Tandy also announced it has invented a new read and write Compact Disc
technology. The technology, called THOR, will allow CDs to be recorded in the
home or office.

The THOR technology -- which may be available commercially in as little as 18
months -- has vast implications in the computer, audio and video fields. THOR
is technically compatible with present CD formats, meaning it can -- once
available -- be played in present Compact Disc players. (Other WORM systems
require a special player to read their discs.)

Roach said he expects sales from the new technology to increase Tandy profits by
"hundreds of millions" of dollars.

Insofar as computers are concerned, Roach said the read/write speeds from the
new media should be at least as fast as from present floppy or hard disks.

Right now the only thing really left is how to put in the co-processor and how
the external drive port is configured.

seems durable.

Better touch base with John Roach on that one. After yesterday's announcement
you would expect the first check in about a year. THOR, WARM... hey, it's just
a case of semantics! I'm really fired up about the 5000. I've in the process
of specifying a newtworked PC-based system for the office. We will translate
our ICOBOL applications for the DG Nova and Eclipse mini's to some PC-based
language (probably dBase IV) so our users will have more hardware options
available to them. I was leaning toward the PC's Limited System 300 as the
server, but the 5000 MC may be what I will get. I'll know as soon as I see the
Disk access times for those new conventional high-capacity Tandy drives for the
5000. The PC's Limited 150 Megabyte ESDI has an 18 ms spec. If the 5000 goes
out the door for $6500 with an 84-Meg drive, that will put the price close to
the PC's Ltd. machine (with more memory and less disk). But the clincher may be
that the 5000's 386 runs at 20 mHz, while the System 300's runs at 16 mHz.
Since our users operate in an INTENSIVE multi-user environment, spped is an
important criterion! --- Jay

Actually, there is no similiarity between the two compilers other than a visual
presentation. While QuickBasic 4.0 works with threaded lists and is an
interperter, Quick C is a half-baked compiler with shreds of a debugger in it --
neither is very good.

On the other hand, Turbo C Version 1.5 is just about as professional as you can
get without spending $500. MENU V4.0 is a good example -- I distribute the
final product that has been compiled with Turbo C but I use Microsoft C Version
5 and CodeView to debug it. The output code from TC is smaller and seems to
behave better albeit it does not have zation routines in it like MSC V5.0.
QuickC on the other hand, will not even compile the program within the
environment. You have to generate a QLB (what?? -- an additional QC library
for my screen manager and window manager) and then use QCL to compile them (the
command line version) because I am linking two programs with a library to
produce one executable. You GET FAKED OUT because QC runs QCL for you -- Takes
almost as long to compile as with MSC V5.0 so why use it!!!! Why use two
crippled products when you can use the real McCoys and have the full power at
your fingertips.

Yep, sure does -- it automatically positions you to the first error detected
during a compile and then you use the F7 and F8 keys to jump back and forth
among the errors. Very nice error messages and you can control the various
levels of warnings and compatibility messages displayed.

  Joel,

  Let me add a bit of a correction . . .

. . . about PCM magazine. While I believe it to be an excellent magazine for
Tandy 1000 owners, it is not, as you put it: "solely for the Tandy 1000
series." It covers all Tandy MS-DOS machines and even has articles in every
  issue for the Tandy portables.

I would agree that it is a good magazine for 1000 owners, but it is not ONLY
  for them.

Although I am not really clear on what it is you are trying to do. It may help
if you invoke the COM or EXE file through a BAT file. This way, the BAT file
will be active when the COM or EXE file terminates and should send you "back to
where you came from" - your Basic Menu.

Why is it necessary that you use Screen Mode 6?

I hate to contradict you but PCM is not strictly for the Tandy 1000 series of
computers. Actually, PCM stands for Portable Computer Magazine. It came out
long before the Tandy 1000. It's first years were devoted to the model 100's
only. As you can see, it has grown to support all Tandy MS-DOS machines and
most of what is printed, if not all, will work on most IBM clones.

  John,

  Just to pick a small nit . . .

. . . PCM did begin as "PCM -- The Portable Computing Magazine" and on the
11th issue changed the name to "PCM - The Magazine for Professional Computing
Management" and then on the 21st issue became "PCM - The Personal Computing
Magazine for Tandy Users" and on the 24th issue became "PCM - The Personal
Computing Magazine for Tandy Computer Users," and then on the 29th issue
became "PCM - The Personal Computer Magazine for Tandy Computer Users."

The last time I looked (knock on wood), it still had the latter title.

Yes, we did have reasons for all those changes.

Who knows what the morrow shall bring! <grin>

Suffice to say that we like to simply call it PCM.

I can't figure that out as this is the 640 X 200 X 4 color mode requiring the
32K of memory as does the SCREEN mode 5 - 320 X 200 X 16. If he is trying to
SHELL out to DOS -- here's a thought -- even though BASIC reserves this 32K
block of memory, DOS has previously used it for COMMAND.COM's high memory
portion and COMMAND.COM has a tendency to remember that address.

He did not state what DOS version or BASIC version he is using? Would be
interesting to know. Also, he does not state whether he is attempting to shell
out of BASIC while still in Mode 6 -- makes a difference if this area is not
protected like in Don Phillip Gibson's articles (PCM, March - April, 1988).

PCM and its relation to the Tandy product line. PCM supports Tandy's full MS-

support for the Tandy Model 2000 computer.

Ah Haa! I have it -- the real bug is that BASIC lets him SHELL out in mode 6

return an "Internal Error" message and immediately abort the command. He used

Right you are! Now, he says that he can get out (SHELL) but then he has a
problem. I think he can invoke the called program but then he gets hung and has
to reboot. The memory clear is blowing away part of COMMAND.COM? COMMAND.COM is
blowing away part of the cleared memory? The latter, I would wager.

If he resets cleared memory and redisplays his screen immediately after reentry
- he may be able to "fudge" it. Off hand, I can't think of another way.

Here are a couple a things you might try:

SHELL to a BAT file from your Menu program, first "re-loading" COMMAND.COM
and then the program you want to run.

If the above scrambles your cleared graphics memory, you may have to just
recall the screen displayed before the DOS call.

It appears that you are using Tymnet, from your description of the line of
garbage characters. Usually this is caused by coming on to Tymnet at 8 bit
instead of 7 bit - also type an uppercase A.

If you have a Telenet local access number, I suggest that you switch. You can
find where your closest access number is by calling (800) 336-0437. If you find
that this is a local call or no more expensive a toll call than Tymnet -SWITCH.
